Perfect village inn - lots of rooms, quirky pub decor, friendly staff.

lovely pint of theakstons best bitter.

Highly recommended and easily the best of the two in the village.

A decent pub with 5 or 6 casks available. Well worth a visit.

Popped in on our way past for a pint whilst out walking on a wet winters day. Enjoyed them sat in front of the fire drying off a bit. Castle Rock Harvest Pale and Adnams Southwold Bitter were on offer, along with a couple of others. Staff were nice, prices high-ish.

You are pretty much right about all of that GeofB.
Personally I quite like the Old Hall, but with regard to the uniformity which is rife with Peak District pubs the blame lies firmly with the pubco's.
There's no doubt that popping out for a quick couple is no longer an option for most people if 5-7 barely wets the sides.

Big rambling place, lots of interconnected rooms. A typically average Peak District car-tourist pub with respect to prices, food quality, beer quality, beer choice, and customer service which means that you will pay around 7 for a half decent baguette sandwich and chips, and around 3.30 per pint with a choice of 3 or 4 well kept cask ales served by professionally polite barstaff. This place is so similar to others that it is difficult to do a meaningful review of them other than bang on about minor irrelevant differences.
Considering that the average price of a pint across the country is supposed to be 2.70 and that a sandwich and chips ought realistically be more at the 4 to 6 level these pubs seem to float in a higher plane of existence with suspiciously similar high prices. If only it was economical for Wetherspoons to open a few pubs in the countryside to bring in a little competition. As the Times stated recently, a pint of beer nowadays is
becoming a luxury item.

Did a lovely walk from Bamford to Edale and Hope was a good stopping point for a pint (or 2) despite being a lovely sunny day a few of us decided to sit at the bar. There was a number of beers on offer and we all enjoyed our what we had. Friendly and knowledgeable bar staff. It was one of those afternoons when the sun is shining and you feel a session coming on, we took a vote and decided to continue the walk over the hills to Edale. Glad we did as the views were amazing.

Hi there..i Came to the old hall on the saturday just gone! and i must say we did enjoy ourselves. slight wait on food but understandable with the amount of people waiting and there was only one whaiter but he kept us up to date on our food even though he was very busy. once our meals came they were very good and cheaper than we had thought it would be when the bill was totalled! all in all 8 out of ten Only a ten if it was closer to home! (wales) Would like thank dominic and pascal for a lovely evening....ho hee hoo he hoorrr seemed to be the chefs catchphrase. Thankyou.

Couple of decent regular ales and the odd guest ale. All in very good condition. Had a good lunch but it took ages to arrive - not a problem for us as we were happy to sit outside in the sun and have a drink. Has opened up a new cafe alongside the pub, selling coffee and cakes.
Staff seemed very friendly and helpful.

Called in for bank holiday beerfest and very good it was too.

Warm welcome from friendly landlord and team and just 2.50/pint for festival ales.

Pub itself cosy and traditional, 2 maybe 3 handpulls on (bit hazy by the time I got inside) Didn't dine myself but overheard lots of positive comments from those who did.

Return visit this weekend! - hopefully!

I have been visiting The Old Hall, Hope for some time now and have found the new Landlord Rick to be a gentleman who has everything required to push this venue all the way to the top! I have read some post's on here which have put The Old Hall down...these are OLD posts and should be removed a.s.a.p!
The food is wonderfull and the beer is well looked after and is of a very high quality. The Landlord has a wicked sence of humour and is always willing to go out of his way to assist in any way he can. The accommodation is excelent and the tea room and food there in are second to none. I spend rather a lot of time in the hope valley and though I do frequent a number of pubs in the area, I am now happy to say the atmosphere in The Old Hall wins me over every time.
Can I also point out that I am vegitarian and the vegi food is worth the visit.
Top marks to Rick the New Landord and I think its time to put the pubs past where it deserves to be...IN THE PAST! Keep up the great work guys.

My husband and I visited the old hall inn at hope on Sunday 30th Jan whilst taking a walk out for the afternoon. We often take drives out over the weekend to new places, we had driven over from the Pennines. We decided to stop at the old hall as it seemed to look very nice from the outside. When we walked in we had a very warm welcome by all the staff, It was like walking into our local back in saddleworth as if we had been going in for years. As for the menu it gives you a good choice we didn't no what to order at first but once we did order our food it was very well presented and was very very nice too. We was very impressed overall by everything. We will be visiting the old hall inn in the very near future.

Thank you to all the staff at the Old Hall Inn. Lucy & Paul from the Pennines

I cannot agree at all with the previous post. Every time I've been in here since the new landlord took over I've been impressed by the improvements, but especially in the friendly attitude of the staff!
The beer was very well kept (Old Speckled Hen) and the food well cooked and good value.

As for the pubs in Castleton, let's just say that in a tourist trap they don't have to try too hard and it shows.
thomjohnthom - 2 Feb 2011 14:09
What a quiet pub...... Well yes it is because the food is aweful and i mean aweful. Tough Steak rude staff and cold chips.. As for the Beer, Run of the mill not very well kept Rubbish.. If you want Good Beer travel up the road to Castleton and try the Chesire cheese or the Nags head now there proper cask ale pubs!!!

