Don't feel too comfortable about settling in here.....landlord Chesney has been givedn his marching orders. His Irish alcoholic lunatic boss is looking after the place.......she'll have it shut down in a few months.

Well.......as stated in my last post I could stomach paying 3.20 for a pint......that is now 3.40 which even with the recent economy problems is still too high. Especially when the welcome sometimes isn't all that.....but the landlord and missus are fine though.

I think this is the only pub in Basingstoke that still closes during the daytime. Mon to Thurs it opens 11 - 1430 and then 1730 - close. There was an experiment with all day opening some time ago but this did not continue. I have heard a whisper that the daytime opening will cease on Tues to Thurs, meaning doors open at 1730 every night. We shall see.......

I don't think it's that bad! When I go there it is during the daytime where I have a quiet drink with two regulars I know. I've never had problems there and the new people I have met have been quite welcoming.....

Had the 'Crofts Creamy Chicken Curry' yesterday.....it was actually really nice. I didn't mind paying the 5.50 for it (no pound sign sadly, American keyboard!) as it was filling and a I got a generous portion of chips with it too..........Daddies tomato sauce available, very nice too! The other week I had the steak and ale pie, which is in a bowl with a pastry lid, but was still really nice with chips and a side salad. Jim is a real whizz in the kitchen, looking at the comment about the Guinness I would agree, it is a nice pint so I don't mind paying 3.20 for it.......some traditional bitters on too. Was a good night last night as the pool teams were playing, the pub gets quite lively.....

Well......started to use the place a while ago and it is good. It is a traditional back street local, which are becoming difficult to find. It has traditional decor and the staff are very friendly. Don't be put off by any rowdiness, it is actually a friendly pub, just people are doing things in the proper way!!! There are deals for certain football matches, and he has two darts teams. Also the Carling is one of the best I have ever tasted, I know the Guv here is very particular about cleaning his pipes. Karaoke on Saturdays and a meat raffle. Lovely stuff......................

Very impressed on my latest visit, had a really good lunchtime drink with a few old boys and enjoyed a lovely pint of Porter at 5.5% Had a very interesting ride home on the train! Beer and company as excellent as ever.

Ales going from strength to strength, a recent one had (I can't remember the exact name of it) the words 'Port Stout' in it and was one of the best I've ever tasted. Absolutely lovely. Also the usual HSB and Golden Best on lovely form too. 'Leg Before Whippet' and 'Doom Bar' were also excellent beers recently. Cheers!!!!!!!!

Chequers, Walthamstow

If you're a fan of the Doner, Walthamstow is the place for you! I've never seen so many burger/kebab shops so near each other! Nice pint by the way.
