Great pub - cheap as chips and loads to choose from, and I've heard great things about the food as well.

Quite simply this is the best pub I've ever been in, on all counts. Just wish it was nearer to home! Pete

Wonderful pub with friendly staff. Very well kept ale. Around 10 hand pumps. There always seems to be a Derby Brewing Co ale on the bar as well as some more local brews. Great cheese and onion cobs - you put the onion in yourself as a condiment. Nice beer garden (yard) too.

Fast becoming a favourite of mine, this place has a superb array of beers at very reasonable prices, and a mint pub quiz with buffet snacks on a Monday. Worth going a bit out of your way for.

Excellent selection of ales and even better selection of your bottled Euro beers. Ale was excellent but you require sun glasses to go to the toilet. Unique Tiling job.

Fantastic pub, a victim of its own success. Very crowded at weekends, but wonderful during the day. Superb selection, you're spoilt for choice. Heard good things about the food.
25 Apr 2008 13:48
wen i first walked in here i thought id walked into a winebar...but on closer inspection it served some damn fine real ale an all...took me a bit to find this down a steep hill but was worth the walk all the same..friendly staff and a warm atmosphere.

excellent pub, superb ales....visit here when Sheffield Folk Festival is on, so good music too.
5 Mar 2008 11:58
Ended my Sheffield crawl here for the first time in over 4 years last Saturday night. Absolutely superb beers available, and the Crown ales are absolutely BURSTING with flavour.HPA was exquisite.

Friendly locals, too, namely Nick and Ashley - nice of them to invite me onto their table. This is a great pub to finish a crawl given its late licence to 12 midnight on weekends, and it should be included on any Sheffield crawl.

Classic!

Fantastic little oasis amongst the awful bars surrounding it on West Street!
11 Apr 2008 23:17
Agree with all previous reviews. A veritable haven from the lager-drinkers'/students' paradise a hundred yards away.
5 Feb 2008 15:59
Proper Olde Worlde pub. Hidden away, just off the main West Streep drinking strip. Plenty of real ales, and Schneider Weisse on tap. Definitely worth visiting for a pint or 4!

Reviews by BITE users:

Great pub offering a friendly welcome from staff and customers. An excellent range of real ales, a beer garden and an all-round proper pub: a pub for conversation and relaxation - not gaming machines and competing TVs and music.
2 Jun 2008 08:01
Called at the Wellington last Saturday for the first time under its new name. Remains a premier pub for excellent value and choice of beers - between £1.90 and 2.10 a pint mainly. Noted Jever Pils (imported from Germany) was available on DRAUGHT for £2.80/pint - believe me that's cheap for the UK.

Friendly and humorous staff at the bar make your visit a memorable one, where else can you expect cheap ale and a laugh a minute?

"Scoopers" should note that the range is now a bit more mainstream since the change of ownership, but there's still something for everyone here. The Portmahon brewery is still out of action and the latest estimate is 6 months before it resumes.

Still worthy of its top marking - will spend longer next time!
26 Feb 2008 18:47
Had a great time here on my visit to Sheffield with a wide variety of real ales on the bar. Friendly staff and enjoyed the banter with both staff and customers while enjoying the good quality ales. Always one to visit.

Nice pub, often quite lively. Great range of beers, also a pool table. Shows a lot of sport, but this is fairly unobtrusive if you're not interested. Small snug bar across from the main bar with a bell to attract service.
2 Mar 2008 23:44
Visited on Saturday 12 Jan. Place was heaving with Sheff Utd fans ahead of the game. As a QPR fan the atmosphere was a bit intimidating but the excellent pint of Sheffield Vulcan made up for this. Staff kept the queue moving well so only had a 5 minute wait.

Well worth a visit but perhaps avoid game days if you want a quiet pint
18 Jan 2008 23:13
Visited twice in the same day, Sunday late lunchtime and again early evening. Quiet on both occasions, but decent range of beers and friendly staff. A lot tidier than some city centre pubs, although just a tad on the ordinary side, with any past divisions between bars removed to give one large L-shaped room with a conservatory on the side. Has echoes of an older style in the outside look and some etched windows. Pleasant enough and much more welcoming than others close by.

Reviews by BITE users:

A little dark and looking rather untidy and in need of a facelift. There were five casks - the usual suspects, so a bit of a let down in town known for its range of beers from the smaller, more interesting breweries.

An old man's pub. Pee stains and crisp crumbs.
7 Aug 2008 20:48
Over-rated establishment - usually busy, ale selection is very disappointing - Deuchars, Black Sheep, Banks and Adnams Original I think. Very exciting. Not. Don't bother, walk down to the Dev Cat instead for a selection of guests.
16 Jun 2008 22:14
Fantastic pub, my local when I lived in the area. Far better than anywhere on nearby West Street, the Red Deer has a great choice of real ales and is popular with postgrad students and lecturers from the university. Reasonable food, although service stops early. Excellent themed quizzes on Sunday night.

Decent boozer, usually good selection of lagers and ales. Not the place to go for conversation however - the live music, in such a small place, can put paid to that. Reasonably priced food too.
25 Apr 2008 13:45
Studenty pub, with reasonable live music and OK selection of beer, but not a patch on its heyday ten or fifteen years ago. Nothing too wrong, but nothing out of the ordinary, either.
2 Mar 2008 23:19
Pleasant pub with a nice selection of beers and reasonable live music, although a little on the pricey side.

