| It's a lovely old pub full of antique paraphernalia, old typewriters, clocking in machines etc. A shame then that such a snobby atmosphere permeates and the bar staff are neither friendly nor welcoming. For the record, they have Butcombe. Courage Best, Bath Spa, London Pride and Butcombe IPA. The beer was in OK nick. Not terribly exciting and not worth going out of your way for. | Popular community pub on the border of Westbury & Stoke Bishop. Owned by Butcombe, so the usual range of their beer's although the Gold had just sold out and the London Pride appeared to be off as well, so not as good a range as you may expect. Quite busy on a reent Saturday night, although still a few tables as a lot of people seem to congregate round the bar. Also Ashton Press cider on tap which is always very plesant. | Packed on the Friday evening I visited, full of little kiddies with their parents too which I can't say I enjoyed in fact it more resembled a crèche than a pub for me. Beer? Butcombe pub but only 2 of their ales on, the Butcombe bitter (IPA being the other) my part drank being very flat, dull & lifeless indeed .... couldn't wait to get out of the place and the hordes of empty glasses hanging around throughout the pub hardly helped it's appeal either sorry to say. Shame, I'd heard good thing and had not been here for a few years and left highly dismayed. On a positive note though, the Butcombe bitter we then drank at The Post Office Tavern up the road was spot on and much more like it as was the atmosphere there also. MisterX - 11 May 2009 03:52 |
| Hadn't visited this place since 1998, but happily I found it to be in much the same condition - that is to say very worthy - only last weekend. Particularly well-kept ale in the form of Butcombe Gold, good service from - yes, as a male I have to say this - a very eye-catching barmaid. But fortunately the Prince's charms go deeper than the transient appearance of a young staff member. Really quality community local, all enjoying the rugby when I was there. Comfortable and welcoming, this is worth a visit, although not at the complete expense of attending to various other Westbury pubs which are equally in need of inspection. TWG - 26 Jun 2007 16:28 |
