My first visit to this temple of good beer and I wasn't disappointed. Packed out and a wait to be served through the throngs at the bar but that's popularity. Three from Dark Star, Hophead, Summer Solstice (excellent) and Mild for May, plusLomond Gold, Milestone Black Pearl and HB Clark Heady Daze plus a cider and a rare perry. An impressive range of bottled beers from Belgium, Germany Czech Republic and the USA plus some Belgian stuff on draught.
An unusual looking place from the outside, looks like two converted houses, this place serves fine ales to a broad range of discerning drinkers, as well as myself there was a stag party, a large number of ale enthusiasts, a couple of off duty binmen and even a bloke in a Dukla Prague shirt.....not sure if it was the away version! (One for the Half Man Half Biscuit fans).
A must visit for any keen ale drinker and one I'll certainly return to.

Fantastic ale house. Basic boozer with plenty of ales - Gadds Dark, Dark Star Sunburst, Milestone IPA and 1648 Declaration got ticked by me and there more....
No frills, just great ale!

Undoubtedly one of the best pubs in the country, with some of the best beers. Highly recommended.

Traditional old Harveys house with a carpetted lounge and a public bar with wooden floors. Bigger than it first appears, the lounge opens up to a quieter room behind this in turn leading on to a large conservatory type space. A garden area lies beyond.
Music and theatre posters decorate the walls, the etched window to the bar proclaims "Smoking Room". How times have changed.
Harveys Sussex Best, Hadlow, XX Mild, Olympia Golden and a wheat beer, Copperwheat I think on handpump. Two proper ciders too, Addlestone's and Westons Organic.
21 Jun 2008 12:18
Decent pint of Harveys Armada when I called in. Seemed a bit quiet on a monday evening but would call in again when passing.

I can never decide on my favourite pub in Brighton. Is it the Lord Nelson, or the Evening Star? I guess I'll just have to carry on visiting both to find out. But what if I never do find out - will I have to keep drinking in both? Oh yes please.

The Lord Nelson is a pub that looks small from the outside but is actually quite spacious inside, and with an inviting gallery room right at the back. The Harveys beers are always superb and most of the usual varieties are here - if not the entire range.

Not living in Brighton I can't discern who the regulars are but the atmosphere is friendly and inviting - I've never experienced that icy stare reserved for outsiders that you get in some pubs.

I have nothing but fulsome praise for this pub - that's all you need to know. I'll stop now before I get boring.

Reviews by BITE users:

Street corner Fullers/Gales house on the edge of the North Laines area. A very relaxed ambience with a definite bohemian feel, wooden floos and bar, traditional seating; the walls are adorned with tin signs and old tin boxes of the Oxo or tobacco type while beermats and cigarette cards decorate the area around the bar. A real mix of clientelle from trendy 20somethings and student types up to OAPs with yours truly somewhere in the middle I suppose! An eclectic mix of non mainstream music plays at a subdued volume so not preventing conversation. An efficient friendly hands on guv presides, and makes sure everyone entering is greeted and thanked on leaving.
The food looked good and the menu suggests an emphasis on locally sourced and organic produce. Daily specials are listed on the chalkboard over the bar.
Beers were ESB, Pride, Discovery, HSB, Butser and Jennings Cumberland.
Very pleasant and enjoyable, worthy of inclusion in any crawl of the area.
21 Jun 2008 12:05
Called in for a quick beer just before last orders and wished I'd found it earlier.
Gem of a pub, 6 ales on, The Gales Butser was in very good form. Loved the interior with the tobacco/cigar tins on the walls. Liked the idea of the Malt of the month as well.
Will call back next time I'm in town.
16 Jun 2008 16:36
Fabulous pub, one of the best in Brighton along with the legendary Evening Star. Not too many conference delegates in here. Fullers ales are pretty good and they do Gales Butser and a guest ale.
Decor inside is pleasant traditional but the outside could now do with a coat of paint!

