Super super super place, Hard to imagine what we would of lost if they had not opened the severn valley railway. Top display of railway artifacts. Brill beers selection; Derventio 'Venus', York 'Decade', Titanic 'Mild', Hobsons 'Town Crier', Stonehenge 'K.P.A. and Batham's. Great to be able to get a plastic glass to take away on the train.

It seems that nearly everyone getting off the Severn Valley Railway trains heads straight for this pub, and with good reason. Excellent selection of quality beers, just get in quick before the crowds.

If you see someone say that someone is safe. Which is as much as we can hope for when the wolves are running.

Thank you for your reply and fair do's: 10/10 for caring. I guess I should have brought the beer back but that's a different issue in itself. Some people just don't like the 'hassle' of complaining - especially when you are new to a pub and there are regulars at the bar, and it's quiet - I'm sure many people will identify with this. I've taken a beer back in my own local and have been given a very strange look by the staff!

Stvane: Banks' Mild is much nicer than Black Sheep, which I find a bit dull. Each to their own and yes, I will pop in again next time I'm in Ironbridge.
7 Aug 2008 18:52
Mark_J I am really sorry you did not enjoy your visit to the pub. I do have a few questions to ask if the Mild you were drinking was tangy why oh why did you not bring it back to the bar where the young lady working would of investigated the problem. On looking into it I have found you recieved the last of the barrel. If we had known this at the time it would of been flushed and the new one would of been put on and you would of been offered either of our excellent guest ales at no extra charge. As for how we got Best pub in Telford is due to the fact we pride ourselves on how we look after our customers and are always open to comments as feed back is the only way to discover how to improve things. Thank you for your comments its a shame you could not have made them in person.
7 Aug 2008 13:51
Perhaps Mark_J you should have complained about the "Tangy Mild" I'm sure it would have been changed for you. It often happens with real ale near the bottom of the cask. It is the nature of the beast. More importantly why have Banks's when Black Sheep and Broadside were both on offer? I had a couple of pints of each last night and they were excellent. Perhaps you should try another visit to "The Best Pub in Telford" maybe on a busier night to find out why it gained over 2/3rds of the vote.

Cracking real ale pub this, several ales too choose from, and all very Quaffable.when ever i return to the area, this place is defintely on the list, and even go out of my way for a pint here.
26 Jul 2008 15:13
I am a fan of the Benbow. Wide range of beers and pleasant atmosphere make it a great place for a quiet drink. I believe they operate an over 30's policy which accounts for the older clientele.
4 Jan 2008 13:03
Pub serves 6 casks and 3 ciders. Only open in the evenings. A pleasant, relaxed pub with a small, but attractive beer garden. Background 70s music. An all round decent place.

Reviews by BITE users:

Nice pub to start the night. Welcoming landlord who seems to know about his ales and offers samples. Bar on the left, outside sitting area out the back and a nice wood panelled lounge on the right. The lounge is fitted out with cushioned banquettes round the walls with tables and stools and a couple of pews with cushions and open fireplace. Good selection of real ales including local ones.
23 May 2008 00:51
It was quiet when we called in shortly after opening, but it was a warm welcome we got and what a good choice of ales available. We wandered round the rooms and enjoyed the real fires. They do so much make a difference to the feel of a pub.
26 Mar 2008 23:54
Positively the best of the four pubs at the top of Coton Hill. Nice staff and good atmosphere add to the experience of being able to choose from a list of six changing real ales, quality guaranteed in quality surroundings. A welcome bonus is the midnight license, although the doors close about an hour earlier. The only midday opening is on a Sunday. Don’t let the mention of hill put you off – it’s not steep and less than ten minute’s walk from the bus and rail stations

Right - ok, I've been back and it was much MUCH better than last time, I stand by those comments as that was the experience I had, I'll put it down to an off night. The Cartwrights weren't exactly the last word as hosts I know (John the barman could be very rude) so maybe i shouldn't have made them out to sound like saints.
Anyway, this time, the food was nice and the beer excellent and a nice atmosphere about the place, it was busy
7 Mar 2008 15:45
Having read Harry's comments, I wonder if he has a white stick and a guide dog! I have seen the amazing improvements that have been made at this pub since the new owners came in, the re-decoration is much better, and the new menu is well appreciated as the previous owners didn't even offer a full food menu. The now extra cold lager is much better than the warm wee the old owners used to sell, and the real ale is hard to beat. Personally, if I had to choose a pub to drink at in Ruyton, it would be this one.
21 Feb 2008 19:52
I disagree greatly with the other comment on this public house, Before the new owners took over the place was not up to standard. The beer was undrinkable and the place had no atmostphere. As a citizen of the village i have seen the hard work been put into the refurb to this place by not only the landlord but his staff. The drink selection is superb, the dining room is absolutly incrediable and they have even given the louge its own personal little area. I could not complain about the food/beer/atmostphere or management. Congratulations to them for bringing a sinking pub back to our village that we onced liked but now love.

As good as it was three years ago. Its proximity to the Admiral Benbow, however, mostly just means that you've got a decent pub to visit when you find that the AB isn't open, which seems to be much of the time.
17 Jun 2008 13:53
This is a lovely friendly pub with a good choice of ales. Interesting rooms, and a back bar as well that we nearly missed with different ales on.
26 Mar 2008 23:38
I'm not a regular, but for a quiet pint or a bite to eat this is great. The bar has a decent range of beers and is a bit rough and ready, but I don't think thats a bad thing. The restaurant area is smarter and I can recommend the fidget pie.

