This pub has the feel of a council estate pub and is a little frayed around the edges. Youngs Ordinary was the only real ale available, with another handpull vacant. Westons Organic cider is available in bottles. Pool tables can be seen at either end of the bar. Horse racing from Southwell on the TV was keeping the locals happy. Not a place I would rush back to in a hurry. blue_scrumpy - 6 Dec 2010 21:36
BenG, Sorry for not being very clear. By off the beaten track, I just meant that atmosphere was pretty chilled, and it wasn't jam-packed like some of the pubs nearby can get during the evening. Not empty, but a few locals who were up for a chat, and a barman who took it upon himself to entertain us for as long as we wanted, and got involved in our banter as the night progressed. To be fair, I've never been in for a drink by myself, but I've never found the atmosphere to be lacking when with mates. Maybe you caught it on an off-day. I live in Chiswick, but have been back so many times that I now consider the Grove my local, and Anton (the barman) a friend. Sure the decor is a bit tacky (and it looks like a bomb shelter from outside), and the Gents are pretty shocking (especially the graffiti on the walls), but it serves a great pint, and you can always feel welcome. Has made for so many great nights. bobdebilde - 15 Jul 2007 20:23
After going in this pub once then checking the comments on here out of interest, I had to return again as I couldn't believe the previous comments were about the same pub. Imagine my surprise when I found that I had not made a mistake and this was the same pub I was thinking of. To be fair, the service was good. But that's where the plus points of this pub end. Off the beaten track? It's next to a Sommerfield's on Battersea Park Road. From the outside, it looks like an extension of the supermarket. Inside it feels more like a plastic bar in Newquay than a pub and there wasn't much of an atmosphere. Pretty cheap and good service yes, but it has nothing else going for it. I have no idea what the previous posters were thinking of when they commented. BenG - 19 Feb 2007 10:05
Best pub in London; best barman in the world. anonymous - 19 Dec 2006 19:28
What a pub! The barman is a legend (though he drinks Foster's); it's spacious yet cosy, with sofas and a pool table, it's relatively inexpensive for London, and it's off the track beaten by the hoi polloi. Can't fault it - it has everything you would want in a local. bobdebilde - 14 Dec 2006 14:43
