The Crown, Little Missenden

As a walker who has now gratefully paused in this pub on a number of occasions for a breather and a pint or two, I heartily endorse the favourable comments here. It is a fine pub even by the generally high standards of the Chilterns. The range of ales is exemplary and the landlord is outstanding in his professionalism and welcoming attitude. In short, it is a rare gem. The only blemish is that after midday the music-free peace and quiet tends to be shattered by the arrival of foghorn-voiced golfers recounting their puny exploits on the greens.

Shoulder of Mutton, Wendover

I regret to confirm that Chef & Brewer have turned what could have been a fine old pub into bland chain outlet.
It 's OK for a pint if you're killing time before the next train at the nearby station, but this is not one for the discriminating pubgoer.

The Standard Inn, Rye

Maybe I was unlucky, but my experience was completely at odds with the many favourable reviews.
After entering, I was left standing without service, even though the only other customers were three young men of little more than the legal drinking age. The similarly callow barman was too engrossed in sharing some private joke with them to respond to the arrival of a paying customer.
The delay enabled me to register the jungle rhythms thumping from the loudspeakers, the preponderance of lagers over real ales and the general absence of the ambience one would expect to find in an old pub in one of Rye's celebrated cobbled streets.
So I went out without ordering and went down the hill to The Ship Inn, where the pleasant barmaid promptly pulled me a splendid pint of Harveys.
I would advise discriminating visitors to the Standard to take a few seconds to size up the place before committing themselves to an order.
