Tucked away in a residential area with a good range of beers on offer, this traditional pub has the makings of a superb backstreet boozer. Yet I visited with a couple of friends at peak time, and at 9.30pm on a Saturday there were literally four other people in there. Heads turned as we walked through the door, and an eerie silence fell as the people in there sized us up. Yes, we got a decent pint but for the first few minutes we all felt really quite uncomfortable until we'd been served and sloped off to a corner to sit down. Not sure what has happened to the "huge local following" mentioned below - the Queen's Head looks to have had a makeover a few doors up, so perhaps they've all defected there. Shame because with a bit more life and a few more punters this place could be a belter.

A real 'destination' pub - head for it,and stay as long as you can because there is a lot of good beer here.

cracking pub this, great traditional & locally sourced pub food, (must try the sausage egg & chips)
great beer for everyones taste including at least 5 or 6 guest beers from all over the country.
outstanding local people that go in there, if you want a good laugh, frienly, and welcoming atmosphere, no where better.
and to cap it off a great landlord (the governor).
also if you like your cricket its about 5 mins from the county ground and sometimes the players pop in after the game for a drink or two. p. s. it also has a dartboard

Waited 1 1/2 hours for main to be served and it was freezing cold. Ordered a sea food dish which only had prawns in! Husband ordered rare - medium steak and was WELL done. Total party of 15 and only one person was happy with the food. Would never recommend to anyone!

Visited the Duke of Wellington last weekend, and really enjoyed our visit. They had some lovely beers available, I tried the Old Speckled Hen and a pint of the extra mild. We enjoyed two lovely pork roasts, and retired to the garden for drinks and sun! I must say I do not agree with the comments below, its the best roast I've had for a while, the meat was cooked perfectly, and we think the food was fantastic value for money. (and crackling is always a bonus!)
Also baring in mind this is a BEER site not food site. It was also nice to see the management had a cask marque and 100% certificate for their Guinness. Very good job. 10/10

Smartly refurbished pub. Eight real ales on offer, although with two banks of eight handpumps they could increase to as many as sixteen if demand and cellar space are sufficient. Efficient service from a friendly barmaid.

Only real criticism is there are too many tables and chairs. I was in late afternoon when it was fairly quiet, but somehow felt a bit cluttered and if every table and chair was occupied you'd barely be able to move around.

No longer Original. Obviously the recession has made Nicholsons reduce their signwriting, it's now just The Plough. Not yet been in there since the takeover.

Nicholsons have refurbished this quite recently, and the result is a depressingly familiar chain pub with neutral decor throughout and Sky Sports News playing in the corner with the volume down. Great range of ales though, which would be enough to get me through the door a second time.

Good choice of local ales, but felt like a pub without much character. One end is dominated by a large widescreen TV, the other side has a pool table, jukebox and quiz machine. You'd really struggle to find a corner to get comfortable and enjoy a quiet drink. Also the lighting was very bright throughout which didn't help to create much of an atmosphere. Worth calling in, but certainly not a place I would want to settle at for the night.

Found this pub on a gray, rainy day, tucked away from the crowds. Had a couple of very good pints of Bombardier and the Missus had a couple of equally good pints of London Pride. I found it comfortable, hospitable and an all round pleasant place to relax on a Sunday afternoon. Perfect!

Friendly, relaxed local with a very warm welcome and efficient service. Four cask ales were available on my Wednesday evening visit. The much-maligned Greene King IPA was amongst those on offer. I tried it and went back for more and more! It was delicious and tasty - a credit to the cellarmanship at this pub. Definitely worth a visit.

I'm not sure when previous posters went to the Two Brewers but me and my friends drink and eat in here regularly and have never had a bad meal or anything but good treatment from the staff. The food is always good, especially the carvery and we love the atmosphere. I recommend it to anyone in Chelmsford wanting a chilled out old fashioned pub

Although this pub has been renovated by the new management the overall atmosphere is uncomfortable and rude. The staff while outwardly friendly are plainly not happy in their work. I overheard arguement between barstaff over who would serve which table and several rude comments about customers! The food was acceptable, but only just so. Overall I would not recommend this establishment to anyone.

Tried this pub again the other day, and sorry, but it's still rubbish. Why can't they provide a couple of decent real ales on tap, or even a decent lager for that matter? There was a gang of stiff necked working-class androids standing at (in fact hogging) the small bar area. I was definitely given the cold shoulder, although the barman was friendly, and well he might be having just pocketed over 3.50 for a bottled lager that would have cost about 70p in the Tescos over the road.

The place has had a bit of a ponced up re-fit, but it really is still lagging well behind many other similar pubs in Chelmsford in terms of the range of drink and the atmosphere.

I am keeping my rating at 5.

I've been to this new restaurant 3 times since it's reopened and found the service to have been excellent 2 out of 3, (not bad considering all new staff).
However my last visit last for Sunday roast which I have to say was really pretty poor. Cold plates so cold food. But the worst thing was that the quality was below standard and more bought in than home cooked. Sunday roast is the benchmark of a good restaurant and it's essential to get it right.

Recently visited The Hare and have to say I cant agree with the last review. I found the staff to be very pleasent and the service we received even though the pub was really busy was excellent. The food was lovely and it was nice to go to a pub that isnt like all the usual "chain" pubs. Having visited the pub prior to its revamp, it sorely needed the new life that has been put into it by its new owners. I personally will be recommending this pub to all the people I know - and have booked the family in for Christmas day!

Very disappointed with my visit. Food is okay but very overpriced. The service was awful and the staff were rude. A nice country pub sadly now spolit. A real shame.
