| This pub risks closing like so many other rural boozers. The food is expensive for what it is and not good enough to compete with nearby "destination venues ". The beer is well kept but fully priced. The surroundings suffer from a complete lack of investment and are frankly shoddy. Please make a point of visiting this pub just once and giving the owner or manager your constructive criticism - otherwise it will be too late and this will becomen yet another block of flats. ghostofcaptain - 2 Sep 2007 11:40 |

| After a long walk over the South Downs, stopped in for a much-needed pint. Good beer, but expensive. Quite a bit of choice as to beers. Can't speak for the food (though diners seemed to be enjoying their meals). Seems to have a very good local reputation (Several walkers we met had this as their mid-walk destination.). | I give this pub a very poor rating. After planning a day trip to Seaford and the surrounding area we planned to have a good meal before headidng home to NW London and, after reviewing the website details decided that the Abergavenny Arms had an excellent Al A Carte menu. We made our booking for 6:00pm and turned up at around 5:15pm looking for a pint and a rest before sitting down to our meal (£5.00 for a pint of ale and a coke!!! - that's why pubs are closing at an alarming rate). They had just had a group of cylclists in travelling to Paris but had sufficiently cleared up by 5:45. The only other people were an elderly group of three who appeared to be locals. Anyhoo 6:00pm came and went and we asked where the specials were. They written on a board in permanent marker which indicated to us that they were the ONLY specials they ever had indicating that all items were fresh out of the freezer that morning. The menu failed to impress so at 6:20pm when we still weren't offered to take our seats for dinner we left never to return. Don't be fooled by a lavish webite - the menus are double sided laminates and in reality not very inspired at all. Think again - I am sure there are other pubs serving quality produce for a good price in the area. May the flavour of your food reflect the love in your heart. anonymous - 21 Jun 2007 15:35 |
| The previous comments were not our experience at all. A couple of weeks ago my wife and I were walking the South Downs Way and left the trail to visit this pub and Monks House, the home of Virginia Wolf in the same village. Not a particularly nice walk as you have to go along the road. When we finally arrived on a very warm day we found that the pub was shut. No explanation, nothing. This was before 14:00 hours. To cap it all Monks House was closed too. What a waste of time. Will not go there again. Since the pub was closed without reason, when it should have been open, I have to give a poor score.
