In a league of it's own, great ales from a lovely brewery it's just a shame the space is limited. And sometimes if you frequent it in the daytime you can be greeted with unfriendly regulars, this is worth facing though.

Still amazing. The best pub in the city, and light years ahead of the rest when it comes to the selection and quality of the beers on offer. Does get incredibly busy, so don't expect to get a seat.

Fully justifies its reputation as a beer-drinkers destination pub which people travel miles to visit. Big range of Dark Star beers (including an excellent Sussex stout) plus others from smaller Sussex breweries. First class.

every now and then you come across a pub that, for whatever reason, is a joy to drink in. the Wellington arms in Bedford is one... and the Basketmakers, Brighton is another. Admitedly, we all have our favorite beer or brewer and neither of mine are available here... however the ales that are available are superbly kept and the pub has the turnover to ensure that you never get a bad pint. The food is excellent and complements the atmosphere perfectly. At risk of sounding dry this is a proper pub for proper people. Quite refreshing in a town...sorry City! of Über cool restaurants and bars!

I love this pub. Can't wait till the next conference when I get to go down to Brighton...

Mostly Fullers beer, but a couple of guests at well (including a decent Butcombe Bitter). Staff efficient (but too busy to be friendly). Overall, justifiably popular.

Quirky sort of pub with good Harveys beer. Loved the Porter , but didn't love the stench of Piss the Pub Eminated.
9 Mar 2009 16:04
Excellent Harveys pub, with rarer brews including the Old, Lewes Brown and an excellent Porter. Efficient service, and the food looked good too. Bit of an odd covered area at the back, but overall: top of the range.
21 Feb 2009 22:04
Classic pub - nice pint of Harveys - friendly staff - Mini Cheddars - what else could anyone want?

Brilliant Quiz, not too hard but challenging and especially fun in a town awash with lame quiz nights. Food is tasty and simple, just what I like from this kinda place. Friendly staff serving good drink at great prices. cheap guinness, and it warms my heart to be in an atmosphere where everyone is smiling.

tip top.

Nice enough, but done up in that slightly over the top "Irish Pub" way, like an Irish Pub for tourists!
But it does have a great feel to it, very friendly, and a nice pint.

7/10.

back again, this place has a great facelift via just the reorganisation of seating it seems! same management and staff, very friendly and chatty. Drinks selection has gotten even better with harvey's on cask (not sure when this happened but assured it's on all the time now)

Food is good and well priced and the toilets have been snazzed up since I was last here - and saw a great duo playing when we were there on weds. all round one of the best pubs in brighton

I don't know what this pub was like before it was taken over but I've heard it's completely different now. The pub is a really great place to spend an evening with friends. The downstairs is a fair size with big tables for large groups of friends to fit round (ideal for students!). There is a pool table at one end and on the night I went there was an evening of music provided by a mixtape affair. Great tunes, each one better than the last. The guys running this place have created a really relaxed chilled out place with a fun vibe. Getting there is easy too as the bus stop is literally straight outside the door (staggering distance!).
The menu is good quality and value for money.
In the summer the beer garden will be amazing as its massive and is currently being smartened up. This is a pub that I will be going back to!

A really friendly pub, great place to spend the evening. It's so much better than it was. Good food, and cool music, definitely something different for the area. I went to their monthly Saturday gig amixtapeaffair fab indie music - I think it's a monthly thing. Will be back to check oout the beer garden in June.

This pub is the benchmark that all pubs should aspire to. Exceptional ale, great food at a fair price, lovely atmosphere and very friendly staff.

This pub was doing a roaring trade when I stopped in for some much needed refreshment earlier this week and it's easy to see why.
Set in a wonderful old building on a busy intersection in the popular 'Lanes' area of Brighton, there is an endless stream of potential customers constantly passing by their door. The pub offers a warm and clean environment and the staff were very friendly and exceptionally helpful.
There was a decent selection of ales on tap and I couldn't resist trying the Harveys, which was in good condition. They also had a scrumpy on the pumps.
Although I didn't eat, the food looked very nice and seemed fairly well priced given their location. I guess the main drawback would be that the location lends itself to overcrowding and the aforementioned stag/hen parties, but I was fortunate enough to avoid such goings on!
18 Mar 2009 00:42
This is an excelent pub. I've visited twice on recent visits to Brighton and find the staff charming, welcoming and try hard to please. The beer is excellent, particulalrly the Harveys and the food top nothch. This is a template for all pubs and many of them (including the Golden Fleece, London, E12 and the Crown and Anchor, Findhorn, Scotland) could learn from, in terms of atmosphere, hygienic surroundings, top quality food and drink and happy friendly staff

Now winter has gone and the fire is no longer needed this place is great. Get there early to get a seat, only problem is limited seating but if you get one it's lovely.
13 Apr 2009 00:11
now it's been redone as Foundry it has alovley relaxing atmosphere, open fire that kept us more than entertained with its smoke-producing properties and bless the bar staff who did their best to keep it going! good comfy chairs and nice beer. It's a great place to bring visitors to.
17 Feb 2009 21:23
Great find (yep, it is now called The Foundry). Popped in early afternoon yesterday after some post Christmas shopping and was pleasantly surprised.
Very friendly barman, good selection of real ales well kept and some tasty pizzas too. Also good tunes on the stereo!
Had a very relaxing drink and pizza and couldn't fault the place.
Will look forward to revisiting one evening when I can sample more of teh ales on offer and soak in the atmosphere.

