user reviews of the Hook, Line and Sinker, Twickenham

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

It's now called Ales & Tails. I agree with TW1 below. It's a place of missed opportunity and for bankruptcy not beer. £3.00 for a half of 6.2% beer. It's not busy so I fear that the ultimate bankruptcy may be its own.
MeurglysIII - 24 Nov 2012 09:00
Reopening as a craft beer bar in oct. From the 3 week trial in sept, looks like prices will be 4-6 a pop!. Nice enough beer, but clearly wants to be the most expensive bar in town.
If you want beer not bankruptcy, wander ten minutes to the Sussex arms by the green instead. They've got it right for the real ale drinker. This craft place is an unfortunate miss, despite home smoked sausages.

New Ranch New staff great vibe good music good fun on karaoke fridays worth a try they got something on every day
hiphead - 5 May 2009 00:56
This is now CLOSED. The lease has been up for sale for some time.
Cleversaz - 11 Nov 2008 14:11
The Ranch is fine if you are a fan of places like the George in Twickenham or Mclusky's in Kingston. So...if you are not - AVOID!
JAMESRWM - 24 Feb 2008 11:29
this pub has shut down!
dippyemmy - 21 Dec 2007 21:01
As the Hook, Line and Sinker used to be Rubbish - but now as the Ranch .... well it's still rubbish. Before it was a poor all bar one with no clients. Now at least it has clients - on a weekend packed with youngsters just finished from School at Orleans by the looks of it.
What has happened to Twickenham - Just Church Street and THe Swan left or maybe the Clubhouse. The Ranch may be better than before but not saying much and I'm not going back to try.
CharlesS - 26 Apr 2007 14:55
looks OK! New management, new layout, worth a try...
foney - 6 Apr 2007 20:10
The Hook Line and Sinker is no more - it has been renamed The Ranch - perhaps run by cowboys ?

I didn't go in, it looks just like every other place in Twickenham nowadays
JohnBonser - 2 Apr 2007 17:15
Friday night and only 13 people in the place is never a good sign, but with miserable staff what do you expect???
lilaclover - 23 Feb 2007 18:31
yep, used to be a good pub - now most of us stay away due to bad attitude of manager.... anyone know when it will be 'renamed' ???
foney - 23 Dec 2006 11:36
i hate this pub since the old manager left. things have changed around and i have heard its shutting down now.... thank heavens! hopefully a change of staff will change things for this place and just as it was starting to get better too! i dont know if fullers are selling it or refurbishing it but they should bring back the young guy that left in november as he had the right idea about how this bar should be run. lets hope things pick up after it opens so it rivals the grand union, the bear and the webbe ellis.
philtaylor1979 - 16 Dec 2006 16:40
Just heard that Fullers have finally sold this bar to the mint group. I see another trendy wine and cocktail bar opening up here as all the other bars they own are. maybe they should have a live music venue as they actually own KOKO in camdem....cant be doing too bad then. watch this space. grant
anonymous - 23 Nov 2006 00:32
Was in twickenham over the weekend to watch the rugby. This has to be the worst pub in Twickenham. The beer was warm, the bar staff were surly and unfriendly and no-one seemed to know or care what was going on. Definitely one to miss next time.
anonymous - 6 Nov 2006 19:10
just a nice friendly bar to visit. never any trouble.
anonymous - 4 Nov 2006 00:56
nice range of wine and good tasty food. always fills up for sport and weekends and staff are good. P.P.P.......pretty pleasant place!
philtaylor1979 - 4 Nov 2006 00:55
This pub is a big disappointment. The tables are disgusting, you stick to them when you lean on them. The pub is almost always empty, except for the odd day. The food is boring and the selection of spirits is minimal (there is absolut vodka in different flavours but that is about it). Just dont go to this pub, travel to richmond or somewhere else if you really want a decent drink.
toxicostrich - 23 Oct 2006 01:29
Found this place to be good. Actually has a beer list on the menu which is a bit rare, so thats a good bonus. Very much a sports kind of pub, plenty of seating
aleman - 22 Oct 2006 22:12
decent pub if you're over 21. staff look after you well generally and the food is presented lovely.
anonymous - 8 Oct 2006 00:19
Nice friendly bar with a rustique modern twist. shows sport, bit of live music and a table football game! bonus, makes me want to reminiss about my student youth,,,,then i remember that was a decade ago! just an alround, friendly bar that caters for all, a solid recomendation.
anonymous - 27 Sep 2006 12:48
I visited this bar on Friday evening and it was packed! Easily the busiest bar in Twickenham but not full with either young chavs or stuck up toff, just a decent range of sensible people having a great time. The band they had on were great and really kept it rocking till late. As with most places in Twickenham, this place gets busy when theres sport or on a weekend but as theres so many other options to dine with in 2 minutes, its fairly quiet in the day and when theres nothing special on. Saying that, the staff seemed like they were enjoying it and were friendly! which makes a good bar i think. Will definalty make this a regular weekend spot.
philtaylor1979 - 24 Sep 2006 13:58
having seen all the recent comments about this pub thought i'd pop in and see what the fuss was about. No atmosphere, hardly any customers, and no reason ever to go back. That are much nicer and friendlier pubs in Twickenham where you can have a real good time. Nice try Fullers, but it ain't working.
anonymous - 21 Sep 2006 23:58
gotta say this (directed at helenof) i decided to take her advice and chose 'the bear' to drink in last night instead of the hook and thier IPA was off and the barman didn't know what a cabernet sauvignon was! i tried, it failed, went to the hook line and had a drink in there, new staff that look smart, and a nice atmosphere, and nearly every table was full so it cant be doing too bad.......
laurenmoore - 15 Sep 2006 15:53
oh come on "helenof" it's an alright bar. i think that one pint of pride that you had must be a one off cos my brother drinks it regulaly from there and he's never mentioned it being bad. and as for an out of tune band, at least they have a fun atmosphere in there. the service has always been personal and to a high standard which lets be honest, you cant get every where, and the place is looking good. yeah, its not busy all the time but i don't see any reason for it. i recomend it for a place to relax and a shot of strawberry tequila at the weekend!!!
hollygritt84 - 11 Sep 2006 22:45
Lauren Moore you need to get out more!!!!!!!!! Maybe the staff in the Bear seem a little rushed but thats because its a busy pub. People actually go there! Have you tried the other beers, like frulli! Certainly beats a rank pint of pride and some out of tune musicians. Maybe you work here and want to promote it!!!
helenof - 11 Sep 2006 02:45
Looking for somewhere to spend a nice pleasant Sunday evening for a drink. This pub/bar whatever its meant to be was soulless and not surprisingly very empty.
anonymous - 11 Sep 2006 02:38
I went in this bar ages ago and it used to seem a little boring. Now, theres something that competes with the likes of the bear (with staff that don't have a clue and a bad range of beer...not every one likes Amstel!) A different layout and nice candles makes it feel abit more intimate. I went there there other night with mates and the staff really looked after us. And just to the previous comment.... one of my friends had pride and thought it was fine! will be going back for the live music on fridays i think.
laurenmoore - 9 Sep 2006 20:45
Popped in for quick pint of Pride. Have tasted much better elsewhere. WON'T BE GOING BACK
anonymous - 3 Sep 2006 01:30
Holy shit. What are the staff doing? Went in here on RL challenge cup final day and it took my brother nearly 20 mins to get served, bar staff were plainly ignoring one section of the bar.

