I know Mannings much much much more than "greenarrow" because I go there everyday and some of the staff are my friends.
And also I am a handyman of the pub.
There is no drug problems at the pub at all.

Everyone, Mannings is a marvellous pub and if you doubt about it please go there to check it by yourself.

The comment from "greenarrow" is completely untrue.

CJOBY Says 'Needles to say, all the staff are fantastic' .... Is he referring there is a drugs problem at this establishment ?

A reasonable range of ale (usually at least three available) and normally well kept - unfortunately it's very expensive here though. Has a lovely walled in beer garden out the back (can be a bit of a sun trap). Serves food of the bar snacks and pub grub variety.

Reviews by BITE users:

Quality pub, brewery and restaurant. Each time I've visited they've had 5-6 handpumps on, including 3 of their own beers. Perfect quality of beer in a pleasant atmosphere. Agree with Quinno - a must visit if in BSE - it's by far the best pub in the town.
3 Jul 2008 00:52
A lovely brewpub, offering up some nice beer in quiet (but not lacking in atmosphere) environment.

Odd to see all the brewing paraphernalia on display, gives it a bit of a USP.

Beers taste good, and food is available. Diners mix with drinkers which may put some people off a bit, but it didn't bother me.

A must visit in BSE (and there aren't many of those).

Friendly free house brew pub in BSE. In a totally G/K dominated area this is by far the best choice. Five hand pumps with three of their own brewed beers. Old Cannon Best Bitter ABV 3.8%, Gunner's Daughter ABV 5.5% & Blonde Bombshell ABV 4.2%. The two other hand pumps are Adnams Bitter and one ever changing guest ale. On Saturday this was Puddlers by I think Thomas Guest. I cannot however find the beer or the brewery in the GBG. I saw they were selling Old Cannon polo shirts for £15.00. I may have been tempted however without the words 'brewery' on it, I did not want anyone thinking I was supporting a certain North London team.

A real premier league ale pub which lucky Ipswich residents have two. This and The Dove within walking distance although its probably about 10 - 15 minutes walk.

A great selection of ale on offer must have been about 14 mid week. Covering local and national micro breweries. The beers on offer cover all the beer styles light/traditional/dark. On the blackboard above the bar it has the beer style indicated next to the beers. A mild and stout were available on my visit which were both in very good condition.

This pub is a winner for real ale. Always brews from the Fat Cat brewery in Norwich along with a good mind bogling selection from other brewers around the country.

The scotch eggs are large and the other bar food tasty. A winner.
16 Feb 2008 11:16
Good pub, used to meet up here every Friday after work and stay till closing. Excellent giant scotch eggs! haha

Recommended if you want an out of town beer, it's worth the trek!

Back again for a brief visit to Suffolk. No change at the Lord Nelson - everything as good as ever. Had a great lunch and a lovely pint of Adnams, with the usual friendly bar staff in attendance.
27 May 2008 16:45
Nice pub, nice location, nice people, nice staff, nice interior, great ale (Adnams of course!).

Had food and that was ok, gets very busy so get in there early. The staff coped extremly well and were very friendly through out. My only nag was they seemed very keen to get you out or away from tables by taking away plates when people on the table were still eating!! I hate that, so upsetting!!

Apart from the above thing everything else was 10/10 so I give this a 8/10.
17 May 2008 23:40
The Lord Nelson is one of my favourite pubs - great beer, good food and pleasant staff. I try and get here 2 or 3 times a year. I enjoy it most when it's blowing up a gale outside, the rain and wind are lashing down, and I'm sat by the fire with a plate of grub and a pint of Old...

The Emperor has improved by leaps and bounds since Nigel left it, and hopefully the same will happen here. This goes to show, you can't run a successful pub by sticking a few real ales on the bar and letting everything else go to seed. As I said in my previous reviews, this pub has been scruffy, freezing cold and dark on my visits- on one occasion so cold I couldn't stay to finish my beer. It really wouldn't have taken much investment to whitewash the walls, stick up a few traditional pub signs by way of decor, turn on the lights and central heating and offer a bit of pub grub. Anyone wanting to run a successful real ale pub should pop along to the Dove or Fat Cat to see how it's done - it's not rocket science, but great real ale isn't the only thing on offer, customers need to feel comfortable enough to want to stay. Hopefully this pub will be taken on by someone who is able to offer west Ipswich the great real ale pub it really needs.

I had the rumours confirmed at lunch time today. Nigel, the landlord is leaving the pub this Sunday. What a shame this pub was not more successful! Ipswich residents you should be ashamed of yourselves for not supporting.

