I returned to Winchester and found The Black Boy was my favourite new pub of the day. It doesn't quite match my visit to the Hyde Tavern a few years back. But The Black Boy is almost as good. It has low beamed ceilings with lots of little rooms and all sorts of paraphernalia, including upside down Christmas trees hanging from the ceiling and stuffed warthogs. There was a table football table in the room I sat in and there was also an impressive outdoor courtyard. Situated just out of town, it is near a pleasant weir on the River Itchen. Customers were mainly couples and families. For some reason I was expecting more ales. But I was surprised to see an American cask ale - Napa Smith Pale Ale. They also had Bowman Swift One & Cardinal, Flowerpots Bitter & Hopback Summer Lightning. Ciders all appeared to be from Lilleys - Mango Cider & Sunset on handpull and 3 others on keg. This place is well worth a visit.

A good solid pub, plenty of well kept ales worth the short trek out from the centre.

This is certainly one of the best pubs in Hampshire, 'said by one who has visited more than a few'.
The beer was in outstanding condition, we had the Alton & the Good Old Boy, two other real ales were also on offer.
The food was excellent, my roast beef was under a tenner & the roast potatoes were some of the best I have ever tasted.
From the moment you step through the door you get a warm welcome. Lovely old pub, open fires & a great atmosphere, it is certainly my type of place.

Rating. It's got to be at least a 9

Very well kept beer here at this unprepossessing country pub, I had a few pints of Brains Reverend James which was very well kept and a joy to behold! Superb food, good menu, friendly staff, piping hot food and big portions, but good value. Popular with locals and visitors alike - well established campground to the rear, well worth a visit for both beer and food, superb!

Where have all the review(er)s on this site gone??
This pub is still very welcoming, were with a party of 11 - after a beautiful walk along the canal and over the Downs. I had the Fox and Goose Ale - not sure which brewery (Ringwood?) 3.6% but very acceptable. Doom Bar and Courage Directors also on tap. Food excellent and reasonably priced - great way to finish the walk.

Small centuries old pub in the centre of town. Most customers appeared to be taking advantage of the summer weather. Those inside all seemed to know one another. A few had been to the game at Southampton. I kept a reasonably low profile, given the result. Some of the language was a little choice. Staff were nice enough. Ales were Longman American Pale Ale, Butcombe Bitter, Sharps Doom Bar & Timothy Taylor Landlord. They were being dispensed in glass but were not the cheapest.

A decent pint of HSB as always in here, lots of wine for the ladies too.
You enter through beautiful curved wood/glass doors, and find a world of tweed jackets and usually well healed ale drinkers within.
Food is served and a large portion of the pub set aside as such, but the casual drinker is always welcomed in my experience though on rare occasions the place is overrun with loudly braying Tarquin types for reasons unknown to me.
Slightly off the beaten track near the cathedral, on leaving it's usual to bump into some confused sort who has been trying to find the pub for the last hour or so...

The Wykeham Arms was my final Winchester pub and it's a nice Fullers pub near one of the city gates and the college, whilst being not too far from the castle. This is a very nice area of Winchester. It was very busy on my Saturday evening visit. Most people were drinking in the L-shaped bar. But there were also 2 more formal dining areas and an outdoor area I did not venture too. Standing at the bar felt a little uncomfortable. This doesn't seemed to be the done thing. I was asked twice if I needed serving, when I already had a drink in front of me. Another pub that is popular with the more well-heeled residents of Winchester. Ales were Gales HSB & Seafarers & Fullers Oliver's Island & London Pride. Unusually for a Fullers pub, they also stock a non-Fullers ale - Flower Pots Goodens Gold.

It certainly is a great pub, atmospheric, relaxed with the full Fullers range and some guests. Always well kept. Prices are high however, even for Winchester. Paid £10.70 for a pint of Goodens Gold, a G & T and a bag of crisps.

A nice range of draught of beers, ten at least, always new ones coming in.

Had a great Sunday roast here and it looks like so many people did here also in the family eating area. Shame about the loud mouths who were drinking heavily and swearing. Tis a family pub where children are allowed.

A fairly typical Wetherspoons, as you'd expect there is a decent list of ever changing guest ales. Not much on the tv front, tends to just show the news with subitles, not sure why that is necessary as they don't have music here anyway.

Reviews by BITE users:

Pubs are rarely in pristine condition in terms of furnishings, but I noticed the carpet was unusually worn and the walls dirty when my mate and I went in there last night. Towards the end of the evening, I heard a man saying “F this” and “F that”. I didn’t like to turn round and stare as I’m quite happy with my face the way it currently is, so I asked my mate what was going on. He said the landlord was just abusing his staff and appeared to be completely wasted. When we left, the landlord and landlady were sat on our side of the bar, and the custom when you leave is the staff say good night and thank you. The barmaid did, but the landlord and landlady said nothing. Sad to see this once nice, quiet boozer has gone quite a way downhill.

Nice to see Kev and fat Dee don't run it anymore. They were terrible for its reputation

6x from the wood removed from sale! Why? Surely this isn't a brewery decision!
