| After living and running a guest house in Bassenthwaite for nearly 12 years. My family and guests used to visit the pub regularly; we have always got on well with all the landlords. I must say though when the new landlords (Susan and Mike) took over earlier this year (March 2010) the pub started going downhill very rapidly they are rude to all customers and even ruder to their staff, (they have gone through more members of staff in the last six month than all the previous Landlords put together) Making them cut every corner possible to send out cheep crap food at the highest price. There management skills leave a lot to be desired, they ask you when you will be leaving as soon as you set down your knife and fork, they tell you if you don’t order your pudding as you are finishing your main meal that you are not allowed one as you are cluttering up the tables for other customers, Children are not welcome at all and several times i have heard of parent been asked to leave if they have children or if they have been allowed to stay the landlord has shouted at the kids for no reason and made the parents feel very unwelcome! There is plenty of other country pubs in the area some a little further (5 to 15 mins at most) away than others but are defiantly worth the drive to eat somewhere where you are made feel welcome and are going to get good food at a reasonable price. (Pubs I would recommend are: Odd fellows Arms @ Caldbeck, Weatchief @ Embleton, Lakeside inn @ Aspatria and Snooty Fox @ Uldale) With abit of look they won’t make it through the winter here as previous Landlords have! Through the winter the previous landlords have all relied on support from the locals to get them through but I can guarantee this pair will not be getting any support from the locals as I am yet to hear a good report from a local or any of my guests!!! | Thoroughly enjoyed our visit here –a welcome unspoilt pub with good atmosphere. Good range of drinks and food. Service was friendly and fast. mozzzzzz - 13 Sep 2010 10:49 |
| The Sun is no longer an inn, it's a restaurant, drinkers are tolerated (just about) by Cruella Deville of "You'll be lucky" if you want to dine here fame. There is no room to sit/stand for a pint at the bar and all tables usually reserved, you may be lucky enough to be permitted to utilise a table before the diners appear at the appointed time, but don't count on it. Have been a patron for many years but sadly no more under the current management. Rebus - 11 Sep 2010 16:54 |
| Excellent pub grub and real ale at reasonable prices.Wine list was very good too. Friendly staff. Best to book as always packed. We found this goldmine after walking on Skiddaw and had a late lunch. We liked it so much we came back for several dinners although on our first attempt we couldn't get in as it was packed so we booked for the next night. We found the two sittings for dinner useful to know in advance. We tried the early sitting after a long day walking and had no problem giving up the table for the 8pm sitting as we had more drinks outside and were able to enjoy the stunning view up Ullock Pike on Skiddaw. When it got a bit cooler we came inside and had a coffee at the bar. When we came for the late sitting , again the food was great and we didn't have to move until the pub closed! All in all a great find and would recommend it to anyone. blencathra - 11 Aug 2010 13:35 |
| Great food, great atmosphere and a stunning view. The staff and other guests were really friendly and we had a very enjoyable evening. Clearly some locals eating here too, always a good sign! We will definately call in again next time we are up this way. IainJenkins - 18 Jul 2010 13:41 |
