Although this is only a few hundred yards off a main road it has a real country pub feel. Right next to the Leeds-Liverpool canal this is a traditional looking whitewashed pub. Plenty of outside seating which would be idyllic on a hot Summers day. Inside it is deceptively large. Low ceiling with dark wooden beams. A square bar with several slightly different style rooms all having old style memorabilia. Beer wise there was 3 pumps & all of them were LocAle. Southport Brewery - Sandgounder was available on my visit, & being one of my favourites I was more than pleased. Mrs happytyskie & myself opted for 2 burgers to eat. Superbly served with ample salad & chips we couldn't finish them. I get the impression this is mainly a transient pub due to its location & therefore relies on its food trade. However I think this is definitely a pub that serves good food more than a gastro pub. happytyskie - 13 Mar 2010 19:32
Ok - firstly i was rather excited to find out that the Ship had reopened, used to spend a lot of lovely evenings with husband/children/dogs sat by the canal. Phoned up yesterday to check on food times and was told quite brusquely food finished at 7.45. Made a mad dash there after work and arrived at 7.10 to be told at the bar that food was finished because it was busy!!! Spoke to the new lady!!! owner who agreed to serve us as i had phoned earlier but she was turning away other customers who had read the menu ( stating food till 8 ) and sat having a drink before ordering. Well no food for them, the owner explained to me that 2you have to draw a line somewhere or we'll be here till midnight " Silly me, i thought that was the point, serve people at the times they want to eat and make some money at the same time ?? Oh well at least my family got fed - combo platter to start , bit into the deep fried mushrooms to find they were still frozen solid inside. Main courses menu offered anything you like as long as it heats up in microwave with chips. Ham and eggs were vile, boiled ham looked like beef it was dark brown and curled up at edges ( i was sort of expecting gammon i suppose ) jacket potato microwaved very pale quite hard inside, childs sausage looked about 20 years old....... Drinks, well white wine spritzer - i was given half a glass of soda and a small bottle of wine so when the wine was poured in glass was very watery with all the soda. Coke served for children in small wet half pint glasses. Guiness was fine. Hope this review helps if anyone is thinking about a pleasant family night out there ( we may even see you, we were offered a free meal next time in view of the above complaints !!! ) ilovefred - 3 Jul 2009 14:08
After a period of decline and subsequent closure this canalside pub is back and things are looking up. It's out of the way but worth a visit if not only for the leafy canalside beer garden, perfect for a summers day. On the real ale front there's two Southport brewery beers, including the excellent Golden Sands, and Tetley's. The pub specialises in good value no-nonsense pub grub and was busy with diners on my visit. There are two real fires and several drinking areas, although the pub is generally open plan. Great to see it back open and doing well- definitely a pub on the up. Carlurmston - 26 May 2009 17:37
i went for a meal in this pub in July 2008 of last year, i found it quite homely, we sat outside and gazed at the liverpool leeds canal, it was a glorious sunny day, they had a barbeque, so we had a steak sandwich each with a portion of chips, i didnt half get myself drunk though on fosters, we drove past a pub on the way there called The Kings Arms, can anyone tell me what this this is like? kolo - 27 Mar 2009 17:37
