user reviews of the Crown, Hartest

Parked outside at 10 on a Saturday morning in keen anticipation of returning from our walk to enjoy a fine pub lunch with log fire, beams and good ale. Regretably, all we got was a motorway cafe with service and food to match. We should have realised when the car park was empty at prime time! No doubt thronged in the summer with less discerning folk prepared to wait for and eat such fayre but what a criminal waste of such a building in such a setting.

Slightly strange pub. Since it's 'revamp' a couple of years ago the interior is very dark and verging on the atmosphere of a nightclub which is incongruous given it's setting in such a picturesque village. It does seem more geared up for food than for lingering over a pint. But worth a trip in summer when you can sit outside and may be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of Terry Waite who can sometimes be seen chained to his fence nearby...

Went recently for lunch. Admittedly it is a Green King pub but they appear to keep their beer well. Huge portions of good food for lunch from the fishfinger sandwich to much grander fare. Quite beautiful as well so would highly recommend it.

We visited the Crown a couple of times in the last week, and both times the food was acceptable if not amazing. One of the staff is sweetness and light, the other appears to have had a sense of humour by-pass. However, the setting is perfect, the village gorgeous and all locals friendly and welcoming. Worth a try.