Excellent beer and very good, but pricey food.Staff are very friendly and helpful.
11 May 2008 20:37
An excellent Pub right by Sheffield FC's ground. On our visit, 5 Thornbridge beers were available, with 3 over 5%, when lighter beers would have been preferred. We did try them all, and all were excellent and very tasty. We did not try the food as it was 'gastro' rather than proper pub food. Full marks to the young, blond girl behind the bar, her knowledge of the beers and enthusiasm was brilliant.
27 Apr 2008 11:30
another great pub in Sheffield. Right next to Sheffield FC, the oldest football club in the world...but dont let that put you off.
superb Thornbridge ales always available...
you wont be disappointed by their outstanding St Petersburg Stout.
comfortably furnished pub with the usual warm friendly Yorkshire greeting...

Reviews by BITE users:

The Uni Arms is totally unexpected - you’re walking down an ugly and noisy ring road with ugly modern buildings, when you bump into this large, sedate and charming Edwardian building. A little faded to be sure, and that adds to the rather splendid old British Empire / Oxbridge atmosphere which is totally at odds with the industrial heritage of Sheffield.

Five casks, two of them Thornbridge. The beer garden is an oasis of green, peace and charm in the wasteland of broken brick, concrete and weeds that makes up the forgotten battlefield of Sheffield. Unexpected and all the more delightful for that.
5 Aug 2008 21:05
Formerly the 197 Club, this is now more obviously open to non-academics and is busier. It has long had a good beer selection, and the pleasant beer garden is now more popular. Also has some under-used function rooms upstairs. The best pub in the area.
19 May 2008 21:12
Great pub. Good beer, friendly staff, pleasant atmosphere. Food's also good. Surely a contender for the Good Beer Guide!

Why don't I live closer to this great pub? I don't remember upsetting anyone in a previous life! It's just not fair.
26 Apr 2008 21:20
A real ale drinkers heaven. Always a great choice of styles and strengths and the Abbeydale beers are excellent. The best choice of lagers from all over the world I've ever seen too.
The food is a bit dull and mushy. The live music used to be more varied and has been reduced to just one night. There used to be a lot more jazz which I liked so I don't make the journey so much now.
However, well worth going for the beer.
1 Apr 2008 11:21
true it's a long way out of city centre, but make the effort and enjoy the Abbeydale beers which are excellent.
good place.

Another visit to Sheffield, and again enjoyed my visit to this pub. It was quiet, and we enjoyed a new Abbeydale beer for us, and a Globe beer. Both excellent. I have eaten here before, and the food was good and reasonably priced.
10 Feb 2008 11:45
excellent beer pub with great value food. as Gillhalfpint reports, good staff and service, great beer selection and condition.
We visited Saturday lunchtime and couldn't believe how quiet it was for a city outskirts pub wth good tram links to the city centre...dont miss it if you're in Sheffield.
Abbeydale beers are usually superb and today was no exception.
4 Feb 2008 12:10
I have started going to this Abbeydale pub while doing a real ale crawl in the area as there are 10 beers on offer, 5 Abbeydale and 5 guests from micro breweries. Tasting notes are shown for each beer and the staff are friendly and know about their beer. They also have a good choice in bottled beers.

Reviews by BITE users:

Old fashioned coach party type of pub. Mildly amusing in a twee retro manner. 10 different cask ale compensate - almost - for the lack of atmosphere or self-awareness. This is like the lounge bar of an old people's home. Or one of those hotels used for cheap holidays. It's all the bad jokes about Northern Working Men's Clubs. Check to see if there's a pair of false teeth in your beer before you drink it!

There's some of the board games you'll find in a Blackpool guest house.

This is just off Kelham Island, but shares their situation of being poorly located.
7 Aug 2008 20:55
excellent large ale pub. quiet on Saturday lunchtime visit......beautiful pints of Bradfield Stout and Farmers Blonde and Nutty Slack Mild 3.9% (recommended).
fine new venue for me, on the now legendary Fat Cat, KIT, Wellington crawl.
25 Jun 2008 10:45
Excellent selection of ales, interesting lagers and the wine's not bad. Quiz on a Wednesday which is great and they currently host the quiz of another pub on Sunday evenings - the pub concerned is still being refurbed after the floods. Welcoming place, a great 'local'.

Pretty much the perfect pub. Fantastic setting, friendly staff and locals. great real ales, chilled white wine (a big plus for my wife).
The seating is comfy and a nice outside area. Newspapers provided.
My current favourite pub.

Depending on your viewpoint you may feel that the Host is somewhat standoffish or you may feel he is a landlord of the old school. I will leave it for others to decide. What I do know is that the beer is excellent and generally a nice selection to choose from. The atmosphere inside and out, is tasteful and convivial. The setting is fantastic being overlooked by the local church. Clientelle are a friendly good humoured bunch. Food when I went - please check this still stands - was lunchtimes only but was very well presented and realistically sized portions. Expect to mingle with students in term time.
14 Apr 2008 14:12
Lovely pub, I just moved down the road and am quite happy having this as one of the locals!

Great range of beer and very well kept. Decor is beaut, spot on example of a Victorian Yorkshire drinking palace. Friendly staff, it's spotless, and the clientele are pleasant. Dunno about the food but the rest of it is pretty good
