user reviews of the Old Wine Vaults, Faversham

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

The carpets give a cosy feel to the pub. Lots of beams and a split level floor. Friendly with a decent selection of real ales. We were eating elsewhere but the menu looked enticing.

Great beer, great pub, great food. Now the Vaults Cask and Kitchen. Getting better all the time!

3rd pub of the day after the Phoenix and the Bear.

A very deceiving pub that opens out into a large bar area with a combination of carpets and wood flooring running throughout

Half a dozen beers on the pumps with the selection I chose more being more than adequate. Also a good range of ciders were available

As it was Saturday lunchtime, the small front bar was hosting a children's party with the rest of the pub being fairly quiet and empty.

This is another food pub with a large selection of the tables being laid for food.

I have messaged you firebrand explaining the extra costs involved over the weekend and hope to see you and buy you a pint!

Well it was a very busy weekend at the annual 'faversham hop festival'....however, like other pubs in the town, i was discusted that the beer prices were 'hiked up' for this event at 'the Vaults'...with so much extra trade, was it nessersary?
Im sure im not the only one to notice this!
I find this 'robbery' totally unacceptable...and have had to say something about it.
I for one will be 'voting from my pocket'....in the future.
I would normally rate this pub as an 8......however, now its much lower in my estimation.
A disgruntled customer.

Friendly welcome and well kept ales. Always an enjoyable experience.

Hopdaemon Incubus, Hobgoblin and Summer Lightning. Spacious pub with an attractive garden. Comfortable.

Having been implored by the licensee to visit when next in Faversham and review the pub, I thought I'd do just that as I was in town this weekend. Regrettably, things didn't begin too comfortably, as my chum and I were turned away Fri eve as they'd closed - this was despite plenty of customers still in the bar and it having only just passed 11. Looks like they stick to the book rigidly but there it is. We attempted service a 2nd time the following morning but found it closed! The pub did eventually yield, and once there we enjoyed very well-kept ale (Woodforde's Wherry on fine form) and a pleasant demeanour from the barmaid. A large interior with plenty of seating, clearly the owner is aiming at the upper end of the local market. A reasonably classy feel pervades the pub, although inevitably the pricetags match these ambitions. Still, the Vault (note singular) seems to satisfy a wide spread - elderly ladies were in soon after us on Sat morn for lunch, along with a young family and various others. Hopefully next time I'll get a greater chance to witness the place in full flow of an evening.

I have visited The Old Wine Vault twice since it opened and I have been impressed on both occasions. This pub was previously known as The Hole in the Wall (which had developed a bad reputation over this years), and I was pleasantly surprised to see that it had turned in to a classy establishment. The first time I visited this pub was for lunch with my mum and we both enjoyed the food, the style of the pub and the relaxed atmosphere so much that we intend to go back for lunch/dinner again very soon. I returned for the 2nd time with my friend on Saturday evening just for drinks, she was equally impressed with the style of the pub and the relaxed atmosphere and it was lovely to just sit around on a table chatting in such a lovely location. What makes the pub so fascinating is that from the outside it is very deceptive, it appears to look like a fairly small establishment, then you walk in to this exceptionally large bar!, lots of tables and seating areas (some in hidden corners), a big long bar, plenty of space and I've heard the garden is lovely and big too (I've yet to check this out!), staff always pleasant + friendly too

My partner and myself visited the Old Wine Vaults as part of a Faversham pub crawl last Saturday.

Cannot really fault the Vaults for the look of the place - all stripped wood and comfortable chairs. The bar also looks inviting, but it could do with one or two more beers on draught to maker the place a really impressive destination.

Ales on offer during our visit were: Hopdaemon - Incubus, Tring - Side Pocket for a Toad, and Hook Norton Brewery - Old Hooky. There was also a real cider if I remember rightly.

Have a look at the menu but didn't eat. Looks as if they've got some interesting grub on offer, including some unusual burgers - Venison and Rabbit!

Worth another visit next time we're in town.

