Met up with a friend last Sunday who had travelled from London.. the place is handy for the Rail Station.

Tiger as good as usual but 280p a pint a bit expensive..my friend had the Oyster stout which seemed to be popular that lunchtime..

Food is back on Sunday Lunchtimes although we didnt eat.

The guy behind the bar with the scruffy hair and tie die shirt knows his beers and lets you try before you buy..

Certainly improved since the last time I was there but again the tiolets..!

Clarks Feel the Pinch, Cropton Honey Gold & Scoresby Stout, Crouch Vale Amarillo, Black Sheep Bitter, Nethergate Umbel, a.n.other, plus Cassels cider. Good barman took time out from attending to a group of ditherers to serve me a pint. A serious alehead on the bar, presumably the guv, was talking staff thru pump changes. Special beer glasses suggest this place is belgian friendly. I know this manc feels at home here.

Traditional Victorian local with eight hand pumps. Seven ales always including a dark beer and a real cider. Noticed that the local Pot Belly Brewery was being well supported here with Inner Daze and Welland Truly. Local Oakham Inferno as well but chose to drink the Mighty Oak Mersey Mild.

Reviews by BITE users:

We enjoyed our recent visit to The Elm Tree. A great selection of ale on the ten hand pumps. Met Rob the new landlord who I had previously chatted to on the BITE FORUMS. Rob told me about Banks and Taylor’s approaching him when he was at The Hobgoblin in Reading. Wells and Young’s still own the pub but B&T now own the lease. The only condition that Rob has is that he has to stock three B&T beers and also three Wells and Young’s beers. The other four hand pumps are constantly changing. He always tries to make one of those a dark ale. The pub also stocks a number of continental beers and had some rare American beers in the fridge. The two bar maids seemed a good laugh and the other customers were friendly.

Cracking range of real ale. New landlord has come from the Hobgoblin in Reading apparently so knows his ale. Seemed a friendly pub where people go to enjoy good beer and have a chat.

Upon recommendation, I called in here after falling out of the Cambridge Beer Festival a couple of weeks ago.
With due respect to Bunter, this pub is just what Cambridge needs - another proper real ale outlet within 500yds of the city centre!
And open all day!

I paid a visit the other week and was impressed with the choice of ales and the staffs friendliness.Sat in the garden with my dog which you cant do at the Let and live.

Top notch ale - although if you order one of the Gravity served ales your server may have to disappear for a while!! Can get busy - but hey that's a sign that they are doing it right! Food looked quality too although did not sample it myself. Usually local brewers are well represented (Milton, City of Cambridge..and some of the Miltons are strong stuff!) and it is in Cambridges "Purple Patch" for Real Ale pubs if you want to make a crawl of it.

Wonderful pub; a real ale exhibition that rivals the Wellington but based in the community. Terry and Jethro's other pub, the Carlton Rams, is still brilliant as well.

First visit Saturday good selection of ales and sampled some others.Bit pricey for beer at 300p a pint..carpets could do with a clean .. went on the computer for a while.
Bit soulless at lunch time and the barman is he Polish I could not decipher his accent.
Not too impressed I think the Cambridge Blue is better.Still the computer was free which is worth it if you have just the one drink.
27 May 2008 14:30
Deservedly in the "Guide" 10 ales on and a nice warm fire on a cold March Saturday! Plenty of competition nearby but stands up well!.
14 May 2008 14:15
Whenever I'm in Cambridge I make a point of ending the visit here. It's quite close to the railway station (about an 8 minute walk). The Summer Lightning, Entire Stout, and Brewer's Gold were all excellent and served in branded glasses. Expect to see Oakham Ales and Newby Wyke also.

I totally agree with edchambers 330p is a shocking price for a pint of Broadside.I also went to the Regal in Cambridge and had a pint of Augustinians from the Nethergate brewery down the road at Clare in Suffolk and paid 205p for a decent beer.Right it is the biggest JDW pub in England and they sell cheap beer but I am agast at the atitude of these people who seem to think they can charge 330p for a pint of beer .One to avoid .
28 Jul 2008 10:44
Always a favourite when I visit Cambridge, but on this occasion I was shocked to be charged £3.30 for a pint of Broadside. £3.30!! On the previous day I paid just 69p more for a very good bottle of South African shiraz (admittedly on special offer) at my local Sainsbury's. It's being said more and more- no wonder people are turning to the supermarket for their booze. People bleat on about Labour adding 4p a pint in duty in their last budget making price rises inevtable etc etc but the fact is that on the same visit to Cambridge I bought a pint of Old Empire, 5.7% premium ale, at Wetherspoons for £2.05. Presumably Wetherspoons are making approfit on this, and when you consider that they have to buy in their beern from a middleman whereas The Castle is serving beer from Adnams' own brewery you begin to see that the strategy seems to be to turn their backs on people who actually care about the price of their pint. Enough to say, I'd never stay here for more than one drink.
9 Jul 2008 22:05
Good range of beer, several from Adnams but also a range of guest ale. Pleasant pub with beer garden out the back - definitely has that Adnams feel about it. Also does good food

