I'm always interested to go to this bar.
They don't sell guinness though, which is annoying, but the alternatives are perfectly acceptable.

A cracking little bar. Always busy in the evening but usually somewhere to sit. Great handpull and bottled beers. Friendly staff but clearly not employed for their ale knowledge. Good music, simple decor, chatty atmosphere. The loo's need a sprucing up though. Go to get away from televised anything and enjoy!

Cramped, but worth it. Super selection and unpretentious surroundings. Nice.

Brilliant TT's tied house, tiny but v. welcoming. Best place in Yorkshire to drink Yorkshire's best beer
11 Jun 2008 13:49
Just been voted CAMRA pub of the season for the umpteenth time, and deservedly so.
29 Mar 2008 23:45
Excellent small pub, serves excellent ale. Full range of Taylor’s on plus a couple of guest ales on as well. Its about the best pint of Taylor’s I’ve ever had.
Good friendly atmosphere and just down the road from Keighley Railway Station.
Its a must if you’re visiting Keighley.

Very good indeed. Traditional but welcoming, good Tim Taylors plus guests, and decent pub decor. Combine with a trip to Huddersfield (Grove etc) and spot the difference in style.
23 Jul 2008 20:13
A most agreeable pub where the landlord clearly puts great emphasis on serving an excellent pint. We went on Sunday so my mate got the £1.65 ale, while I had the Timmy's. Newspapers and books, and I don't recall loud music.

Excellent

I totally agree with sheepdogs mate[funny name]Andy and Sarah are a breath of fresh air pub is clean garden is back to how it was when Bob was manager cut weekly and now not a wilderness as when Colin was there.
Must also agree with russel sprout about line cleaning it now appears to be done.Although the beers were better towards the end of Colins rein.OBB was one of the best pints i,ve had since Bob left WELL DONE ANDY AND SARAH
5 Aug 2008 22:18
What transformation! What a turnaround! Andy & Sarah have made a massive difference to the Star Inn. A great atmosphere, lots of laughter and much much busier than when the reliefs were in residence. Grass in the beer garden is regularly cut and maintained - [Colin (relief manager) take note you lazy so and so!!!].
I feel very sorry for the patrons of the The Angel & White Horse, Tadcaster, who now have to endure the pub management skills of the 2 morons, Colin & Monica - why don't Sam Smiths sack them!!!
28 Jul 2008 17:50
Nice to see a change of management, Andy and Sarah certainly know how to get a failing public house back on its feet.

The standard of the beers and lager has certainly improved. Someone should have told the previous manager and manageress what line cleaner is!

Gem of a pub, might be a bit 'working mans' for some tastes, but well worth a visit for the ales and character of the place. Has strong music links too so a good place to chill or rock depending upon your mood.
5 Jul 2008 11:26
Great pub with an excellent selection of beer, all in good nick. The highlight of the day - spent a happy couple of hours in here before watching my hopeless football team get relegated at Elland Road. Bit off the beaten track so great location if you want a quiet pre-match pint
4 May 2008 20:50
An unspoilt old fashioned rough and ready boozer on the corner of a main road, surrounded by vast new buildings. It's a lovely warren of a place with four regular ales plus four guests. Only criticism is that there was no ale stronger than 4.2%ABV on my visit.

The poster below me is spot on. What has happened to all the obscure Belgian beer? It is still a good pub the staff are all grumpy and never have a smile on there faces but apart from that its very good.
25 Jun 2008 02:39
This place was much better when it was O’Kells.
The beer is still as good but the food isn’t. The menu has gone all fancy (what happened to the huge chunky chip butties?). I was last in a few months ago and the only thing that I found appealing on the menu was burger & chips which wasn’t bad but could have been better.
28 May 2008 20:46
I have since had a chat with Dean Pugh the manager & owner of Mr Foley's, he has offered a complimentary meal and apologised for the actions of his staff. I just wanted to emphasis that a poor attitude to customers will drive customers away, I just hope that the relevant bar staff get a good telling of by Dean.

Good contrast to the Boltmakers; a mixed crowd and a very interesting beer menu. Close in feel to Sheffields Valley of Beer (or that great music pub near Aberdeen docks). Moorhouses was average I thought, but less than £2 and the pub is a must.
23 Jul 2008 20:10
Have to agree with Greywolf. This pub is underrated, and I'm not sure why. Maybe it's the location, which is a bit semi-industrial. Some of the best beer in the area is to be found here - and that's saying something. I'd say the ales are almost up there with the Brown Cow and the Boltmakers. I like it more with every visit.
16 Dec 2007 20:13
Sorry John, I disagree. You have to visit this little gem of a place. As boozers go it's distinctly old-fashioned - almost spit and sawdust. But the beer is ALWAYS excellent in presentation and taste, the staff know their ales and are most friendly, and I've heard that the mid-week music scene is very good too. Add to this their "Upstairs/Downstairs" beer festival (always brilliant) and you've a pub in a million.

AND NO FOOD!!! GREEEAT!!!

This was a brilliant pub even before ossett brewery took over. Massive choice of beers. Best pub in Huddersfield by far - if not yorkshire.
29 Jul 2008 09:40
Went in again on teh way home from work the other week - Budvar dark on tap, and some other great imported lagers including a cherry lager- ver nice good friendly pub, that nevre fails to disapoint.
19 Jul 2008 14:48
Great pub - It's got a festival array of real ales and some top continental beers but it is one of the best places for real cider I know of in Yorkshire with regular offerings from Thatchers! Added to this it does not have pool and the juke box has proper music played at a level where conversation rules!

