We spent an extremely pleasant evening at the Shoe Inn after walking all day in the rain on the South Downs Way. The staff were charming and welcoming and couldn't do enough for us. When I enquired which of the meals were gluten-free the barman was very well-informed, and the chef prepared a gluten-free batter for a delicious fish and chips. This attention to detail is rare in London restaurants and I did not expect to find it in a small village pub on the South Downs. Full marks for everything - my friends food was also top-class. Good wine, good food, a roaring log fire and a friendly welcome - what more could we ask for? julins - 29 Apr 2012 11:14
Seems to be popular for its food, but this is also a very pleasant place to stop for a drink. Good beers and nice loacation next to the river. Floyd - 25 Sep 2011 19:41

We had lunch here on July 27th 2011. Nothing much changed since GazzaTheBeerman was there in 2009. A really fine pub. Indeed the clientel has an average age of 60+ during lunch, but I think the food and beverage prices are fair. This pub is on my favorite list if I am in the area again. havank - 16 Aug 2011 20:11
Good if pricey food, and well kept beer, more restaurant than pub in some ways though and a wealthy clientel will keep it that way I suspect. odbod - 14 Jan 2010 11:29
