The Ship, Gillingham

Now open again, under new management. The new owners are planning to refurbish the kitchen and open a carvery in the new year, apparently. The animals and geese from the garden have now gone.

The Ship, Gillingham

Closed for business on Friday 31st October 2008. I hope somebody will take it over and make a go of it, but these are tough times for back street pubs.

The Northumberland Arms, Fitzrovia

Nice place to stop for a pint after the mayhem of Oxford Street, particularly if you're not feeling 'hip' enough to go for a drink in Soho.

Gets packed quickly on Fridays after 6pm, but then it's not exactly huge. Hardly a cosy local but perfectly alright.

The Catcher in the Rye, Finchley

Agreed, best pub in Finchley. I don't agree that the food is overly expensive though, my steak burger with blues and salad, coleslaw and fries was 6.95 which I thought was fine. Must admit I've not tried anything else yet.

This pub has a lot of little separate nooks and crannies to sit in, with very cosy sofas in the low-lit area to the side of the main bar.

Agree, the staff and landlady are always pleasant.

Bread and Roses, Clapham

Was in here last night, comfy and laid-back sort of place. There was nothing wrong with the beer I had, and the potato wedges were nice as well. Staff were also pleasant enough. I stayed on for the comedy club/ DJ thing upstairs, which was definitely worth it - the audience were a bit 'Clapham' if you know what I mean, but the comics weren't letting them get away with it!

Much less pretentious or 'hip' than most Clapham pubs and bars try to be.
