What it says on the tin. A big, rambling Victorian pub with two big rooms now knocked together I guess. Three good, wellkept and served ales on ( at my visit Strongarm, Black Sheep and Hobgoblin) plus all the other usual suspects although nothing very exotic in the lager stakes. Quite quiet when I was there (Friday lunchtime, October) but excellent food menu which was generous in portion size and good value. In the unlikely event you visit the fading Victorian jewel which is Saltburn, I am sure you could do much worse. Rates a 7. Joe_Cundy - 4 Nov 2010 23:52
Nice largish pub in the centre of town recently taken over. Not a bad range of beers Clean and tidy and good service. Handy for railway station Ayresomeangel - 10 Aug 2010 15:50
A very nice pub. Friendly staff and customers. Excellent wooden bar and lighting from a bygone age. Three cask ales - I had the Old Speckled Hen which was spot on. They seem to have bands performing on certain nights.Unlike many awful pubs, this one reminded me of what a good pub should be like! Recommended for a visit, you should not be disappointed. fearlesspunter - 13 Nov 2008 20:50
