The Hatton Arms, Hatton

Great setting by the canal with a massive garden. Good choice of local ales, including one brewed specially for the pub. Good choice of vegetarian food, freshly cooked. Recommended

The Kings Arms, Solihull

This pub is located a mile and a half south of Knowle where the A4141 crosses the Grand Union canal. BITA's website has it right, but the pubs own site is wrong, which meant we had an unexpectedly long walk to get there! Three beers on handpump including Tiger & Black Sheep. The Guest Ale, Greene King Fireside was superb. Food good too, with a good range of vegetarian choices.

The Red Lion, Knowle

Only half the 6 handpumps in use & not an inspired choice of ales. Eventually chose Old Hookey & was served 2 pints of Abbott! Beer fans would be best advised moving swiftly on top The Vaults (see Nick Worrall)

Nick Worral, Knowle

A real gem . 6 real ales on draft & it just had a beer festival. Several local ales & all in good condition. Well frequented by locals. The pub is actually called The Vaults (Nick Worrall is the landlord!) and the location is about 50 yards off the High St in a small side street

The City Tavern, Birmingham

A real gem - a real victorian building with 6 real ales & friendly staff & customers. Strongly recommended

The Greyhound, Wigginton

We walked there from Wendover on Sunday 11 Oct 2009 and arrived hungry & thirsty. There were 3 ales on tap including Hobgoblin, which was in good condition. The Sunday menu was limited - mainly roasts, but it did include a good freshly cooked vegetarian option. The pub had an award for second best in Dacorum (the borough) and from our visit this was well deserved. Only gripe was that the food took a long time to arrive, though they did give us a free drink to compensate!

The Raglan Arms, Weston Super Mare

Only 2 out of 4 handpumps in use this evening & VERY quiet - our party of 3 increased numbers by 50%! Bar staff not v friendly & beer quality suspect

Off The Rails, Weston Super Mare

Good beer, 3 real ales including one from the local RCH brewery. Great location to meet at the start of our holiday. Food menu v limited sandwiches only. Both locals & bar staff slightly wiered

The Major from Glengarry, Weston Super Mare

Got as far as the front door on the strength of previous BITE reviews, but deterred by the loud jukebox & did not enter

The Captains Cabin, Weston Super Mare

Great views from the dining area across the bay. Good real ale. Food was decent, though there is an extensive menu & its a bit off pitch outside the tourist season

The Glass House, St Albans

Formerly The Acorn, a Benskins pub & subsequently Clannard - this pub has no real ale. It was closed this evening & according to Pints of View, its gone bust. Need I say more

The Slug and Lettuce, St Albans

This pub was previously "Casa" & before that a community arts shop. Its main claim to fame is that it is (or was) owned by Simon Bridbury, who succeded me in the property management department at Savills in 1984. I have walked past it twice a day every day since it opened, but knowing it didnt sell real ale, never been in. I fought my way in past the 2 bouncers to ensure todays pub crawl was complete, expecting to make a swift exit on being told they had no real ale. But HOLD THE FRONT PAGE!!! three handpumps were clearly visible on the bar, though none of them were diaplaying a pump clip. The bar staff explained - REAL ALE arrives next week, though no details of the beers are yet available. Further research required

O'Neills, St Albans

This pub struggles to match up to its previous existence as the Philanthropist & Firkin, complete with on-site brewery. Sadly the real ale offering is now reduced to Fullers London Pride, with the other pump clip empty. On the plus side this was available at a bargain 2.55, but it was not in good condition. Nowadays the only reason to visit this pub is to see Sky Sports on TV. Today was showing highlights of the England v Australia ODI - the "irish" barmaid turned it off mid-program - I left.

The Robin Hood, St Albans

The Robin Hood has always suffered from being a mock-tudor pub located within a short distance of the genuine article! Alyhough the architecture scores are low, the beer quality has been consistently good. Today a pint of Hobgoblin - pricy at 3.20 - was in good nick & Black Sheep & Timothy Taylors Landlord (neither particularly common locally) were both available. It is now offering live music on Saturdays

The White Swan, St Albans

My second visit to this pub this evening - its local nick name is the Dirty Duck. I'm a keen pub goer & I have walked past it twice every weekday for the last 15 years. This probably gives an indication how attractive it looks, though it is undoubtedly a very old pub. Bombadier (3.20 per pint) was by far the most expensive beer offered this evening, tho it was in good condition. Unfortunately there is little in the way of original internal features inside, though there are a few interesting photos on the walls & the football quotes are amusing, Colemanballs style. It remains an underwhelming experience

The Horn, St Albans

This pub is (and has for some years been) named The Horn. Its Real Ale history is chequered, but this evening it served a decent pint of Brakspears Bitter (2.80). This is an unusual beer to get in St Albans & it is named after the family of the only english pope (also from St Albans). The pub now serves an upmarket pie menu (Pieminster). But its main claim to fame remains its music - headlining tribute bands but also including a good proportion of local bands & DJ's - no mean achievement in this town. Sop worth recording that The Publican magazine voted it national music pub of the year 2008.

Mokoko, St Albans

My first visit to Mokoko since it changed from The Harrow. Unfortunately no real ale on sale. Waited 7 mins at the bar, but couldnt get served. The new management is clearly doing something right for the place to be so crowded. But it seems to have nothing to offer to the local beer drinker

The Verulam Arms, St Albans

The pub sign displays a Latin moto which loosely translates as "mediocracy is OK". Despite this service was good and the food was well above the usual pub standard with Stuffed Peppers a big hit as the veggie option. Three well kept real ales on draft included Batemans Rosy Nosey, a seasonal favourite.
