Appears to be a chain pub and as such has a corporate rather than an individual personality. Beer and service were OK but food a bit iffy. On the positive side the portions were generous and what we got tasted fine but it seems that when busy the chef loses it. For example my fish and chips arrived without some of the advertised items and my wife's veg was virtually raw. There are better pubs within yards. REVERENDBAZ - 21 Apr 2011 09:06
Bafflingly rude service here last night. Things didn't start well when one of us got asked for ID, despite obviously being in their mid-30s. Come drinking up time (at 12?), the bar manager starting physically grabbing drinks out of people's hands (I kid you not) and spilling wine over people as a result. Someone next to us had a full pint they'd just bought taken away, cos they "wouldn't be able to drink it in the next two minutes" (though clearly that didn't stop the bar staff from serving it). To be fair, the rest of the staff were friendly & efficient, it all came down to the bar manager who seemed like she was just trying to be as rude and confrontational as she possible could. Never going back here. partha - 21 May 2010 21:02
This place used to be packed out with people drinking and dancing at the weekends now its sold its soul for the tourist dollar its a totally unremarkable pub . It does have a nice beergarden out the back though for those festival nights ,but much better places to go even in the grassmarket beersteer - 20 Jan 2010 18:21

The beehives food is prepacked, everything down to the mash has been cooked and put in a bag and then cooked in one of the three microwaves. The prices are ridiculous, even a bowl of chips costs an arm and a leg. There are a few good members of staff, Jamie and Kerr being the two best. One of the "chefs" (i'd rather call them a microwave technician) would rather sit and play psp than do any sort of work at all. All in all, another spirit group pub, with poor management skills and a lack of quality control. wagon - 5 Dec 2008 02:03
