user reviews of the Dalston Jazz Bar, Kingsland

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

I love this place! Went there last Saturday/Sunday around 3 am. The music was amazing - I couldn't believe that I finally found a place in London that plays Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald. Only drank caipirinhas (£4.50), so can't really judge the drinks menu. It's really tiny, there are only 2 toilets unfortunately, which are also used by both men and women, but don't let this scare you! This place is great, perfect for a late night out and the staff was super-nice.

Think I can explain the difference in the opinion of the posts below. I happened to visit a few years ago and this place was wicked. Really good selection of bottled beers, varied people, really friendly bar staff (about 5 old black blokes). A legend night amongst my friends who were there.

Then.......

Went back there 2 months ago....oh dear. Prices had rocketed, bar staff had completely changed and were in uniforms tryin to punt expensive cocktails at you...FFS!!!!

Tunes were abysmal.....now playing 'Now that's what I call insipid jazz/funk/Mambo Numer 5 (without the irony) poo. When I went up to the DJ and asked him if he could play something which would surprise everyone, i.e. slightly different to Heart FM, he said he wasn't allowed to due to 'music policy'.

In short, a unique place destroyed by catering to moneyed Guardian readers who'd heard about it in the Weekend section.

Shame.

I've no idea what that last review is on about! I went last night and the bloke behind the bar was friendliness itself; he was dead helpful and chatty and gave the place a really nice atmosphere of relaxed welcome. I gather the downside is that it does get quite packed when it's in full swing but as it's not an immense place I think you'd have to expect that anyway. It's like someone's set it up in their front room, very ad hoc! (Albeit with plate glass windows surrounding.)And it has the benefit of being open until the small hours and offering reasonably priced drinks. I would definitely plan on going back.

in the good old days this was an absolutely fantastic bar to go to until people from outside of Hackney started drinking in it and turned it into a meat market full of Nathan Barley types (including the bar staff who are incredibly rude). It is very charming during the week, although on one occassion I did see about 5 rats running around outside which was not very nice, but when in Dalston....

Bizarre! Its like you're drinking in a greasy spoon with comfy leather seats. A bloke plays records very badly and keeps getting the volume wrong either blasting it at you or so you can't hear it at all. They have a range of cocktails and continental lagers and the owner actually brings your drinks to you at the table. This place has a very curious charm, if you are ever in the area check it out, open late
