The Pilot Inn, North Greenwich

I haven't been to this pub for a couple of years. One good thing is, the quality of the beer has stayed the same. I had a very pleasant pint of Seafarer's ale.
I used to enjoy the cosy and comfortable feel in this pub. Unfortunately the refurb has completely taken the charm away. Very much a generic "brand identity" look. It's not unpleasant but it is soulless.
As with too many pubs the focus seems to be on food. There is a large restaurant area downstairs that was completely empty, as there is less seating than there used to be, we had to sit in here. I can't help thinking a pub should focus mainly on drink with good quality pub food as an added bonus.
Another strange idea was the drinks menu. Surely that's what the bar is for? I would also question, considering the area the pub is in, selling a bottle of Port for £65.
What a shame the brewery couldn't keep the good stuff about this pub while subtly updating it.
Two years ago I would've given this pub at least 9/10, now, it would be 6/10

Hop Poles, Brighton

Great little pub. Came down to Brighton to enjoy the sun with my girlfriend. Fancied a pint and a bite to eat. Very nice pint of Brains Le Peleton. The pulled pork sandwich I had was pukka. Nice small courtyard out the back. Decent music playing. Really can't speak highly enough of this pub.

The Clarence, Whitehall

This pub was a big disappointment. Looks good inside and out but the ale was bland, the atmosphere was non-existent and the thing I dislike most in pubs, reserved tables. The menu looked ok. One last thing, the music was bloody awful.

The Castle Inn, St Ives

This is a cracking pub. Always use it when we're in St. Ives. Haven't been for down for a couple of years but went for New Year and it hasn't changed. Good range of ales that are very well kept. It's always a pleasant place to pass the time.

The Red Lion, Leytonstone

I started drinking here early last year. A distinct improvement on Zulus. The beer quality and selection was top notch. The menu was varied and the food pricey but very good. The atmosphere was always relaxed and I've had a fair few pleasant Saturday afternoon's listening to reggae and blues while drinking my way down the bar.
In the last few months though I've found the quality of beer has gone down. Everything tastes the same and not overly pleasant. A big problem on a Saturday evening is most of the tables being reserved for diners, particularly when tables are empty.
A pub should be primarily for drinking and informal eating.
