| I knew I was going to be in this area today, as my wife had a Mystery Shopping job in the area, so I checked on here to see which was the best pub. The ratings system here is spot on! There was a choice of Bass, Courage Best or Sharps Doombar, as well as the usual fizzy stuff, a choice of ciders including Cheddar Valley, Thatchers traditional and Gold, and either Extra Cold or Standard Guinness, which is what I opted for. A fine menu and specials board, with a wide and reasonably priced selection, including lamb & ginger curry, liver & onions, steak and kidney pie, etc. Food was very popular at lunchtime when I visited, and having had some of it, I can see why. A proper old fashioned estate type pub, which would normally not be my choice of venue, but on this occasion I'm happy to make an exception. I shall return. The_Final_Arbiter - 10 Feb 2010 16:50 |
| Made my first ever visit after the Thornbury carnival the other week. It's obviously very popular. A decent selection of beer included Otter and Doom Bar. The manager/landlord seemed very friendly and we felt at home, even though we'd never been in before. The only downside was that the jukebox music was a bit loud, or perhaps I'm getting old! | Wow I'm in shock, somebody else who has visited the CH! :-) Yes Andy it's still as good as ever as you say, one pub where changes don't happen very often because they are doing pretty much the right thing so no need. | The review from 2007 stands true. The pub remains a good boozer and does welcome in new people from out of the local area. Food is reasonably priced, home cooked and draws in a regular crowd - you may need to book ahead to be sure of a table. Three real aleas are always available and the Doombar is particularly good. | Great community boozer that also welcomes strangers. Landlord John has been mine host for years and is everything a great host should be. Good selection of real ales with usually a Cottage brewery beer as guest + both Thatchers Traditonal & Cheddar Valley ciders on tap too. The reasonably priced home cooked menu that John's wife produces is the best in the area and a seperate dining area from the main bar ensures that either does not impose on each other. Nice garden at the rear too to while away those summer day's. Best pub in the area by a long chalk and has been for many years but still a relative secret compared to some other brassier neigbhouring hostels. Give it a try! MisterX - 20 May 2007 11:37 |
