user reviews of the Document House, Newbury

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

I like this place a lot & use it as my local. The prices are on the dear side, I admit, but the service is good and I've always enjoyed the food both the quality & the portions.

The age policy seems to be based on whether the staff know you or not. My daughter (early 20s) has no problems getting in.

Looks ok and the no-smoking is a good idea, they need to keep the doors shut when it's cold though. I was in there midweek and had to enjoy my pint with my coat on. Freezing it was.

Good little intimate bar. definately not a pub. Excellent range of Wines and Champagnes. Food is Excellent and not your standard pub grub. No Smoking rule is defo a bonus. Music is apt for what it is trying to do!

The age policy seems to vary, as does the dress code. Worth a visit, but the food is seriously expensive. The smoking ban is a plus point.

Will be interested to see if it survives or not

This is the latest venture by one of the ex-owners of the 'Venom' nightclub in Thatcham.

Having had enough of underage drinking/fighting/vomiting (and that was just the bouncers) he has moved into Newbury with the idea of having a place for the over 25's.

The theory is that if you charge high prices it keeps the 'riff-raff' out (aooarently) and by having a 'over 25 only' policy you keep out the trouble makers.

Failed on both counts. Beer/Wines bloody expensive, food - (and lets face it...that's where the profit is) alarmingly expensive, small portions and tastes slightly 'off' most of the time. (mayby the microwave needs cleaning)

As for the age barrier?..well three of the guys I went there with are all under 20, so go figure.

They seem to have no idea how to look after, store or serve beer. No idea how to cook, present and serve food - and no idea about who's coming in through the door.

The decor looks tatty already and it's only been open about 2 months. Everyone apparently goes there once (out of curiosity). Most of them never go again.

Staff pleasant, doormen stupid, owner will not be in business this time next year. You just know that this is one of those places that will change it's name/decor on regular basis..and will always be being re-launched.

Better food (famously) in the 'King Charles Tavern' round the corner, better punters in the 'Late Lounge' round the corner, and better atmosphere in the Public Toilets (also round the corner)

Over 25's?....yeah right, if that applies to the I.Q.
