I think it's all about expectation- as a past winner of best pub in Oxfordshire and more recently South Oxon, you are likely to be a more critical visitor. Always enjoy our visit to The Bear....

Just ever so slightly disappointed, given how good it's supposed to be. I wonder if its "fame" is strangling it. The food (Sunday lunch) was okay, but nothing spectacular: I know at least one pub serving Sunday lunch at the same price but its food is far better. The beer was good and sensibly-priced. But the whole experience felt a little clinical, a bit too "pile 'em in and get 'em done". It's no longer a country pub really, it seems it's a bit of a "machine" now. I can understand why: it's the price of succes, but is it worth paying that price?

just been voted CAMRA pub of the year for this area, and I can see why- lovely feel to it, and beautiful pint of Brewers Dark last night

A pretty good pub, but there's better options in the wider south Oxfordshire area. North Moreton is a tiny village, so the place is usually full of people that have travelled from Didcot / Wallingford to eat the slightly-above-average grub. There's still room for everyone, but you can't help but think that drinkers come a distant second to diners here.

Mixed feelings about this pub. The staff/owners are really friendly and helpful. The food is a bit bland but generally above average. The surroundings are comfortable and the overall quality of the Bear at Home higher than the great majority of pubs in this immediate area. On all these criteria, a rating of maybe 7 or 8 would be reasonable. However, I've occasionally found the other people using the Bear spoiled my evening e.g. when someone collapsed in a drunken stupor at the bar, and on another occasion when someone thought it was amusing to rip my newspaper out of my hands as I sat minding my own business relaxing with a beer after a long working day. I COULD have been unlucky but after 3 such instances, I'm a bit tentative about recommending this pub wholeheartedly