Reading the comments that have been left since my original statement it seems that the Old Hall is worthy of a second visit. It makes a nice change to hear of a landlord making such a success of this old pub. I wish him well and will nip in when I get the chance. Well done.

HI FOLKS. Rick the Landlord here. thanks for all your ace comments so far. Its been a long six months but i think its turning into a great place to eat out or just injoy a couple of pints with the family. The new no swareing policy realy works, and the introduction of 55 single malts behind the bar seem very popular. The new tea rooms are now open so i sugest you try the full derbyshire breckfast when your next in the aria. So far between me and the brewery 85,000 has been spent. Work has now finnishd til april, when we will be having new lighting and signage outside. If you have any requests or comments on the pub good or bad, please feel free to email them to me [email protected]. keep visiting. You aint seen nothing yet. Rick

I am from kent and visited hope for a weekend with my wife and two children. we went to the old hall for an evening meal on saturday the 30th of october and was very impressed by the standard of food i was served. i tried the sirloin and it was excellent and i was impressed with the specials which included ostrich steaks, something I have never tried but intend to at a later date. All in all a place i would highly reccomend to visit if your in the area for a good value but quality meal.
welshy37 - 3 Nov 2010 01:07
I had lunch at this pub today.
I was served..reheated chips..from last week... and stale baguette. The standard of food on a scale of 1 to 10 is ZERO.
The food left an aftertaste.I would recommend that this pub is 100% AVOIDED.There is a SPAR shop next door..a Mars bar would be better...
speedbird22 - 30 Oct 2010 19:03
Yes I agree. A bit of friendly service goes a long way. This is the first time I've been in for ages due to the previous poor atmosphere / service / everything really and I was very pleasantly surprised.
hermanshermanthegerman - 13 Oct 2010 18:43
What a difference the new manager has made. All the staff are friendly and helpful.
Good food, good beer and a willingness to be helpful for people leaving early or arriving late.
A real chef!
StephenTompsett - 17 Jul 2010 14:03
What a difference a year makes. I was passing last weekend. A real landlord who means business and there are expansion plans afoot. Friendly, very hard working staff (the bartenders words) and spotlessley clean. The Pub food is excellent thanks to a hard working french chef and their seems to be a few locals creeping back into a new snug area. A real pleasure to see such a turnaround.

IvanTabeer - 16 Jul 2010 16:56
We've been several times since the new land lord took over and it is an absolute pleasure. The food is delicious and is made fresh rather than boil in the bag so yes you don't get your food in 10 minutes but when it does come it is great. I would especially go for the steak. Chatting to the land lord he has had many challenges since taking over only a month ago so it is great to see a pub having new life put into it.
pidge_uk - 14 Jun 2010 21:18
Short visit on Bank Holiday Monday. Place fairly busy but not packed. Several more customers turned up but went away after being told there was 40 minute delay for food. Beer was Theakston's Bitter which was average. Probably would't revisit.
peterboroughpubs - 2 Jun 2010 11:06
Service for food, absolutly disgusting. Waited for 1 1/2 hours to no avail. Then was given horrible attitude from we persume the new landlord. Will not be visiting this place again. Shame really the locals were really nice, but staff and the boss were awful.
shellyt - 31 May 2010 18:53
What a change
A Year ago this pub was well run with plenty of friendly staff, clean rooms and landlady /chef who dished up good home made food. The landlord was a lazy but friendly scot. Now there are managers - Absolutely no interest in the pub itself. The staff have long-gone, dirty tables - waiting times for verrrry average food - No locals (I'm told this is a bad sign in the Hope Valley). To Bad

IvanTabeer - 11 Jul 2009 22:25
compleate waste of time, had booked a room for the friday night but arrived after a 2 hour drive to find they had given our room away to some one else (who wanted it for a week-convienent we where the ones who got shunted up the road huh?) offered us a room up the road in a b and b that was quite nice but not the the point. Owner/manager hid upstairs while the barman had to explain what had happend, needless to say we drove home and spent our money else where. Ruined our anniversary AVOID at all cost.
funkymunky - 7 Jul 2008 17:18
one of the worst i have been to in a while for food, ordered food and the wait was over 2 hours, when asking about time was told it will be next out yet this was never the case, food portions were also not as large as would have liked. the atmosphere in the pub was also too quiet for what i prefer and the only good thing i have to say about it is that the other customers were friendly and that the building itself is in an ok state.
stargazerhill - 25 Mar 2008 12:51
Had a nice pint in here yesterday - the barman was very friendly. It does fall down with its beer garden, as this is just a patio and rather too close to the main road running through the village.
pubcollector - 10 Jun 2007 21:22
called in this pub with 3 mates, and our 7 well behaved, children, the landlord kicked us out, beacause the kids were eating sweets, that were "not bought here" honest to god, this man is the most unfriendly, ignorant i have ever met.He doesent even sell sweets anyway.
john25666 - 7 May 2007 18:22
The Old hall serves a decent range of beers, is quite large due to a recent extension.
But bar staff we encountered needed to be a bit more friendly.
history100 - 19 Jun 2005 15:10
Stayed here for the weekend, very nice and food good. Asked for smoking room when I booked, and when I got there ALL rooms were none smoking. (expect it did me good) B&B cost me fifty pound for 2 of us.Would probably stay again