Went to the Old Wine Vaults with a group of friends and thoroughly enjoyed the evening: fantastic selection of local beer (Side Pocket for a Toad & Incubus), scrumptious food (a finger-licking rabbit burger & 5-star sausages with mashed potato) and a warm and pleasant atmosphere. I cannot recommend it enough!!!

We visited the Old Wines Vaults in Faversham in January and we spent a great evening there with friends. The locals were friendly, the pub setting was cosy and relaxed. Their beer selection was interesting as we tasted something new and local. The food was lovely as it had pub classics with a modern twist.
We'd definitely go back and we have recommended it to friends for an escapade in beautiful Kent.
Cheers!

Seems the landlady is allways trying to big up her own pub, your not doing a bad job "nualabs",
beer is quite good but the clients who muster at the bar are letting you down!
I only call in every now and then, and I have bought the wife in but she did not want to eat there(same as weatherspoons for atmosphere)
Yes these are negatives!!!! find a positive and I will pass praise.

Visited the Old Wine Vaults last Wednesday. Highly recommended. Wednesday night is pie night and what delicious pies they are too! Not only are the pies delicious but the beer is too. They always seem to have a varied selection of more unusual beers including one from Hopdeamon (always a favourite).
The beers and pies are dispensed with cheer, wit and skill by the barman John - who is an absolute gem. His knowledge of the beer and the menu are spot on and he always recommends the right pie and the right beer for the right time!
All in all a cracking pub well worth a visit - especially on Wednesdays!
Dick_Perkins - 8 Nov 2010 14:28
Much improved since the old days of being the Hole in The wall.
Can now get a decent bite to eat and a decent pint and always a happy smiling face behind the bar
Recommend a visit!!!

Hi All
We at The OWV are very pleased and proud to let you all know we have been awarded the Cask Marque for our cask beer. I am sure I don't have to explain to you what this entails, surprise visits etc, but please look at their web site. This also tells you other pubs that have gained the award.
Thanks for the support we have had and we look forward to keeping up our standards so we can retain this.
Nuala

Oh and for the benfit of everyone, if I was going to boost my own pubs scores I could easily join this site as many different people and comment, there is no limit to how many identities etc. Please credit me with not being stupid enough to have worked that out! Also I would not dream of running down pubs around us to make us look better. Anyone that knows me will assure you that is just not my style, I let you make your minds up and do not ask for negative comments to be removed, I would rather try and address the things that crop up. Come and meet me and you can make your own mind up as to my honesty.

nualabs - 30 Jun 2010 18:58
Ha Ha Ha....Wine Vaults- you got busted!!!
Someone borrowed the laptop? Give your lap top out over the bar do you?
Come on...just own up...you screwed up and got busted.
Shame, as I really thought you were doing something new and special in a town thats well past its prime as far as drinking circuits are concerned.
Leave the comments to your customers.....No need to falsify the facts!!
cufc4 - 25 Jun 2010 19:34
Hi god_among_insects

I have asked for the the entry dated 17th of May to be removed. You are right I am the owner and honest I would not be daft enough or try to insult users of this site by faking entries. I am not sure who runs this site but having made repeated requests this has not been removed. The explaination for this is simple, someone asked to borrow my lap top and as we were quiet and I could keep an eye on them so it did not vanish, I let them use it. They obviously put the entry on. Again I really would not be silly enough to post this myself. Unlike other publican's I don't write false reveiws, bill myself as a freehouse when we are not (that really annoys me when pubs do that!) or try to get negative reviews removed.

We generally try to have 3 cask ales on (at the moment they are Incubus (Newnham, Faversham) Whitstable Brewery EIPA (Maidstone) and Summer lightning. We also have a cask cider from Biddendens which is proving very popular. It is better we do 3 ales and keep them well than try to keep 4 and lower the quality. We will have a larger choice at the Hop Festival.

I hope this clears up the confusion, hopefully the comment will be removed soon, and I am sorry and will keep a closer eye on anyone borrowing my laptop again!

