The Elephant closed in October 2014 as the block it is part of is to be demolished. Perhaps Young's lack of investment was due to the fact that they knew the pub would be closing.

The exterior of this pub didn't look too promising, and the plain wooden interior is nothing special either. Service was good however and three Wells & Young beers were on handpull - Ordinary, Special & Bombardier. I managed to squeeze past the raucous City crowd at the bar to a quieter area at the rear where there were stools around the exterior walls and a TV showing the news. There are no tables. Adorning the walls are a large picture of a station (presumably Fenchurch St) and a couple of Hogarth prints, alongside several smaller prints. The large porcelain elephant behind the bar looked quite impressive. Porcelain elephants and a friendly barmaid apart, I couldn't find anything to recommend about this place.

Utterly disappointing and why this place is in the GBG I do not know. Only beers on were Bombardier (that you can get anywhere in London) and Youngs (very) Ordinary (which you can also get anywhere). There are at least 5 other better pubs in crawling distance (Ship, Lamb, Wine Lodge, EI Arms, Counting House).

This is a good pub which has been let down by a lack of investment from the Brewery (Youngs) especially the downstairs bar and the toilets which are in desperate need of refurbishment. The beer is always good and the bar staff friendly and generally quick to serve, it's just unfortunate that Youngs won't put it's hand in it's pocket and spend some of the million's it got from selling the brewery on refurbishing it's pubs.
