Agree with mattbeer, really nice pint but the fella with the glasses on behind the bar was more interested talking to the people who insisted on standing right in the way of people trying to get served. Pub 7/10 Service 4/10.

Great pub, nice ales, very friendly staff, good range of Cains in here and well worth a visit if in the area.
Can get busy, but not uncomfortable.

Fine, bustling and basic ale house, with a nice choice of ales from which I veered happily from the Ossets to the Salopian. For an early Saturday evening it was a little too popular for comfort but that's hardly a criticism, and although the atmosphere was boisterous it was above all very friendly and congenial. Striking up conversations at random seemed the most natural thing in the world with this sociable lot. Plus the service benefits by employing one of the most full-on cheerful barmaids I've ever encountered. Definitely on the list of must re-visits.

I met some friends in here early evening yesterday prior to going to a concert.
The full range of Cains beers was available. However, I opted for the guest ale, the name of which escapes me but it was from Caerphilly. It was a light refreshing pint. Not impressed with the price though - over £3.
Very few customers but then it was a cold Monday evening in January.

Classy, superb beer, clean, tidy but atmospheric enough. A pleasure to drink in

Sounds like the last reviewer ought to be in a morgue- I too am anti-British confrontational pub system in which the strongest wins, but that is the sad state of affairs for the consumer in this country- we're all too cowardly to complain except on anonymous websites! hahahah!!!! This pub is simply one of Britain's most beautiful, and CAINS beers are some of the most imaginative and flavoursome in Britain- that's enough to be happy with- in winter the views from this pub are simply wonderful- Liverpool should be proud. Yes, its run by kids- but thats' Britain. It's lively and for goodness sakes, don't rue that!

Popped in the Baltic last week for the first time in a while last Wednesday. I had a wonderful Pint of Summer Ale & a bowl of Scouse which was lovely. I noticed they done a bit of work to the pub by covering up the old toilets to allow more space which worked well as there was an open mic night due to start.
Cant really fault the pub whatsoever, my food & pint was lovely, lovely looking barmaid behind the bar and some nice regulars who are very friendly but also very very talkative!!!
Overall its still one of the Best Pubs in Liverpool in my opinion.

If the Summer Ale is a reliable indicator than the Wapping product brewed at this stand alone boozer is worth seeking out. It was delightful and refreshing after a walk around the Docks in the stiff Mersey breeze. However I found the pub rather moody for a late Friday afternoon, not helped by keeping most of the lights off as the pub sailed into dusk. Perhaps I caught it at the wrong time. I didn't appreciate the lads effing and blinding in a smug fashion at the bar either. Might try again but only for the beer.

Called in last Thursday for a superb pint of their session bitter. Second visit in as many weeks. Not sure if the owner is still Simon but I used to work with his other half when I lived in Liverpool.

Still a superb pub, an oasis in an area which is fast becoming a builders paradise.

Used this place for years and at one time they served the best pint of Cains in town but like always with Wetherspoons they soon took that off! They can’t seem to leave things alone sometimes.

Staff are usually friendly but very often not enough of them; Friday lunches, 2 staff serving 10 or 12 punter!
Lately the range of beers has been poor. The other week 8 handpulls but only 3 beers on. Not good enough frankly and sometimes I just turn around and walk out.
With just a bit more care this place could be improved.

Have to say that this is a great wetherspoons the staff are friendly and there are quite a few characters in here . Have drank in here for many years and have never really had any problems.

I met a mate in here at 7:30 last night prior to going to the Birkenhead Beer Festival at Pacific Road Arts Centre.
The pub was crowded with punters of all ages and was lively and noisy.
There appeared to be a small Wetherspoons beer festival taking place, however most of the brews were 'sold out' or 'coming soon'.
I was forced to have a pint of Greene King Abbot Ale. I was pleasantly surprised, it was a well presented, nice pint.
Nice to see that this pub is thriving.

Good quality upgrade of what was a rather knackered old John Smith's pub, retaining it's public bar. Local beers in good nick, friendly landlord and sensible pricing all add up to a must visit establishment - a much needed freehouse for the area and an escape from the lunacy of £4 a pint at the Oxton Bar & Second Mortgage
2 Feb 2011 17:08
Now re-opened as the "Cock & Pullet". A much needed refurbishment has taken place to drag it into the 21st century. 4 handpumps on my visit - Fuller's ESB, Spitfire, Brimstage Trapper's Hat & Liverpool Organic Brewery Bitter. "Happy Hour" 4pm-6.30pm - cask beers £2 a pint
14 Jan 2011 07:44
Closed. Not sure what the future plans are but I've heard it will open again after a refurb.

Yup, ECLKWRIG, the recent Guest Cains was just undrinkable. (I thought that was just Cains as I am not a fan and confuse it with Jeyes) Yup, the Guests do taste a blander version of their full selves. Yup, supercat, it did look a bit pre-smoking ban, schabby chic over done, but it just had new decor and new flooring. Fair criticism. I like the "proletariat character", me and it still has that.

Grand building, both inside and out, opposite the railway station. The beer selection consisted of Caledonian Autumn Red, Cains Bitter and Tetley Dark. Tetley Mild and Greene King IPA were both off. There are a few separate drinking areas, which lend the place plenty of character. Multiple TVs were showing live football and most people were in to watch it. Tokens from behind the bar are needed to exit the car park. A pleasant building. But it may have seen better days.

I was in here last weekend, and I'm with alanhealey. The place was busy, because of the Rugby League grand final, but service was as quick as could be expected, staff and clientele friendly and the Cains bitter enjoyably drinkable all evening. I haven't been in before, and don't come from the area, so I don't know whether it's better or worse than it was, but it seemed fine to me.
