The Hand At Llanarmon, Llanarmon Dyffryn Ceiriog

Save up and treat yourself. Everything about this place is quality. Bit restricted on the ales but at least it has a couple. Menu and food is good resteraunt standard. If you don't know the area then there is the added treat of a jaw-droppingly beautiful trip up the Ceriog valley. Book a meal in the bar - a week in advance - this place won't disappoint.

The Falcon, Chester

A meal and a drink in the upstairs room at lunchtime is the best deal in town. Rock solid Sam Smiths quality at unbelievably low prices. Hubby says Humphrey Smith should be running the country. Nice building pleasant staff. Why go anywhere else?

The Albion Inn, Chester

If a lanlord sees fit to put up these in-your-face proclamations of who he will and won't serve then he sets high standards for himself.
A) Although the menu looked good it was expensive. It may have been excellent but we couldn't afford it because:
B) We had just paid 7.20 for a pint of ale and a gin and tonic.
Suggest he adds the following line to his many notices "Only enter if you're prepared to be ripped-off".
The interior is nice enough if a bit overdone with the WW1 stuff - but 7.20 - for heaven's sake.

The Three Fishes, Shrewsbury

(Hubby says) excellent selection of ales - well kept and often changed. This is a very convenient pub if you're shopping. The trick is to get in early and get a table - it's not a big pub. Printed menu but well presented food (proper chef) at a fair price. A few sparrows in beards at the bar but no baseball caps and swearing. I admired the way they toughed out their no smoking policy before it became law anyway. Interesting history - see print on wall inside. A good pub.

The Three Tuns, Bishops Castle

Been here loads of times. Decent food at reasonable prices - proper chefs work here. Decent people both sides of the bar. Hubby used to say their own ale was "idiosyncratic" and "tasted too new" - now he can't get enough of the XXX. Nicely styled bars. Bishops Castle has a lot of interesting shops for a small town. Altogether a place for pilgrims. Go there.

The Ring O' Bells, Overton

Nice pub (female licencee, so no surprise there). Old building with well preserved features. Lots of rooms - a real warren - interesting and plenty of seating. Lots of good quality prints hanging on walls - more interest. Menu written on blackboard - always a good sign. Food is top qualty home cooking - not chef school stuff but a good meal at a fair price. Hubby says a very decent selection of ales. Good car park. Well worth the trip out of town.
