| Visited when passing by boat. Steep steps up from 'the cut' but worth the climb to find 10 ales on. Most were sampled by our crew & all were in excellent condition. Friendly staff. Decor dated. MG_the_beerhunter - 28 Sep 2008 18:36 |
| The pub has a couple of rooms for let if you are staying overnight (Congleton is just about half way between Glasgow and London). Fine selection of beers, although the bar is a little on the small size and the decoration has seen better days; nevertheless, a spot-on pint, friendly staff and well worth searching out. | Visited last week and found it strangely depressing! Reasonable beer but not a lot of atmosphere...kept looking for John Cleese but he failed to appear! Probably won't return unless I'm on a boating trip. strangebrew - 4 Oct 2007 16:00 |
| Visited in the evening whilst passing through Congleton by boat, a friendly traditional pub with a good selection of well kept beers convenient for the station as well as the canal. Landlord took the trouble to get a torch and show us back down the steep steps to our boat in the dark. Borage - 1 Aug 2006 14:07 |
| Comments by Jimbo are noted. However a full refurbishment commenced a couple of weeks after his visit. The pub is now clean and bright, while still retaining it's charm and individuality. The loos are spotless and have no "pong". There are 7 real ales on, and a good selection of lagers. The home-cooked food is out of this world! The pub is aparantly known to regulars as Fawlty Towers due to the zany landlord Tony's uncanny resemblence to John Cleese! Well worth more than a passing visit. Moosey - 23 Jun 2005 21:52 |
