Also is no longer called Harry tates, it is now a nightclub called Crash Manor.

How things change.

Only went in here when it was the conservatory bar.
I think if my memory serves me right it was more of a bar than a club although I am talking 20 odd years ago!

6/10

What is a matelot? I'm not a student and I no longer reside in Plymouth but next time I am down I'll pop in and give it a look. And I can assure you the Walkabout is not my scene either. I like Ride and Cuba and James Street Vaults is cool too. They may be deemed student hangouts - so be it. I like old man pubs but they are few and far between in Plymouth. Ones of any quality anyway.

James,i see your point but-although Harrys' is not "a matelot pub" and I get the feel you're a student, you will have to just bear with us because its bang in the middle of our beaten track and us "high class" matelots do like Harrys'(when we can get served) and we can afford to get ripped off in Jesters afterwards!-If you dont like that then you can always go to Walkabouts or some other manufactured,artificial,plastic,robo-bar staffed hostelry.
I like Harrys'..BE TOLD!!!
my frogs a janner! - 24 Mar 2004 14:53
I used to go here when it was the Conservatory and would have suggested it for a few quiet afternoon drinks. Judging from what has benn said here the place has changed tact. I felt therefore, unqualified to comment, that is until I noticed that someone had recommended it as a precursor to a night at Jesters. This alone is warning to avoid at all costs:
Good for: falling over before going to Jesters it seems.

Hmmm..service with a smile, unless you find yourself inexplicably vetoed by the barmaids.

Absentem laedit, qui cum ebrio litigat.
help,I think my frog may be welsh! - 23 Mar 2004 21:16
The tall guy is a doorman? He told me he was the manager, what's this about a manageress? Never noticed the music thing, seemed to be new stuff whenever i've been in there, but that's only been at weekends though.

Feel safer now they have new doorman during the week, the really tall guy spends more time playing on the fruit machines than doing his job at least the new guy stands on the door

harry tates is a new bar in town but with the feeling that it has been there forever not dirty or old but bags of character. the staff are great very friendly, toilets are clean and the beer is cold. not the best drinks offers around but when vodka is only 1.90 with splash at regular prices who can complain. a quiet pub during the week but great if you want to feel like a local without knowing anyone. weekends, fantastic livens up at around eleven and hell does it liven up

Been there on a couple of weekends now, place is rammed with some seriously tasty totty :) Have to get there early cos the buy one get one free ends at 9pm and they start up different offers. Barstaff are very friendly even when busy. Doorstaff are curtious (rare these days!) DJ is, to put it mildly, nuts. Plays a good selection of music, but he seems to be playing a bit more chart stuff than he used too :( Decor is amazing, easily the best presented pub in town, knocks the spots off that shithole jesters nextdoor.
Has the regulation giant screen for the football and rugby coverage, pool table and seating area along with a second bar upstairs give the place a very spaceous feel.
Overall, really like the place, opens early with drink offers (which i like at the weekend!) and provides good entertainment all night. Couldn't ask for more.