This is one of my favourite lunch time destinations with excellent beer quality and conversation. The beer was always reasonably priced and the pub was always friendly. Nigel is already removing some of his items from the pub. At lunch time before I asked I noticed that the front 3 hand pumps that he added have now gone. The juke box is in the process of having the cd's removed.

Anyway there are still two lovely dark beers available today. Make sure if you want to say goodbye to Nigel come this week before Sunday. Nigel is planning on taking a break from the pub trade at the current time.
2 Apr 2008 19:29
Nigel now has a regularly updated beer list at
http://www.rosecrownipswich.blogspot.com

tip top ales plus some fantastic chatter as long as the bands aren't on when it can get a little noisy.

Smallest pub in Britain, with a mummified cat hanging from the ceiling.

Beer is greedily marked up by Greedy King, so have a half, savour the uniqueness (as you'll only need a half to take it all in) and be on your way to the Cannon...
24 Jun 2008 18:33
If you're going to buy drinks for everybody the Nutshell's certainly the place to do it!
19 Jun 2008 14:09
I really enjoyed this pub, there was a guy in there who owns a pub just outside Ongar and had come up to see the brewery about something and insisted on buying everyone drinks in there.Good crowd and beer, and excellent for just watching the world go by.

Very friendly pub on an early Friday Evening. Both the staff and customers were very friendly with good conversation. Another G/K pub with only IPA available so we only had a half. Trouble was that we were talking too much and had to order a second. The pub was split into two sides. Two TV's were available with England Cricket on one and Euro 2008 on the other.
17 Jun 2008 00:43
Ive now been to newmarket 3 times and i love the pub. The staff do make you feel very welcome....My mates from Surrey will def pop in.
13 May 2008 13:31
It is possible to disagree with the fact that being very close to a large night club makes no differance to the fact that the Yard is a very friendly and well run pub, Its the people that make the differance !!!!

I have been a regular at The Golden Boar Inn for the past 8 months after moving nearby. The food is exceptional and seems to be ever-improving!!! The staff are always courteous and helpful. I took my family out for a meal on Easter Sunday after raving about it to all of them for such a long time. And after reading the review by "snewton" I'm shocked by the inaccuracy and unfair comments that were made. The Golden Boar's reputation is fantastic both with locals and food lovers! The new owners have done a great job of re-inventing this place in such a short space of time.I'd recommend it to anyone who appreciates real food!

Stayed here for the last two nights. The accommodation was lovely and the food including breakfast was superb. Great pub in a beatiful village.

Lovely food, great staff, nice atmosphere - shame its so popular!
28 May 2008 15:12
We had a thoroughly enjoyable lunch at this pub - lovely location, good ale, excellent service and outstanding food. The fish (sea bass and skate) was particularly well executed and the burgers amongst the best I have tasted. A bit pricey but sadly that seems to be the case right across Suffolk. Thoroughly recommended.

First class Cod and chips and a cracking pint of Adnams Explorer. Staff could do with cheering up a bit though !!
9 Aug 2008 20:29
Our first pint after stepping off the bus in Southwold. Already busy at 12:40 in the main bar which seems predominantly for food and we were advised that the 'Back Bar' may be more to our liking, which it was. A nice little room to the rear but still with a view through the entrance hall to the street. Fine pint of Adnams bitter and a friendly & knowledgeable barman who told us about the new 'Spindrift'; not for me, but with which Adnams may be trying to target the keg market maybe for some radical lager drinkers who want to start tasting something in their pint. The bar had some brass nautical navigation equipment in the corner and a picture and story of a submarine hunting vessel disguised as a fishing skiff (the submarine won). Better by far than our next stop, its Adnams sister hotel The Swan, although bizarrely the same barman popped up there too. He should teach the Swan's barman some etiquette in customer relations.
6 Dec 2007 22:30
Ignore the identikit bareboard gastropub at the front and soldier on until you get to the cosy wood panelled snug at the back. Suddenly it all becomes worth while.

Top notch Adnams, of course.

