The Mash Tun, Brighton

I like this place - its rough round the edges and that's part of the charm. The staff are always friendly and the breakfasts are a treat. It can get busy quickly, so if you like a bit of space then best to go during the day on a weekend.

The Great Eastern, Brighton

Lovely atmosphere and cosy environment. Tried here for birthday drinks with work colleagues after reading reviews and had a most enjoyable evening. The blokes mentioned how nice the dark beer was.

Santa Fe, Brighton

A personal favourite and visit when I'm in the mood for a treat. The food is fantastic from the grill, the bar menu is standard bar grub. My most favourite things about this place are the staff and the cocktails. I like my cocktails and you will get some of the best available in Brighton from Santa Fe. The bar staff really know their stuff too. If you're looking for something not on the cocktail menu, just ask. If you like the more lavish spirits, they will recommend and serve up in style.

The Cow, Brighton

Try_harder comment made me laugh, cos it rang bells. Yep, nice place but totally agree about the staff. They're friendly enough but could do with being on the receiving end of their own service - especially on a morning after the night before. I'm afraid I don't like the extent of smokiness, and considering this is a kid-friendly place it's surprising (to me anyway). There's one set of couches (the rest is tables and chairs), right by the window and in v.high demand - get there early if you like to be comfy. Food's pretty good and standard price for gastro stuff.

The Shakespeare's Head, Brighton

I'm a big fan. The sausage and mash is the best I've come across in Brighton: perhaps 7-8 different sausages both meat and veggie, as many different mash selections and nearly as many gravy options. Even pud. Small and cosy, friendly staff, and the back room is great for the slightly more intermit evenings. Smoking can disrupt the pleasurable atmosphere, but that will be a thing of the past nationwide from summer 2007 anyway. Love the selection of board games. The badger ale is definitely a selected taste, made from hand picked organic nettles. Definitely recommend a visit, week nights are slightly less busy and equally enjoyable.
