What on earth has gone wrong? 10pm Saturday - six people in, plus us two.
I’ve always thought The Slubbers to be good but over-rated and more so since Taylors lost their way, but this was a depressing experience.
Let’s start with the good – two different pints (not Taylor’s) were excellent quality.
The bad. The place stank of bad drains. It was cold, and I don’t feel the cold. Barmaid was clearly in training and the gaffer was wrong side of the bar, where he stayed even when nine people arrived together. He got off his arse to sweep up a broken glass.
Someone complained, so it took two staff to break some wood up for the fire, which lasted about five minutes.
What a shame. This pub’s in a roughish part of Huddersfield but is full of character and has been a gold mine in the past. Maybe they rely on it being rammed before and after Town games.
Not rated it.

Former Timothy Taylors pub, now independant. The beer range and prices have improved recently and quality is as good as ever. Lovely, traditional corner pub.

A street corner local which is owned by Timothy Taylors of Keighley, so expect the Taylor's range plus one guest beer. A new landlord took up the reins, just before Christmas 2008, and has smartened the place up a little and introduced a lunchtime menu which is proving popular. The Taylors Golden Best is particularly recommended. Some words of caution to first time visitors, though. The pub is close to Huddersfield Town's ground and is rammed with supporters whenever Town are at home, so check the fixture lists. Also, the red light district is nearby, so be careful if walking from town late on an evening. And, finally, the new landlord has significantly upped the prices - expect to pay £2.50+ a pint in an area where £2.20 - £2.30 is standard.