Reviews by BITE users:

Fairly unprepossessing from the outside but that changes once through the door. A genuine welcome and quick service even though the place was reassuringly busy in the early afternoon. Wooden floors and tables, green bench type seating and green walls over a timber wainscot give a comfortable relaxed feel. 2/3 "rooms" albeit open to each other but all having the feel of a seperate area. A garden is situated at the rear off the main bar.
Harveys Sussex, Adnams Explorer, London Pride and Tanglefoot on the handpumps.
I'm not sure of the significance of the mini statue of a teddy boy/rocker toting a machine gun or whether it is Elvis or some other? A bookshelf contains some shabby volumes, many with a cricket theme.
21 Jun 2008 11:48
Quite a nice pub only a coupe of minutes walk from the station. Quite a traditional feel to it witha couple of different rooms and a patio garden. Beers well kept(Harveys, Sharps Doombar and Summer Lightning when I was in). We ate lunch and the food was pub grub but quite acceptable and not extortionate. Well worth the visit.
11 Apr 2008 18:27
Just a skip from Brighton station and you are at the Battle. Sorry smokers, but the smoking ban has put this back on my list of favourite pubs in Brighton. It's friendly and a proper traditional pub. The food menu looks quite good but I've not tried it. This pub is great for a summer drink as its garden is quite large for such a central pub. Interesting interior - worth the short walk up the hill from the station!

Added to yesterday's Brighton crawl (10mins on train) and struck lucky as there was a beer festival in full swing, some 20 or so to choose from. Local camra poty 7 times in the last 10yrs, great stuff.
15 Jun 2008 08:42
Friendly local pub, beers were in good condition - a real find!
5 Mar 2008 10:38
Proper community pub with pub decor. Thatchers cider is on sale most of the time. If that is off, there is still Old Rosie. TV screens could be distracting in the Public Bar.

Reviews by BITE users:

This pub seems popular with a wide mix of people. It's really welcoming and we make a point of visiting when we want to relax with the Sunday papers or to chat with friends. The background music is just the right level - no irritating booming noise to shout over! We often eat here and the food in recent months has got better and better - lots of interesting but a reasonably priced specials, yummy roasts and curries on a Wednesday. It has been taken over by fullers, and the signs outside are new, but the staff, the beers and the friendly atmosphere are as good as ever - it's one of my favourite pubs in Brighton, but make sure you check out the map on the website as it's quite well hidden. They let dogs in too.
31 Mar 2008 23:16
Nice local pub with friendly staff but unfortunately no local beer, it just serves Fullers and Fullers brands... The George Gales Festival ale was nice, just a shame its brewed in London now and not Horndean :(

Home-made burgers were nice though.
22 Mar 2008 14:27
Nightmare! Now a Fullers pub!!
The great Arms picture on the wall outside the pub to be replace by a revolting Fullers plastic logo.
Obviously the beer choice has collapsed as well to just a choice of Fullers.
The food choice has been restricted.
The atmosphere is still good and a great place for a drink but dont these idiots realise this is a locals pub and for people who want to seek it out.
How long will it last like these??

Give me strength!!!!

PS Wasnt run by the people who ran the Basketmakers as well? Why did they sell it off to Fullers?

Cheerful and attentive staff.

Decent pint of Black Sheep.

Good Sunday roast (always a good indicator of quality)

Relaxed atmosphere.

Great one for chilled lunch, rather than lads' night out.
21 Apr 2008 15:30
Friendly, cheerful service and some Jamaican dub playing which is far more interesting than the M People Lighthouse Family sandwich you get in most hostelries nowadays.

The beer is good and the location is prime. Terenced almost breaks into a smile.
21 Apr 2008 08:52
Really good pub , nice bar staff good beer, good music, the food is second to none, i hope it stays the same,so many pubs become the victim of their own sucsess, we have a potential victim

Nice lively pub with good beer from Hepworth Brewery.Worth a look before going to the Lord Nelson down the road.
29 Apr 2008 15:39
1/10! Not the most gay-friendly of places.

This is a vibrant and lively pub. It has lots of 'texture' and is only a stone's throw from the station. I've been a few times and arranged a birthday do there. The staff courteously took a few hundred quid off us during the evening but then had the most ridiculous drinking-up-time policy that had a bouncer removing drinks from our hands in a pub that was still half full. One of my gay friends was also jibed by one of the staff who asked if he'd 'got his handbag'. It was an embarrassing and scruffy end to what would otherwise have been a nice evening.
6 Apr 2008 14:18
Easily the best pub in brighton. Have to agree about the decor, but lets face it thats not the reason you go in a pub is it. Best priced food in Brighton. Friendly (+fit) staff. Need to get normal Guinness back and sort out the smoking area.