Went to this pub for the 1st time last night, delighted to find six real ales and a quiz.Four of the ales were local and the Hepworths Iron Horse was 1st class. This pub is in the Good Beer Guide 2009 and rightly so,will be going back again.
13 Mar 2009 08:23
Went to this lovely establishment for the first time last night. I've been to nearly all of the 300+ pubs in Brighton now and this is definitely one of my favourites. In fact it's the only pub I've been to that has a genuine, really traditional tatty furniture and log-fire feel in Brighton (so many places try to recreate this artificially). An excellent selection of local real ales from Arundel and Harveys. The food looked lovely, as did the large outside seating area; I'll be back to try both in the summer. Certainly didn't notice any problem with urinal smells, even in the urinals! 8/10 (and that's probably being a bit mean).

smells like toilets. food is very poor- very disappointed after hearing good things about this pub. I will not go back.

This is a good local in an area without a lot of choice. The ale can be too cold sometimes and they need more bar staff at busy times but they do usually have good interesting guest ales on as well as Harveys. The pub has a nice feel to it - apart from when local idiots are in the place (normally Fridays).
4 Oct 2008 16:30
One of the better pubs in the area, staff can be trying, but they do try I suppose. Slowly getting back into shape. Nice beers, food is ok-good. Can make for a pleasent evening. Breakfast is worth a try....strangely excellent value £5???
15 Sep 2008 19:09
fair play, the park view goes all right for a good quiet beer in a sip of a shy whim. bar staff could do with a jolly good roger to cheer the poor chaps up a sconce, but the space is well and good for what it is.

there's a lot of bad press about the food here. i thought it was alright - nothing bad afoot in my eyes, or stomach for that matter. might just be lucky timing on my behalf or unlucky on theirs.

jolly good show chaps - keep up the good work.

Went to the West Quay last friday for some food before going to the cinema. I work in the Pub Trade myself, and I have to say that at half 7 at night i was amazed by the cleanliness, standards and quality of the food that a WETHERSPOONS was offering!!! Not often you see a clean wetherspoons at that time on a friday night!! Food was of a good quality - they have definately improved their food suppliers!! Only small complaint was the selection of Real Ales, but they have a beer festival on from next week anyway so im not too disappointed!!!!
7 Apr 2009 13:35
Very pleasant Wetherspoons. On a Thursday lunchtime, sat indoors in the sun overlooking the marina with a perfectly served pint of Pedigree. Usual food menu and our order arrived promptly. Varied clientele made this a lovely surprise.
23 Mar 2009 18:23
As other reviews have suggested, this pub is something of a mixed bag, owing to its sheer size and the scale of its daily trade. This place may be busy at any time of day & week, and employs a lot of people, with some turnover of staff and of course employees from a number of nations, so do expect a variety of styles of service! My recent experiences have been *very* prompt service, in fact, and only one miserable sod having a bad day at the bar. The drinks offer huge variety & value, the food is good value, but if you eat outside the exposure to sea breezes means that it will go cold very quickly.

I hate to let you into a secret, but upstairs is much nicer than downstairs. Don't spread it around... We really enjoy it here.

Now up for sale by the brewery.
They've no longer got any interest in it.
No great surprise.
In the pesent climate - it could be end of a pub on this site.
19 Feb 2009 11:55
Went in on a Saturday night in January and we were the only people in there apart from the barlady and her friend. Can't believe this pub has gone downhill so much.
Dark, dirty (I was told the bins in the ladies were full past the brim), cold, and the first view upon entering was some garden furniture shoved behind the door. Felt more like drinking in a squat, and the poor goldfish in their dirty tanks are unlikely to be around for much longer either. Shocking

Reviews by BITE users:

Take a pub in an astonishing location with one of the best views in Sussex (West over Fulking Hill) and screw it up completely! Quite an achievement, but whoever owns/runs/manages this debacle of a boozer has managed this feat!

Slow service would be an understatement. We went in there prior to undertaking a National Trust guided walk. Said walk was due to commence at 2.00 p.m. We entered the establishment at 1.00 p.m. and ordered the culinarily complex dish of 'two bowls of chips.' - We barely got out in time for the walk! As for obtaining drinks - that so-called "service" proceeds at glacial speed.

This place is of use only if you wish to shelter from the howling winds which frequent the Dyke. As a pub, it is a travesty, which is such a pity given its stupendous location - Shame on the management!
26 Dec 2008 22:01
Very disappointed. Went up on the open-top bus hoping for a good pint in the evening. Long queue to be served, and then no cask beer was available, just the fizzy stuff.
5 Aug 2008 19:55
Seems to have improved- slightly! Decent pint of Harveys at least