Reviews by BITE users:

From the outside looks very neglected and decayed- two large blackboards either side of the entrance doors are blank, suggesting a pub with no future. Once inside it's a very different picture, there's a cosy single bar with every surface festooned with various posters; pig ephemera and rows of beer bottles add to the ambience. Lunch menu is basic but appealing, sandwiches and burgers with nothing costing more than £4 or so. 4 real ales on offer- I ordered the broadside but it was off, so I went for the London Pride. This turned out to be the best pint of Pride I've ever tasted; normally I'm not a great fan of this beer, finding it too astringent, I tend to end up with it when the broadside (or ESB) is unavailable, but this particular pint was great. This pub was in CAMRA's 2007 Good Beer Guide, but not the 2008 one; hopefully will reappear ther in future, especially if they work on the exterior
9 Jul 2008 21:50
Looks a little run down from outside but inside is full of character (wooden floors and lots of pig and music related memorabilia) serves good real ale and what looked like reasonably priced food. Beer garden and pool room out the back. Definitely a good stop on the way to/from the station.
1 Jul 2008 20:26
Our first pub yesterday on our real ale crawl around the city. This was in the 2007 GBG but not in the current guide so we wanted to check on it. The pub certainly has character with many pig related themes. Pig's on the hand pulls and on the ceiling and even an animated pig that drinks on the bar. Four hand pumped ales; Adnams Broadside, The Bitter, Explorer and Black Sheep. We all had pints of Black Sheep which all came in branded glasses. The food on offer seemed pretty reasonably priced and popular among the other customers. A pool table was available towards the rear of the pub. Much outside seating in the rear court yard. It was good quality beer and a good start to the day.

Friendly GK pub with a true guest. The staff were keen and knowledgable about ale and pubs in the area.
1 Jul 2008 20:40
A surprisingly good G/K traditional pub. Knowledgeable and passionate landlord and barman. Good to hear that they turned down a G/K refurb offered to them. The interior is great and looks original. IPA, Abbott, Alefresco and a genuine guest of Brains Reverend James. We were advised that they always serve genuine guest ale. Many of the previous guest clips are showing around the bar area. They certainly had a lot of local knowledge on the other pubs. A worthy regular in the GBG and certainly one to recommend.
29 Jun 2008 02:26
Very nice find although a little small. Friendly landord who gave very good tips on what pub to head for next for decent ale choice. Visited saturday evening and had a well kept pint of fireside and some free cheese.
A very good choiuce if you are around the king street area of town.

Small traditional pub just up the road from The Champion. On a busy Friday night when it is fairly full inside everyone spills out on the street. Like previous comment I also strangely enough spoke to Paul Crush of the Milton Brewery. A pleasant and sociable chap who likes drinking his beer from this pub. Three ales here although four hand pumps. Milton Sackcloth and Daedalus with London Pride available. A friendly pub but I wonder if it is as popular when the weather is not so nice.
2 Jul 2008 15:29
Good old fashioned boozer! Lots of ale including several local ones. Was busy on the Friday afternoon I visited and people had spilt onto the street and were enjoying each others' company. I got chatting to a bloke about the quality of the beer and it turned out to be the bloke who brews the beer at Milton Brewery - it seems he likes the way they serve his beer too!
1 Jul 2008 20:47
A new pub to me and what a fine pub. Located a minute from the Grafton center. A very good selection of ales including 3 from the Milton brewey and some dubious looking cider. I tried the milton sack cloth which was OK but I am not really a fan of Milton ales.
Bar staff very friendly and welcoming.

A day watching cricket at Fenner's followed by a few superb pints of ale and good conversation in this truly outstanding pub - what more can life offer?
13 Jun 2008 15:59
Forgot to say....beer served in oversized glasses with half/pint lines on...and the liquid was above the line!....a first in my experience....wonderful!
8 Mar 2008 18:36
Excellent pint of GK XX mild and Old Hooky (bright and fruity). Staff extremely friendly and helpful, told us where the 'snug' was where seating was available (rest of pub comfortably busy @ 18:30 on a Friday evening). A proper pub! Cheery conversations from a good mix of people.

Old multi-roomed pub right next to bridge over Cam. Two banks of handpumps serving same beers front & rear bar; Woodforde Nelson's Revenge & Headcracker(7%), Oakham Inferno, Salem January Sale. Quite studenty but good homely feel. Not crowded on our early evening visit, one wonders how these houses survive outside term-time.
28 Jan 2008 12:28
This is a great pub, and they always have Old Peculier on draught and on form!
26 Jan 2008 13:26
Lovely little pub with an interesting internal layout. Fabulous selection ( eight at least ?? ) of real ales. Went in earlier this week on a cold, wet evening, and the lovely smile of the dark haired barmaid warmed me up a treat.