Reviews by BITE users:

the bugle has always been mooted as a 'proper' pub, real ale, occasional music, garden, not pretentious. on my last visit the beer was awful, staff were sullen and rude and garden was tatty. sorry
30 Oct 2007 11:05
A brilliant pub with friendly people, I've had some really good nights at the Bugle.
26 Oct 2007 11:41
Moved into the Bugle around 1964 ish.
Used to be a Watney Tamplin pub.
Swapped to Courage in the mid 70s I think, Mum and Dad, Den and Gwen moved out before Iain and Eileen moved in about 14-15 years ago.
As far as we know only one other family of licencees have held the pub and that was the Wells family from when it was built.
Agree with all the other posts ~ has always been a good locals' pub and despite interferences by numerous brewers has a fantastic cellar for keeping beer in good nick (despite the stupid refrigeration plant installed in the 80's!)
Only manage one visir per year but always , still ,receive a very warm welcome! Thanks to Iain and Eileen for keeping up the good work.

Sometimes up and down this place. But when it gets it right, the food alone puts it among brightons elite. Good: sunday roast (lamb is to die for), Pizza, Table service
Not so good: a bit slow when busy, confusing amount of blackboards. Overall had two great sessions there and hope to return.
2 Dec 2007 20:10
Excellant place. The pizza we had were one of the best we had for ages. Even our very fussy daughter liked the food. Location excellant. Right in Norfolk Square. Good atmoshere - very relaxed. Definitly go back again soon

Nice chilled out atmosphere with a great range of beers (where else in the locality can you get Oranjeboom on tap?). Perfect for a pint or two after the commute home!

used to sell oranjeboom lager, dont know if it still does.

Reviews by BITE users:

i find the female staff in this pub exceptionally rude, and £3.15 for a pint of bitter is ridiculous. Used to be good, now it isn't. A shame, as the location is great.
26 Apr 2008 17:15
Can't coment on the atmosphere as my visit was on a quite Tuesday lunchtime. Found it to be a comfortable refuge on a cold Spring day. Nice pint of Bishops Finger. Food is 'pub grub' of good quality and generous portions - must try the burger next time. Table service - nice touch. Staff friendly and attentive. Certainly a cut above the crap you get in Churchill Square's food hall.
26 Mar 2008 09:45
Was good until management change. Geoff and Chris were a 'one off' and no one will ever match them. Now a Shepherd Neame House - nothing wrong with that per sae, but atmosphere totally gone. Only link with the past is Chris, the Head Barman but even this can't replicate the good old days!

Excellent little pub, full of character. However, the pubs own beers are pretty terrible - the Olde Trout tasted like vinegar. Thankfully the guest beers from Dark Star were wonderful.
Please fit the leak in the toilet ceiling, as I had a very damp crap.
29 Apr 2008 15:36
visited to taste their local beer. had kemp town ale and old trout, both tasted the same, totally bloody awful!!! nice corner pub. nice decor inside too.
12 Nov 2007 17:16
Brilliant little boozer - feels a bit like being in someone's front room - about forty years ago! Roast potatos, cheese, pickles and crackers on the bar on Sundays, a pub dog and fab ale - what more could you want?!! There a great mix of old queens, hilarious pensioners, 'cool' students and everythiingin between but as far as I've seen NEVER any trouble.

Mediocre outlet. Good 'lanes' corner location - but could do a lot better. My visit (last Sunday week) was at lunchtime and the barman was barely polite and seemed bored of his job - and life ! The new Youngs' Seven Stars, just around the corner (where O'Neills was), will emphasise this pub's lack of ambition.
16 Jun 2008 11:10
Have an Old Peculiar in here and go and make an impulsive cd purchase afterwards.

Polite service, decent beer and it gets an extra point from me because it's green on the outside.
21 Apr 2008 08:53
Surprised this pub has such a high rating. Had a Harvey's which was a bit cloudy and tasted of metal. Seems to be a bit rough and bouncer controlled. Maybe I was just unlucky.

friendly quiet pub (on a sunny afternoon atleast) well kept ales, the belgium beer list not that extensive but far better than your average town pub

Visited on the ale trail and sat outside in the sun. Looked to be a small one roomed bar area - beer fine.