Live music some nights.

This a nice cosy pub and while the beer is a little unimaginative and not exactly local, it's a Marston's house and it's not the landlord's fault. It's all in good nick too.
30 Jul 2008 20:39
Just great over May Day bank holiday. Two guys gigging in the outside bar. Folk music inside. A friendly place to go back to.
15 May 2008 07:10
I really liked this cosy pub. It was a chilly day and the real fire in the snugly bar made all the difference. Good beer and decent food. Clun is a great place for exploring the hills of South Shropshire.

This place is excellant. To quote the 'GBG' it a 'Sympathetically renovated grade II listed 16th century coaching Inn'. The job they have done is special. The is another bar out the back whick was close at time of visit but this is advertised as 7 hand pumps and as the brewery tap for the 'Bridgnorth Brewery' which is also located here. Beers on offer at time of visit were; Hobson's 'Best and Town crier',
Exmoor 'Gold', Olde Swan 'Entire' and Bridgnorth 'Apley Ale'. Tried the Apley Ale which went down very nicely.
5 Aug 2008 09:03
Complete renovation (unrecognisable as the 'old' Kings Head) and some good beers on offer.
23 Jun 2008 17:16
Enjoyed a visit to this Good Beer Guide pub while in Bridgnorth for the beer festival in September 07. It has been renovated to a great standard, and serves good real ales both from the bar in the pub, and a new bar outside where the brewery is. There are plenty of handpulls with a good choice of both their own Bridgnorth beers and guests.

Reviews by BITE users:

This is a great pub serving traditional pub food [steaks, grills, ham, lasagne, scampi etc] plus 6 hand pulled trad beers - totally unpretensious. situated by the shropshire union canal would be a joy during the warmer months. this pub was featured in older editions of the good pub guide, but appears to have been dropped recently. its a real shame because some of us still love simple things like chicken + chips!!!! maybe you could reconsider its status.its a pretty large place, large outdoor area + very family friendly
8 Feb 2008 21:33
New to the area + have adopted this place as our local!!! Great pub

Reviews by BITE users:

I can only really endorse what has been said previously about the Church Inn. It did take a little bit of finding in the labyrinth of alleyways off Ludlow’s Castle Square, but it is well worth the effort because it is a real gem and certainly deserves its high rating. The eight hand-pumps include a good selection of beers from the local Ludlow and Hobson Breweries. Hobson’s Mild seems to be extremely popular. I had to smile at what at first appears to be a smooth-flow dispenser at one end of the bar … but on closer inspection the label reads “Severn Trent Brewery – Pure Filtered H2O – ABV 0.0%”

The food, like the beer at the Church, is excellent. I can highly recommend the Sausage Baguette where you can choose the filling from a menu of several award winning sausages made by the town’s Master Butchers.

Pubs don’t come any better than the Church Inn …10/10

Fantastic find although the good lady didn't believe that I had actually visited a church! Must have been the smile on my face!!
With the exception of one, the reviews below are spot on.
30 Mar 2008 10:22
Porbably the best pub in Ludlow or even Shropshire, with eight draught beers all well kept and some pretty fine food, cheerful helpful bar staff, occasional live music, landlords selection of 60's/70's plays via his ipod.

Excellent local pub with pool table and darts.

Just to let people know - Clun is a town, despite its small size. And a great little town too.

First time in a long time that we had visited this pub and enjoyed the Sharps beer we had. Used to come for the cider festivals a few years back. It was known as the Tiddly then. Always a good pub with friendly staff and locals.
3 Jul 2008 12:26
Small, friendly country local with a large green outside area for the summer montls. 3 permanant session beers plus one changing premium ale. Simple food served at a good price. Always people stood at the bar chatting!

good beer plased to see that they are in the Good Beer guide at long last, very well deserved. Good home cooked food and good value for money
29 Jul 2008 13:33
It was nice to visit a traditional country pub with bags of character and unpretentious homecooked food. We were spoilt for choice with both the menu and the beer selection.
17 Jul 2008 23:10
Used this pub many times when walking in the area. Good selection of beers and always a good atmosphere. The eating experience however was not so good this time, food was over cooked and served on plates that felt like they had been in a furnace for an hour by staff who couldn't recommend a dish.

Renovated to a high standard after last years floods where the water was 6 foot deep inside the pub. A good range of ale and excellent bar food with friendly bar staff.
Never tried the restaurant but looked nice.
Sweet beer garden overlooking a small river though I couldn't apreciate it due to the rain...
6 Jul 2008 17:44
I'm with GrantW. Much improved on the last couple of years. Was selling an ale from the Ludlow Brewing Co just a stone's throw up the road.

If you want to eat in this establishment I suggest you take your own food with you! I booked a table for three on a Saturday for the following Sunday lunch. We arrived early, as in 20 minutes before our booked time, had to go to the bar to order, even though there were staff taking orders from tables, and were rudely told "sorry we've run out of beef, choose something else." On the good side we then went to "the Baron of Beef" in Bucknell, where we received a great welcome even though by this time it was a bit late in the afternoon, and had a fantastic beef dinner!
24 Feb 2008 20:38
Had dinner here over New Year 07/08. Staff certainly don't come across as particularly friendly initially but the food was lovely and service was prompt. When we returned on a second occasion the barman warmed somewhat so maybe it's improving!
