Don't know about a good pint of 80/- ... it's a good beer mug of 1980. And that is generous - I'm having 1962 shouted at me. Truth is it isa good pint, no other options and it is a funny place. Why oh why is there so much space behind that bar? Gotta like it. Boongie - 12 Aug 2008 23:11
Being my first time in Edinburgh drinking properly I sampled this one at the end of the day around 10 pm and was not disappointed. It was my favourite of the session with it's 30s or 40s music, proper beer mugs, old fashioned landlord and a nice photo of the queen behind the bar. ZACKBLONDE - 1 Mar 2007 00:14
Nice place, the kindly expalined to this visiting Londoner was '40' is and gave me a bit in an old school glass mug. As the other enteries say: it's got a great, old fashined pub decor which I do like. Even the formica tables that are bolted to the ground. Enjoyed it alot. MrScott - 6 Nov 2006 14:58
For such a central pub (it's just off the Royal Mile) the Waverley is remarkably peaceful, so it's a great place to meet for a quiet drink. There's not really any choice in the beer, but they'll do you a good pint of 80' in a proper pint mug. There's an upstairs as well, which I've only been in when it's been really busy... Some other random things I like are about it are the thin tables, the plants on the bar, the crocodiles, and the landlord always turning up at the end of the evening (as far as I can tell.) One thing to watch out for is that the opening hours are slightly unusual - for instance, it's closed for a good part of Sunday afternoons. mhl - 12 Sep 2005 20:58
| Visited this facinating pub on a recent trip to Edinburgh. Agree with P. Dickinsons comment about it being like something out of Withnal and I, it was like stepping into a timewarp. With the jazz muisc in the background and the retro decour and the beer served in pint pots it was certainly an experience. Definately worth a visit for the atmos if not the beer.
