The Royal Oak, Aubourn

How rare in the UK to find a pub that opens to suit customers, not the owners, and serves country inn fare at a reasonable price. This is not rocket science but you could be forgiven for thinking it is, judging by the number of moribund pubs around.A refreshing change and I never need any persuading to go here,

The Full Moon Inn, Morton

Quite pleasant but low ceiling makes for noise. Frequented by country hooray Henrys. Food OK but nothing special.

The Wheatsheaf Inn, Newark

Pleasant location, good service but food overpriced. My main course gnocchi was starter size portion. Sliver of pudding disguised as desert. If I want overblown prices I will go to a poncey Islington pub, not a country inn. Better pubs, with better food, in the area.

The Red Lion Inn, Newark

Indescribably awful. Not bad from outside but interior like an inner city ghetto pub. We we misled by the subtle ambiguity of the sign outside "FOOD". "We don't do it" said the landlady. The irony of the sign was lost on her. "I've only been here 4 weeks". Clearly not long enough to mount the major engineering operation needed for removal or simple alteration of a pub sign. Hopelessly pathetic.

The Waggon and Horses, Halam

Pub in total darkness and doors closed when we arrived at 6.20 pm. We went after a favourable review in local paper. We will not return. When will those in the hospitality business in the UK learn to open and serve food and drink at times to suit customers, not themselves ?