Get your act together boys and girls.
zagreb - 27 Aug 2006 13:55
Scratch and Jane gigged here on friday the 14th, and it was great. Robin took care of us and we took care of his patrons with encores at the end. A great night and hope this will one of our regulars. Thanks to everyone there on the night, an excellent crowd.
The reviews for this pub are excellent as stated by other users.
scratch - 15 Jul 2006 13:12
Excellent and friendly staff, beer in good nick and comfy sofa's as well. Has become one of the better and more reliable pubs in the area.
Yankee9999 - 9 Jul 2006 21:03
Large open-plan Fuller's place close to Up 'N' Under and the Bear. Excellent Pride, pretty staff, fine food but a bit impersonal. Student totty apparent. Crawl quota: one pint.
BeerHeaven06 - 6 Jul 2006 15:31
Excellent atmosphere for England game, love the Ascot ladies, Nice to see customers being looked after even though they obviously very busy
anonymous - 21 Jun 2006 02:50
Very friendly staff, quick service, quality beers and a nice safe atmosphere, can't ask for anything else
helenof - 17 Jun 2006 03:00
Wonderful pub. Atmosphere good, staff on the ball. Was told opening hours now till 12 monday to thursday, friday and saturday till 1 and sundays till 11. Superb lager and cask ales. Have enjoyed listening to the last couple of bands. The food is to eat and very well presented with such a vast choice. Reserved a table for the world cup in a prime position. Management helpful, quick service and table service was secon to none.
Would recommend highly to anyone who enjoys a relaxed atmosphere and smiles from all the staff.
willdean - 13 Jun 2006 02:25
A manager called Simon is whats needed in pubs. Good outlook and seems like a go getter.Pleasant person to talk to and has no trouble in giving a musician a go without always wanting to hear a C.D.
As most pubs [ not all ] but most pubs want a C.D, and when you ring them back to see if they've listened to it, they say, what C.D? and . . . who are you called , again. . .
I understand that they are inundated with C.Ds, but they do ask for them, so the least thay can do is listen to it or simply say that they have a stack to go through and just take a number. Sorry for the ranting . . .
anonymous - 8 Jun 2006 16:25
Fairly quiet on a Sunday evening. Good pint of ESB, friendly service. Will come again and try the food.
hotrods - 24 Apr 2006 06:42
Not too expensive, about 2.80 a pint. The decor is great. I agree with the bouncers no hat rule. Especially bloody idiots dressed in Hallowe'en costumes. They should grow up. This is a pub not a play school.
anonymous - 21 Mar 2006 13:21
Ugh. Fullers' attempt at vertical drinking. Even the frontage is brash and downmarket. Characterless. Still, I'm glad these pubs exist. All the idiots can go there and leave the nice places in peace.

