Not a bad place to start the evening on City Road, but the locals will eye you up as if they can't believe non locals dare to enter their pub!
Never much of an atmosphere when I've been in there.

Brilliant views over Cardiff and all the way to England. It's just a shame they don't make more of the place than they do. It's now your run of the mill Brains pub, the food is ok. Nothing special. Just a shame you get some loud customers who thinking nothing of swearing at the top of their voices in what is a family place.
Service can leave something to be desired at times. Personally I think it's better for a drink on one of the benches outside on a summer's evening, than a place to eat.

I use this pub as my local. Nice atmosphere (great at Christmas!), good food, good selection of beers.
Like someone else has said, it always has sporting events on TV. It even opens in the morning for early morning rugby games, they even provided free bacon butties last time I was there.

I would urge people to ignore the review from December 2006. Maybe that person was expecting a five star restaurant, I'm not sure.
I adore this pub. Everything about it is wonderful, the location, the staff, the food! Especially the food. Yes, when it's busy you may have to wait for your table but it really is worth the wait.
Yes, local people use it as their local. But believe me, you don't have to wait for the locals to be served before you! The food certainly isn't overpriced sh*t. Perhaps if you go to a place that has an assortment of wonderful food but you chose a curry, well, what does that tell you.
I cannot recommend this place enough, but having said that, I've not told my friends about it. It's my secret place!

The Varsity, Cardiff
Full of chavs or girls in tiny dresses. Takes an age to get served at the bar. Not the best place for a drink.
