Arkells pub across the street from the Tall Ships, which I liked better. Had a rather pedestrian Arkells Moonlight. The barmaid was not very welcoming, and the selection seemed to be limited to a few Arkells ales - okay if you need the ticks. Very quiet when I visited in the early afternoon.Did not eat. There are nicer pubs in Gloucester.

We popped in here on a late January Saturday night after turning up at our first choice, The Tall Ship, just as they were locking the doors (approx 10:30pm?)
I can understand previous reviewers' comments, but even though we're a group of middle aged types, we enjoyed our visit.
Take time to look around you and the place has 'character'. Take a look up in the one area and you will see the old roof timbers and beams.
It was quite busy, but we found room for the 4 of us amid a varied crowd of customers. The disco was crammed into the front bar but not too loud further back. The music was surprisingly varied and suited us.
Sadly, not all ales were on, but what we had was perfectly fine (can't recall which Arkell's ale - sorry).
Livelier atmosphere than elsewhere we visited that evening!

The previous posters are too right, sadly. Nowt's changed since. Potential is there with the location near the ever-improving docks area (heck, the shopping area is now 'Gloucester Quays' which shows there is a bob or two around!). Dated interior, friendly enough though. Indifferent beer (3B or Wilts Gold). My 3B was warm but just about ok.

Looks the part from the outside (genuine 1600 whatever refurb it says), inside looks more like some cheap hotel chain's attempt to recreate a 'John Bull for tourists' bar. I was faced with the same choice as the previous poster - Moonlight or 3B and opted for the 3B... was awful, left half of it. This pub promises so much from the outside but disappoints on every level once you go into the place.

An Arkells pub with their own 3B and Moonlight on draught. I opted for the Moonlight which was sadly only useful to put on ur chips so had to return it, barmaid was friendly enough though and swapped for a much better pint of 3B. Pub aint anything that special though, 6/10
