Sorry to spoil the fun but on a lunchtime visit I found it near empty, gloomy and uninviting. The only guy serving was sitting front of bar reading the paper and clearly found it an unwelcome chore to have to go behind the bar to pour a pint. That said, the result - the Bear Island lauded below - was excellent and good value at £2.80. Maybe I just hit the wrong time but it will be a while before I give it the benefit of the doubt and try again.

Superb pub, visited recently on a very quiet Friday night. One real ale on, Newby Wyke Bear Island. This pub deserves more support from the folk of Grantham methinks

I had a very quick pint (of Newby Wyke) in here between trains yesterday and it certainly is a real gem, Granthams oldest building I beleive, and the living sign, a real beehive with real bees is still there too, beer was fine, I think there were about 4 on. I would certainly head here next time for a pint. Worth searching out.