Nuala

nualabs are you a customer or do you run the place, your 2 posts seem to conflict. Manager mascarading as custome or customer that thinks they run the place. Either way, doh!

Old wine vaults, not too bad, better than before. ales are nice, selection could be better. Friendly staff.
god_among_insects - 31 May 2010 13:23
We were also in the town on the occasion of the classic car show and were told of this pub by a friend. We liked it; the staff were civil and the the ale choice although limited did have a local micro on. Deserves to do well. They had a blackboard outside listing their current ales. We like that.
Steamer1 - 17 May 2010 21:58
Visited the pub on classic car show, what a great pub. Food is brilliant, beer a joy. Cant say anymore!!!
Camraman.....Whats your problem????
I didn't see any "Piss heads" or hear any swearing. I've been in there when people have used bad language and they are told to pack it in straight away.
By the way it certainly is not De Ole in de Wal any more and anyone who thinks it is.......would be very wrong, very wrong indeed.
nualabs - 17 May 2010 15:59
What a lovely pub, i walked past it not knowing it was there at first.

After being recommended this pub by the barman over the road, I decided to go with his recommendation of hopdeamon, and WOW, what a lovely pint it is.

After enjoying my pint and reading the newspaper (provided by the pub), i had a very enjoyable meal and a bottle of wine.

This pub offers a lot of character, the staff are polite and the drink selection is very good. The amount and quality of the food is superb and at very reasonable prices.

Will definately come back and recommend this to my friends, well worth a vist.

Date of visit Sunday 7th March 10

Well Cyberman, I am glad you enjoyed the beer. Although I strongly disagree with your further comments we are secure in the confidence that our customers know these are not accurate and enjoy our food with their families and loved ones. Reading your comments on other pubs in Faversham is most revealing.
nualabs - 3 Mar 2010 14:49
No change, same faces at the bar,
My pint was great, Incubus from Hopdeamon.
Work on it , I would not eat here because of the faces at the bar effing and blinding, would take my lady elsewhere.
CAMRAMAN1 - 24 Feb 2010 22:35
Not a bad pub and a massive improvement on its previous days as the hole.
Nice decor inside and nice and cosy
Service was a bit grumpy though
cufc4 - 18 Dec 2009 19:21
Thank you for your comments Camraman1, I am baffled though. We have worked hard to rid the pub of it's seedy image. We always have 3 cask ales (not "a ale on pump") and luckily lot's of people that enjoy drinking them. We will not let it slip back to how it was before. We work hard and constantly to ensure this.
I am dissapointed you had a negative experience and would love to meet you so you can tell me why this was, who was working that session etc. So we can make sure your next visit is more satisfying.
nualabs - 15 Nov 2009 15:55
Been away for a while serving Q & C, what a change!, real ale on offer, still a few piss heads in the bar,and a paint job will not make it "the wine vaults"but a change for the better, still"the hole" and will be for a long time needs more than a name change and a ale on the pump, worth a visit to notice changes.
CAMRAMAN1 - 21 Oct 2009 22:48
This pub used to be called The Hole in the Wall. You really wouldn't recognise it now that the TV, jukebox, pool tables and sticky carpets have been removed .

It's now a family friendly pub with a restaurant and a huge garden. It does good pub grub and serves 3 good real ales. The last time I went it was Hopdaemon Incubus, Hopback Summer Lightning and Black Sheep. Good choice.
They are very welcoming and work hard to constantly improve the place. The pub changes for the better every time I visit (once a month). Well recommended for an evening out.

Cyberbarman - 1 Oct 2009 16:28
A tardis of a town centre pub frequented my a friendly mix of locals from across the town.

Part of the Enterprise Inns stable, usually has 3-4 well kept real ales on tap often including the excellent Incubus from the nearby Hopdaemon microbrewery in Newnham.

Good food, friendly atmosphere.

Don't be put off when you walk by and se the empty front bar, no one uses it they're all out back in the larger bar.
