The Aleksander, East Twickenham

'Originally a Young's house this corner pub is now a Free House. It has had two changes of name since it was sold by Young's and has now reverted back to its original name (Rising Sun) after the latest refurbishment in January 2018.'

Actually reopens tomorrow Jan 27. No website yet.

The Dukes Head, Richmond

I use this pub most evenings. The beer is well kept - Youngs and Twickenham Naked Lady particularly. The main trade is for meals early evening and it is indeed quiet thereafter, mainly old codgers like me. So it is a good place to meet to talk, except on Friday nights = Open Mic aka Noise Night, which attracts a young crowd who like that sort of thing.

If you get a duff pint don’t just grumble - tell the bar staff

The Victoria Inn, Richmond

Recommended. Open til 1200am on Fridays {like the Dukes Head round the corner in the Vineyard} unlike the pubs down in the town.

The Earl of Clarendon, Kenilworth

We were served some very vinegary Marstons last Friday, which we didn't drink.

The Aleksander, East Twickenham

This was the Rising Sun and then the Marble Hill. I attended the opening party & was favourably impressed but haven't been back since as I drink in Richmond. It is now free house serving home made pizza cooked in a wood fired oven and aiming at the local very numerous young families.

It's a good stop on a pub crawl between Richmond riverside and Twickenham riverside. The next pub along, the Crown, is closed for a rebuild.

The Chequers, St James's

Late last night we found this quiet and pleasant pub, handily situated halfway between Green Park tube and Piccadilly, so a good final stop for a west-end pub crawl. The Deuchars had just gone off but the Pride was good.

The Marble Hill, St Margarets

'October 2: Re-naming and re-launch party at the Aleksander pub: they'll be showcasing their new kitchen, complete with wood-fired pizza oven and a genuine Neapolitan chef, Francesco. And there will be food and drink samples to try for free. And as if that wasn't enough, they have a great range of craft beers, so you can enjoy your very own comparative tasting; from 16:00 to 23:00. Contact: Roger Davy, the new landlord.'

Not tried at time of writing.

The Marble Hill, St Margarets

TThe Richmond times reports today (Sep 07 p. 25) that the pub is to be renamed the Aleksander (for their 2-year old son) by the new owners, Roger and Magdalena Davy. It will be relaunched as a free house and family pub serving pizza and pasta on October 2. A children's playground is promised.

The Bell, East Molesey

A pleasant and unpretentious local, serving Black Sheep and Courage bitters and standard pub grub. TV screens but no canned music when I was there. The large garden includes 2 play areas for the kids.

A good place to set out from to walk along the Mole.

The Old Anchor, Twickenham

The present tenant has a lease until 2014 so it may be that it is OK for the present.

The Crown, St Margarets

Closed for refurbishment until September.

The Dukes Head, Richmond

This pub continues to thrive: it has a very lively 'open mic' music night on Fridays - which is not over until the now rather fat but once very beautiful Polish lady with the still fine voice sings sad songs . .

To find it, walk up Richmond Hill whichever way you can and ask for the Vineyard, which runs round the hill on a contour about 1/3 way up, not up and down. Il vaut le detour.

The Coach Makers, Marylebone

This used to be The Conduit of Tybourne and has been reviewed since it reopened under that name.

The Windmill, Mayfair

A high quality Young's house with an excellent [but often quiet] pie house restaurant upstairs, which I use frequently. Highly recommended.

The Masons Arms, Marylebone

The sign outside says that it is being converted into a [no doubt upmarket] fish restaurant.

The Marble Hill, St Margarets

This pub has been renamed The Marble Hill. The old website is defunct and there is no sign of a new one yet; there is a menu outside. I have taken lunch there once and can report that it is definitely a gastropub [i.e. cooked meals cooked to order] and doesnt do pub grub. The naff decor created by Youngs refurbishment only a year ago remains unchanged.

The Marble Hill, St Margarets

This pub has reopened as the Rising Sun/Marble Hill, a food led pub under new management which is open all day offering freshly cooked food, great ales/beers and specially selected wines. The new tenant is Jamie McCarthy of Marble Hill [UK] Ltd, which is said to be backed by Chinese restauranteurs. I have a report of a friendly welcome the other day but have not yet been in myself. The website has not yet been updated. The pub has lost its entertainments licence so it is no longer a music venue.

Marble Hill is a very fine park opposite the pub stretching down to the Thames, so the Rising Sun, the White Swan and the Barmy Arms offer a congenial pub crawl from Richmond Bridge to Twickenham Riverside on a summers evening. There are loads of buses to get back to Richmond at the finish.

The Marble Hill, St Margarets

The pub is shut most of the time now. The word on the street is that the current landlord will leave in June. It may become a gastropub. We must wait and see.

The Dukes Head, Richmond

The Dukes has been refurbished this summer without harming its idiosyncratic character. The dart board has gone; there are now 3 plasma screens [in the lower bar only] for sports watching [including the hurling final on Sunday last]. The food menu is more ambitious and more expensive; last food orders 10 pm. It is open all day, serving breakfast, fancy coffee, etc.. Currently several attractive bar maids [but they come and go].

My local: beer [Youngs, Price, Bombardier/Guest [currently Twickenham Ale]] consistently well kept; staff cheerful, hardworking and efficient; landlord & lady Irish: Pat & Mairead are convivial; haven't tried the food, which varies as chefs come and go; all ages up to 92 [he's been waiting for a drink since 1936 . . ]; not usually crowded except on match nights & rugby weekends, so a good place for a meet; closed in the afternoons, I think; open til 2330 Sun - Thur [doors close @ 000 hrs prompt]; much improved by the smoking ban. To find it, ask for The Vineyard: it's in the middle. Or go to the bus station and follow your nose uphill from there.

The Harcourt Arms, Marylebone

Apparently unchanged in 40 years except for the Big Screen, which is left on but silent, so it is not intrusive. Good beer [Adnams]; cheerful & efficient service; all ages; food not tried; no muzak.

The Masons Arms, Marylebone

Quiet [no live music on Wednesday], good beer [Ferret, August - October only], cheerful & attentive staff make this pub well 'vaut le detour' for West End drinkers who don't habitually venture N of Oxford St. The menu shows that it only aspires to entry level in the food stakes, but if that discourages those whose main interest is food rather than drink, so much the better, as there is not a lot of room inside.
