Who does this "twat" tonto (or was it Tonyjo) think he is!! He obviously talks through a different part of his anatomy to normal human beings. So what's wrong with a good "locals" local - far better than your soul-less "High Street nafferism's" such as Wetherspoons. Maybe the decor could do with a touch up, but it's not long since that it was re-painted and the carpet IS carpet, not tarmac (unlike some other pubs). I've never yet seen a fight in there, and I've been using the pub for the past 9 years. Yes there are a few "less desirable" people in the Alex, like there are in any other pub (and there are some really rough pubs in South & East London!!) but the Alex and it's staff are amongst the friendliest and most welcoming you could wish to find.
As for his comments about the karaoke and it's singers (whether they be "regular" or occasional - all of whom are treated fairly) - they are amongst the best in London. Maybe that's why we regularly get 20-30 singers of an evening - people travel from as far away as Lewisham, Sutton, Croydon, Maidstone & Billericay to be there. I DO hope that "Tonto" comes in whilst I'm there because he will get a surprise - that's if he can find somewhere to park his horse! Maybe he'll have to eat his own words - I'm sure we can find some for him!

Have spent rather a lot of time (and money) in pubs from as soon I was old enough to get away with it and it is a fact that you just have to keep on returning to the Alex. Yes you do get strange people and yes it could do with a makeover, but couldn't we all. I didn't realise we went to the pub to view the decor. The landlord cannot be blamed for someone spilling beer on a carpet. The last fight I saw in the Alex was when the Dave the boxer ran it around 10 years ago. My dad who is 78 also drinks in the pub regularly as did my mum until her recent demise. The beer is always in good nick condition and as for the karaoke singers of which I am one, the comments of this chappie Tonto are a load of rubbish. I think he is on a different planet. Why doesnt he come down and announce himself to us all and we can watch him sing. Should be a laugh. Hi Ho Silver Away

This is a very friendly pub and all are welcomed there, im not sure when tonyjo came in but they have totally got it wrong. as for the decor it is very basic and there is nothing wrong with the carpet.

"Tonyjo" is obviously either a jealous rival landlord or a barred customer! The Alex is the friendliest pub I know - with the best karaoke and superb bar staff. Peter and Gina are the warmest landlord and landlady one can imagine. They are also firm with people who get out of hand and that's why it is a safe and welcoming environment to drink in.

It's well worth it!

Sorry penge71, but this is simply the worst pub you can imagine. You really should be put off by the 'slum' exterior decoration which just continues inside. You'll know you're inside as the carpet sticks to your shoes.Youare then 'greeted' by the ugliest and surliest bar staff you are ever likely to meet, and who will totally ignore you over the regulars. Warning, don't try and maintain eye contact with anyone, you'll be on your back in moments - it really is like a pack mentality in there. Also steer well clear of the 'karaoke nights' where (regulars only) will attempt to destroy any song you wish, although it's usually the same old crones who think they're great - just try and slip out while they're on. You won't regret going anywhere other than here!!
