Good pub, would be a great one if the ale was more reliable. As it is you have to take your first pint back to the bar every other visit because it's off. boone - 27 Aug 2010 13:46
We popped in. All I can say is believers in miasmatic theory should definitely avoid this pub. Trinker - 13 Aug 2010 17:48
I agree with other reviewers that the atmosphere here is good, but the beer is awful! On various occasions I've tried all the lagers on offer in the vain hope of spotting a bubble, but no - they're all flat. And expensive. Last night I pointed it out to the landlord, who just poured my pint into another glass and topped it up. But it was still flat! For £3.30! Definitely the worst pint in New Cross. gertie42 - 12 Mar 2010 09:11
good pub with a welcoming atmosphere and being right opposite new cross gate station have missed a few trains because of the excellent beer. a mixed clintele when i've been there witha few pre match millwall fans mixing in well with the local student population from goldsmiths. tv screens to watch sport if you want to or just chill out over a pint with your newspaper. some pubs you can walk into and get a positive feel about. this is definitely one of them. twizzle19 - 3 Sep 2009 00:19
Much as I adore a pint or two of Hobgoblin, I must confess I find the pub a bit and miss. It can be great, but it can also be... not great. That said, it seems to cater best to groups, and serves its mostly-Goldsmiths clientele (which I am not) very well, with excellent prices, Wii, huge beer garden and a good variety of things going on during the week. Sunday's quiz night is always entertaining, whether you're playing or not. The ales are good (usually 4 available: Hobgoblin, Landlord, Pedigree and IPA) should you happen upon one of the staff who know how to pour one (it shouldn't have a Guinness head, guys!) From night to night, it's never easy to tell whether it'll be a quiet, old-fashioned boozer or trying to be a student club night, complete with lacklustre DJs. Of a weeknight, the pub serves a great Thai menu - in range and quality - and does a roast on Sundays, which I would hope has improved since they introduced it, if only to compete with the Amersham Arms. Try it, by all means... have a great night, if that's the way the Hob is that night... but have a backup plan, just in case. amckinna - 20 Jul 2009 00:15