Great selection of ales. Busiest pub in Leeds on a Friday after the office bods are let out of their cages. Now that Leeds United aren't good anymore, matchday isn't a problem so much here either(Football fans do indeed only sing when they're winning). Food is ok but its the beer you'll come back for. Checkout my pub crawl to either start or finish at the taps.
13 Jun 2008 13:15
Too crowded and too many BT types in there.
Better to go to The Prince of Wales over the road.
25 Feb 2008 11:57
Had a great pint of Bradfords brewers Ruby Mild (4.4%)....good atmosphere in the pub... unlike its past rep as home of Leeds' football 'reception committee'

Sorry - blame the cider - that should read get down to the Catalans game a week on Tuesday. No apostrophe needed here!
Slapped hand! Dave - stop laughing!!!
PS - also been drinking Old Peculier this afternoon at the Plough at Warmthorpe - doesn't help my grammar but it's worth a visit as well.
22 Jun 2008 20:30
OK - bit late but I have to say that the landlord's decision to take out the eminently drinkable Dry Blackthorn Cider and replace it with Bulmers was anathema to me. No pub in the city centre has Dry Blackthorn now (if anybody knows differently please post a message) - we appear to have drifted into Strongbowland - the blandest rubbish available. First taste refreshment my a**e!! Bulmers is slightly better but still too sweet. For anybody wanting decent cider go to Fernando's where you can get 6.0abv @ £2.75 a pint - sorry can't remember the name - still too drunk and amazed about Trinity's fightback in the last 10 minutes against Hull KR. 4th? - get the oyxgen out!! and get down to the Catalan's game a week on Tuesday
Trinity Tyke - 22.06.08

Classic Wakefield pub, hasn't changed much, even after the fire. Good value pub grub and as decent a pint of John Smiths you can get.

I regularly make the trip to Huddersfield to go boozing, as its got some good venues - Vox, Zephyr, Lifeboat...and this is right up there. Great range, bargain sunday lunch and live jazz too. Waiting for the all-too-infrequent trains back to Sheffield is never a chore here!
28 Apr 2008 10:48
I think the Head of Steam is a great pub, I've never had any problems and I've been going in there regularly for the past 18 months. The Station Tavern isn't a patch on the Head of Steam - I've only been in the Station once and got a very unfriendly welcome. I would definately recommend the Head of Steam; a wide range of real ales and plenty of ciders! (Stowford, Woodpecker, Strongbow, and Westons in bottles)
10 Feb 2008 22:53
Nowhere near as good as it used to be. Still a reasonable selection of real ales, but guests are frequently off and staff are more often than not clueless on how to pour them. Expect to be treated with contempt if you request a top up!

Food is decent, but now somewhat overpriced. Drinks are fast becoming extortionate.

A brilliant pub I've visited time and time again, even though it is miles out of my way! The atmosphere and welcome are great, the food also lovely. Some great events too including the Open Mic nights and quiz nights. Only £2 for ALL guest ales, 2 on at a time.

Gary and Bev (who own this pub) and their family must be two of the most welcoming licensees around. Great setting just up fromt the canal tunnel (obviously) and well worth a visit...there are some great walks around here to work up a thirst. Always good selection of beers on and always service with a smile (they do worry that you might be their "mystery shopper"!) Plenty of special dining nights that seem very popular. It's a lovely traditional welcoming pub; can't fault it!

Superb real ale outlet, top quality beer and fantastic range. Can't think of many better.

Absolutely brilliant pub with fantastic selection of draught and bottled beers. Empress of India porter was particularly excellent.
25 Nov 2007 00:04
Looks unpromising from the outside - a drab building on a busy junction on the edge of the town centre, but inside it's a real ale oasis. Ten or so to choose from, with superb variety and quality.

I recently spent an evening in this pub whilst I was on a business trip in the area. It came highly recommended on BITE so I gave it a try.

The staff (& punters) were all extremely friendly. There was a large selection of real ales & ciders on offer.

I would highly recommend this pub to anybody who likes real ale & a warm friendly atmosphere.

Superb ale-house with real character and impressive beer range. For some reason I thought ownership had changed recently but looked every inch the local XAMRA facourite it clearly is. Also sells the great City Gent fanzine.

A well as PoTy 2006, now holds PoTY 2007 PLUS those first two PoTS awards from local CAMRA branch.
Curry nights on hold at present but due for imminent return, just like a certain group of SEAGULS !!!!!!

I used to go here a few years ago and it was good but the transformation is incredible. You can now look out at everything going on by the river while drinking one of a selection of great ales. It does get very busy from Thursday to Sunday and the staff sometimes have difficulty keeping on top of it but it's definitely worth a visit. Also, if it is crowded on entry (unfortunately the bar points out towards the door which can cause a jam) ease your way down to the left where there is generally space.
26 Apr 2008 23:03
This pub has gone right downhill since Ossett took over it. The beer was always a bit unreliable, but they've took it to a whole new level. Used to be a regular, but got sick of never getting a decent pint. Fair enough, the bar was spruced up, but what about the toilets? Great if you like paddling in piss.
6 Feb 2008 21:49
Never used to like the atmosphere when it was Riverhead and for me the beers were watery. Since Ossett bought it, moved the bar the place is airy and more spacious.

Most importantly they sell Ossett and it's spot on.

One of the greatest beers in England... go and get it, feed the ducks and get a wobble on.
