Reasonable place to go for a couple of pints to break up a shopping trip, slap bang in the centre. son_of_odin - 23 Dec 2010 10:58
Was here a couple of weeks ago and once again enjoyed the visit. Nothing wrong with the ale and the bar staff were friendly enough. Worth a look in if you've not been before Wheel154 - 7 Sep 2010 14:24
Fantastic traditional pub ideally situated at the very centre of Chester. Looks amazing inside with all its snugs and corners. also it has a great atmosphere and friendly staff. odered food from the lunch menu and was pleasantly surprised by the size of the portions and there was a great choice on the menu. the food was presented well and tasted exellent. Decided to return friday night with friends and was again amazed by this wonderful pub. I A pub that caters for all people and a refreshing change from the rest of the non atmosht was packed with a mixed crowd and total change from the relaxing day time. The music was fantastic with a real party atmoshere. well worth a night out. Would recomend this pub to anyone of all ages. makes a refreshing change from the other bland bars and pubs in the area of chester. kevray1 - 12 Feb 2010 09:39
Had lunch in one of the two seat snugs. It was busy with tourist and ale prices were higher than say the Bull or the Boot. John Smith was good in a clean glass. The meal was tourist typical bland. richardo - 1 Oct 2009 20:06
quote from chestertourist.com : "The Victoria pub is situated on the former site of the HQ for the Roman Legion based in the ancient city of Chester. High cross, the exact centre of the old walled city. The property first became a pub in 1269, and obtained its current name at the turn of the century in honour of the then Queen. Now a listed building, with it's odd shaped doors, low roof, antique oak beams (of which the main beam has been in place for some 726 years and is almost one thousand years old) it has a charm of it's own despite the cellar being positioned over St. Peters Church crypt and the courtyard being a flagged over graveyard. " *** This attractive old pub, dating originally back to 1269, sits on one of watergate rows, by the cross in the centre of town. Outside, it has the characteristic paned windows and black timbered style of many buildings in Chester. there is a small front entrance after climbing the steps up onto the "row". *** inside, there are two front low-ceilinged, beamed rooms surrounding a centrally placed bar. Whilst retaining the old features, the place is smartly decorated. As well as the table and bar seating, there is a set of attractive two-seater alcoves along the wall. Beyond the bar is another small, even more ornately furnished room. Total seating for around 50-60. *** I did not notice any menus, but it was early evening when we called. 3 cask ales were on offer, which included wells bombardier. these were slightly overpriced, at £3/pint. *** verdict : the character of the building has been well preserved, the ale was a little over-priced, not sure about the food. for me, an attractive, interesting pub for a one-time visit. not particularly good value. a 7 from me. reynard - 29 Dec 2008 20:20
