please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

This is the best pub in the town centre. Despite being tucked away on the High Street (a fairly quiet back street), it was busy on my Saturday evening visit with all tables taken. Most people appeared to be in for the rugby. But there was also a pool table in use at one corner. The ale selection is probably the best in town. They had Marble Pint, Wye Valley HPA & Butty Bach, North Riding Ice Cream Porter & Sadlers Thin Ice. Cider was Black Dragon. I went for the Ice Cream Porter, which was delicious. Just could have done with a seat!

Terrific back-street pub that seems to attract a friendly mixture of locals and students. Good range of beers, comprehensive juke-box and nice staff. Highly recommended.

We were assured by two different interlocutors that this is the best pub in Aberystwyth and the ale selection and general cosiness were certainly winners - even if the presence of Herefordshire tipples among other English brews seemed a little unpatriotic. The barman's very drawing of the pint smacked of experience and the pub is located on a pleasantly undulating street.

Well worth finding this place which is tucked away down a side street. Wye Valley HPA is the regular along with cider and 4 guest ales. Excellent condition yesterday and pretty good service considering that it was crowded due to the arrival of a special train! Pool table and darts board. Usually opens at 1400 but can open earlier by prior arrangement. Easily the best pub in Aber.

This pub is criminally underrated. The guy behind the bar gives advice on what is good, what you'll like, what is new, what is tried and tested. The drink is excellent. As a ciderhead (with a beery friend), the cider was spot on.

A really excellent pub.

I visted this pub on an eight day "tour of Britain" and can say that it was by far the best pub that I visited. A great selection of beers and excellent and knowledgable staff who knew good beer. I drank a couple of funny tasting local ales before setting on the "Hereford IPA" which I was not expecting a lot of (southern shit beer from a cider area) but enjoyed it so much that I had five more before staggering back to the hotel. A must see pub and the only one I have ever rated as 10 out of 10.

Managed to track this little pub down - tucked away along a back street behind the castle (also near to a fantatstic bookshop). A small but varied selection of Real Ales and a friendly landlord. There were a few regulars there all of a variety of ages but very welcoming.
Great painting of a ship sailing by the castle can be found in the bar at the bottom.
Had a really nice stout while there. Would recommend this pub to any real ale fans who find themselves in this part opf Wales.

Open after a refurb that has refreshed the place without spoiling its character. Fantastic selection of ale and always a really friendly welcome.

Very friendly. Opened early due to a railtour being in town, and they were well deserving of custom. Excellent Welsh ales at great prices. Landlord was well willing to discuss his beer. Only quibble from me is that though the jukebox had an excellent choice the sound was way too low, even after being turned up TWICE!!!

The must visit in Aber.

The beer is still great! In response t the previous review about an update, the plans are on the wall in the pub to update next summer (2009). The barman was reassuring that it would still be a real ale pub!

Easily the best pub n Aber for reliably good beer - the Wyve Valley is fantastic. I agree with the comments about the toilets - time for a spot of modernisation there, Ian! Feel perfectly acceptable for a woman on her own - though the age group of the clientele varies according to whether it's uni term-time.

What a great pub. Went in Thursday 13 December. Friendly staff, nice bohemian crowd and some great beer - had an excellent pint of Woods Christmas Cracker. Went to a couple of other pubs as well but came back here.

Not easy to get a decent standard pint here.....twee beers from micro-breweries that taste like por quality home brew....best avoided by the traditional beer lover...

Now back to towards its best, six interesting beers on the go and in very good nick too. Won CAMRA's Ceredigion Pub of the Year for 2006 - on this form it's easy to see why.

The only must-visit pub in Aber!

Another good Sunday lunch venue, and one of the best real ale pubs in the town. Toilets are a bit cramped.

Last weekend the Barmaid at the "Angel" sent me here but they had run out of Brains Dark MILD. Never mind the "Fountain" is not too far away just over the bridge where I went next for a few drinks of their excellent Brains Dark MILD on handpull.

Used to be THE real ale place in Aber. Pete & Dee did a grand job, along with the Hound Of The Baskervilles that used to patrol the bar.

Alas they are now gone. Some of the old fittings have been ripped out (to no obvious effect) and there seems to be a little less real ale on these days than there were.

However, I am grateful for the small mercy that there are still as many ales on as you'd find in Yr Hen Orsaf (Wethies) and the atmosphere remains great and gets ludicrously busy on a Friday.

So still THE real ale place in Aber. But not quite the same...

Reopened now under new management (the people who ran The Mill, Aberystwyth). It's been redecorated and looks 'lighter', with more open space. The selection of real ales on tap at any given time seems slightly more limited, but it's still a great pub (or maybe I'm just glad to have my local back)!

It is Boarded up at the moment, apparently they didn't renew their license and the police closed it down

This pub is always in the camera good beer guide, around 5-6 guest ales always on tap. Good Sunday lunch too!. Friendly if a bit dodgy looking local crowd. One of Aberystwyth's oldest pubs.
