We have been going to this pub for several years. It is the hub of this idilic village. The awards it recieves for the quality of the beer are well deserved. In winter the real open fires are very welcoming and there is a superb beer garden for the summer months.
There is a very picturesque walk from the car park around Brockadale, which is the local nature reserve. It takes around 40 minutes - just enough time to work up a thirst.
It is well attended by the locals who provide an excellent atmosphere.
It is great to see a thriving local pub when so many others are closing down

Pretty much agree with previous comment, scruffy little pub in a strange village. On my visit Black sheep and Guinness were good, the Dark Horse not so good.
Pub seemed to be full of kids running around unattended or climbing all over furniture, the locals seemed to be an odd bunch if you are not in their little clique. I saw potential customers walk out soon after meeting with bar manager. Cold Shoulder just about sums this place up.
Change of ownership / management team required here ?

Typical Yorks two roomed, stone built village drinking pub. There's a central bar and a garden at the rear with a very substantial smoking shelter. Serves Black Sheep Bitter which is usually good @ £2.65. On my most recent visit there was a house-branded guest ale provided by Dark Horse which was poor, possibly due to lack of turnover.
This pub would be a lot better if the management team (mother and daughter?) could bring a little cheerfulness to work with them. I have heard this establishment referred to locally as the "Cold Shoulder."
