Compton Inn, Compton Dando

This place is excellent, a real model for how a country pub has to be these days. They do, obviously, depend on food but it's still very much a pub, not a restaurant. There were people from outside the village who'd booked tables for Sunday lunch but lots of regulars there too, and very relaxed atmosphere. We hadn't booked but decided to eat and the food was great. This is a very professional set-up that does everything it has to and does it well.

The Wheatsheaf, Corston

Visited this pub for the first time on Sunday, and was quite impressed. From outside it looks a bit run-down but new owners (since about Christmas, apparently) are doing the place up and doing it nicely too - though it's still very much a 'work in progress'. Sunday lunch looked very impressive (we ate something less substantial, but good) and beers were good (Doom Bar, Butcombe, Greene King IPA). Best of all, it had a nice atmosphere, obviously lots of regulars - many of them there for lunch, but although the food was good this was no gastro-crowd.

The Rising Sun Inn, Launceston

Great food, fantastic real pub atmosphere, excellent wines and a good range of bitters - the Penpont Brewery (local, apparently) beers were the pick of the bunch, with one on draught and a range in bottles. This place is well worth visiting.

The Top House, The Lizard

We stayed nearby and used this pub over a few evenings last week and found it to be excellent. There's a really good atmosphere about the place, with lots of people who were clearly local. Some of the other reviews here suggest that locals have abandoned The Top House but that's clearly true only of some- there are plenty who still use it. The beer and wine were good and the food was very good - the menu looked like 'pub grub' but was cooked to a much higher standard than average.