Reviews by BITE users:

Certainly one of the better places to get a beer in Cambridge. Plenty of history, and a nice feel to the place inside.

Couple of drawbacks:

1) Greedy King beer. So bland, so lifeless, so ubiquitous in Cambridge.

2) Not much room a lot of the time. But that's just the way it is - a victim of its own success.

Although it's very close to the corn exchange, so good for pre-gig pint (assuming you can get to the bar).

Worth a visit for the history value.
31 May 2008 12:50
So many tourists in one little pub. Small courtyard with tables and no chance of a seat let alone a drink from the bar.
12 May 2008 12:01
Its a Greene King pub full of tourists in the middle of Cambridge worth stopping for a pint sitting in the courtyard but no big deal.Still its much better than the pub next door now that is bad.

Reviews by BITE users:

This is a pub I will never visit again. A friend and I were sitting there quietly, when (simultaneously) pints of beer were poured over our heads by a group of a dozen "yoofs" (possibly young soldiers out of uniform). As we tried to leave they beat us up outside and left us bleeding in the street, me with a broken nose and two black eyes, he with broken specs and two black eyes. And lots of kicks. Why? We don't know. "Gay-basing"? Neither of our wives believe it. "Graddy-bashing"? Possibly. The landlord saw nothing, at least when asked by the police. I didn't think it was that bad until then. However, Cambridge has always had its share of mindless violence in pubs.

Pleasant pub with food and a full range of well kept Everards beers plus a guest (Jennings on my visit). Liked this pub a lot.
1 Jul 2008 21:08
A traditional Everards pub completely opposite the Castle Inn. Five hand pumps available; Everards Sunchaser, Tiger, Beacon & Original with Jennings Cocker Hoop as a guest. All the beers we tasted were in good form which covered 3 of the pumps. Looks like you were very unlucky on your visit Trainman. I did not take a note on the prices but it was one of the more expensive of the day. The pub was rather quiet for early Friday evening which left us to have a chat with the friendly landlady. A TV was available in the lounge where there was a big fire place.

Reviews by BITE users:

Traditional Wells & Young’s pub with eight hand pumped ales. Always serves Eagle and Bombardier and usually one other. There was still quite a selection of five genuine guest ales. There is an unusual hanging cyclist with a dummy onboard hanging from the ceiling. Another dummy appears to be working at a table up stairs on a balcony area.
3 Jul 2008 00:14
Good range of ale, including beers from: Charles Wells, Adnams, Mauldons, Hydes, Jennings and St Austells on my visit. Lots of memorabilia decorating the interior. Unfortunately couldn't stay as long as I'd have liked due to train times.
1 Jul 2008 21:20
Excellent pub. We were drinking the wonderful "Brewers Gold" until it ran out and whatever we had after was good too - an excellent choice of beers.
Friendly staff and an outside area that was unusually comfortable. Strongly recommended.

Looked like it has been converted from a 1960s style multi-story car park from the outside. Went in to five five hand-pumps with a range of beer - unfortunately (as Love Real Ale states) none of them were available! Looked to be food orientated.
1 Jul 2008 20:38
Oh dear 5 hand pumps and all the clips turned round. Bad management on a Friday afternoon to have no beer available. Surely you should be geared up for the weekend at this point. The pub looked more like a restaurant from the outside.
29 Jun 2008 01:54
The PUB QUIZ at the Bun Shop is BRILLIANT - every Wed evening - started 8.30pm. £1 per player I think it was, we had 4 in our team. Max of 5 per team. Nice bottle of wine as a prize when we played - yeah, we won! (there weren't many other teams that night, though they had just got started!) I think you get a pitcher of beer if you're second. It's upstairs, which is nice, and the host was gorgeous! lol Not sure if that was intended as an incentive!

Not so inspiring pub next to the river in Cambridge.
Too busy for me. Some ales on but nothing notable.

The stuff about Pink Floyd is a bag o'shite....

Waters and Barrett attended Cambridge High School for Boys (later Hills Rd 6th Form), as did I, and met there, also knowing Gilmour from the next school down the same road

The other two members of Pink Floyd are not from Cambridge at at all

When I was at Hills Rd I used to drink in the Eagle. Does this mean that when I'm rich and famous, that pub will erect a plaque saying it was instrumental in my fame? ;-)
22 Feb 2008 20:39
A tourist pub with no regulars and you get harassed as you walk in by students trying to interest you in hiring a punt.Pink Floyd met up here apparently and theres a board on the wall on the left as you enter announcing this.. I ended up taking a photo for a couple who had come from Peru just to stand in front of it.
Not a real ale pub but they do Abbot and another beer and you sit back on the leather sofa and read the Times or Telegraph and look intelligent.
It alright for a pint but thats all.