I have run pubs for Bass and Scottish & Newcastle (as they were then known), from Colchester to Coventry. All had restaraunts. I think I can fairly say I am reasonably experienced enough to comment between a good pub and a bad pub.
28 Jul 2008 12:00
I may like to surgest to the people that write these reveiws a little something, TRY RUNNING A PUB. It aint easy. Stop making it personel and remember its only a meal not life or death. Rant over. I think the 'Butt' Is a great place, take the time to go down relax and enjoy your visit. Yes I agree sometimes the food can take a little to long to be served but hey YOU TRY IT!
7 Jul 2008 21:21
We visited the Butt this month and cannot fault it. Absolutely fantastic food, the best fish and chips i've ever had. The staff were all efficient and really friendly, especially Chris, who somebody on a previous posting has said was rude! We thought he was a fantastic chap with a great sense of humour, something you dont see often enough. We will definately be going again, can't wait.

Arrived around 5.30 on a sunny Thursday afternoon, plenty of people on the benches in front and behind, but absolutely no-one inside, unsurprisingly. The location is everything here and the beer was naturally very well-kept, although like everywhere else in Southwold, on the expensive side. It is faintly disappointing that such a conscientous brewer as Adnams could not keep their prices lower than normal in their home town - transportation costs must be about 1p a pint, I would have thought.
1 Aug 2008 23:32
We were very disappointed with our meal - we are all vegetarians and had the red pepper dish which was priced at £10.95. The food was cold when it arrived, there was very little of it and the chick pea part of it not only smelled but also tasted of disinfectant. We felt that it was extremely over priced but would have overlooked this if it had tasted good.
31 Jul 2008 17:25
Although an attractive pub, the current price of £3.20 for a price of Explorer can not be justified and the fish and chips has deteriorated in quality since our first visit some 6 years ago.

I think this used to be the main entrance to the Newmarket Caberet Club. It's now a large more or less open-plan bar that I would imagine appeal to drunken clubbers for a drink before going to a club. Cross between a bad JDW and a Chicago Rock Cafe... needless to say - no real ale.

So far so good. Still the best pub in the vicinity - by a country mile. The location on Market Square is quite magickal. The staff are as friendly and attentive as ever, the beer (Adnams) superbly kept and the food very reliable. Even the customers are an interesting mix.
30 Mar 2008 22:40
An excellent menu on offer hear and we weren't disappointed with the Partridge.
Excellent wine as well, didn't get chance to try the beer unfortunately. Seemed more of a restaurant than a pub, though one side is much less formal than the other.
18 Oct 2007 16:31
Stayed at The Angel at the weekend. We've stayed here regularly over the last 10 years and the food is outstanding as ever, great choice of drinks, staff friendly, efficient & make you feel very welcome.

However, on this occasion we were surprised to receive a cheeky unnotified charge on our bill for our fried breakfasts (which were previously included in the weekend tariff). As this place has been recently taken over by the Maypole Group, I hope this isn't the first change of many to turn this Hotel into a cash cow, whilst stripping away its uniqueness.

Reviews by BITE users:

On a one-day trip to Southwold, it was impossible to resist the lure of a detour on the way home to the best village pub in Britain, bar none. Our first visit for over four years and nothing had changed, apart from the people now running the place, although I'm glad to say they were as welcoming as any previous regime. Wonderfully kept beer dispensed in true old-fashioned style, cosily warm & friendly atmosphere and a feeling of being totally away from it all make this the most rewarding of pub-going experiences possible.
1 Aug 2008 23:46
This pub must have been one that put "Good" into the phrase "Good Old Days". As soon as you enter, you are transported into a long bygone era, when life was much simpler and people more content. This is before you even order your beer. Divided into little rooms, having high-backed chairs and real fires are just the start. Photographs on the walls and old artefacts on shelves and windowsills add to the wonderful country pub atmosphere. There is no bar, and beer is served by gravity from barrels in a back room. A good selection of draught (I had a beautiful pint of Adnam's Old Ale) and bottled beers, charmingly served, at the right temperature, all add to the feel-good factor. The bus service to the nearest railhead, Halesworth, is not frequent, but the times allow you to have two and a half hours on a lunchtime visit.
17 Feb 2008 19:15
We visited this pub on Xmas eve 2007 after reading about in in the CAMRA national Inventory. I've visited pubs all over the UK and am choosy about these I like; the best ones have great real ale, food, service and atmosphere. The Low House has to be THE best- no contest. Not only is it an beautifully unspoilt piece of history with real fire and timber panelling intact, it serves the best pint of Adnams I've ever had, and the food (in my case the steal and ale pie) is beyond superb. As if that werent enough the charming waitress did all she could to make our visit memorable and without being intrusive or over solicitous.
I have previously tried to imagine what the perfect pub would be like (and even wrote about it). Well, this is it. I urge anyone who reads this to use it, and keep this institution, the epitomy of what an English pub should be, alive.