I have to say though that in my infrequent visits, staff have been good. Fullers are a very smart company so even this place isn't all bad.

Return Of The Mac

anonymous - 20 Sep 2005 03:28
2.70 a pint for London Pride,so not too bad if you're drinking the house brew.Wasn't a bad pint...Sat
in the leather chairs (near the window)-in which you sink so low that you feel as if you're viewing the pub from the basement....Strange but true-I Hope!
EdgarBriggsMI5 - 18 Sep 2005 10:02
An OK pub, very much similar to a lot of other pubs in Twickenham. Can't really understand why the drinks are so expensive bearing in mind that there is so much competition around and that this pub doesn't stand out from the crowd
mike2004 - 27 Aug 2005 10:40
Went in here for the first time in a long long time. Was incredibly quiet compared to the Bear over the road and the Eel Pie. I have slagged this place off in the past, but to be honest now, there is little difference between here, the Patch and the Bear - They are virtually the same pub.

Is expensive in here - A round of 6 drinks cost 3 more in here than in the Eel Pie - Why?? Food is little expensive, but having said that, it was very nice, so credit where it's due.
TheGP - 26 Aug 2005 08:59
Sterile atmosphere and indifferent staff. Cannot seem to go in here without there being a problem of some kind - alarm going off, power cut, ovens not working, pumps breaking down, or teenage barstaff who want to charge you 4.80 for a pint of coke from the tap and not bat an eyelid.

Having said all that though, and not really liking this pub, I have to concede that they take the beer very seriously. Had a pint of Fullers Discovery in there three nights ago and it was superb. The Pride has got to be the best in town. If you just want a good pint of beer you can't go far wrong with this place. Not too many chavs on a Saturday night either.
sergeant_howie - 21 May 2005 23:29
The landlords are really nice, the food's OK, the sofas are comfy and it has a big plasma screen which is always showing bloody football. It's very bland though and has no atmosphere whatsoever so, much as I like the barstaff, I wouldn't recommend it. Only good for the late bar but you have to get in before 11pm (and I heard a rumour it's been put back to 10.30?) so you'd end up spending far more time here than would be ideal.
Cleversaz - 2 May 2005 14:28
It's not that bad actually. At least you can have a late drink in here without the risk of getting beaten up. Beer is good and service is OK
Pat - 26 Feb 2005 10:41
An awful awfully dull pub - No trouble like in the Goblin or George, but you may literally die of boredom.

anonymous - 18 Feb 2005 13:37
This pub is like someones living room but the beer was ok, and they show sport on a plasma screen.
Womble - 17 Feb 2005 15:02
I tire of the singlite thirty somethings who sit in here and longingly look over the road to the equally single gangs of thirty somethings in the Bear.....atomsphere it lacks and anyone I've ever talked to in there has had a "biological Clock" issue or large Chips on their shoulders....(my other half is a thirty something so no offence but at least he has some get up and go enough not to sit in this pub!!) Even the late licence seems to have disappeared. I got chucked out as they wanted to close early last year and to be fair haven't been in since.
Mad_Moo - 24 Jan 2005 17:17
Yet another souless, bland, dull pub. Just what the area needs!
MrEddie - 19 Jan 2005 15:10
there does seem to be something about this place that is overwhelmigly boring and bland. best to avoid it on the weekend, its ok in the week if you get a comfy sofa
anonymous - 17 Jan 2005 16:19
from reading some of the other comments I totally agree. this pub totally lacks atmosphere and feels very much like you are sitting in an ikea store. the staff are friendly but unfortunately it doesn't really make up for it! i'd much rather go next door to the Up N Under!!!
anonymous - 12 Jan 2005 21:51
A pretty characterless place, cynically targeted at the 30-something binge drinkers. The decor, prices and clientele nontheless allows them to feel superior to those who instead frequent the Sorting Room.

anonymous - 7 Jan 2005 16:52
I absolutely love this pub! The management are great, the new big screen TV's are amazing and the atmosphere is wonderful. It was a top choice for watching the England matches!

On friday night's it's perfect for getting the drinks in with a bunch of mates and on sundays it's perfect for a lovely bit of Tapas with the papers. Spent many happy hours there!

Not everyones cup of tea, but most definately a place to go. You just have to catch it at the right time.
anonymous - 7 Jan 2005 10:34
Nice seating, but as the comment below says, it feels too pre-made. Very little atmosphere in here. Dull and lifeless.
Zod - 21 Sep 2004 13:19
A new dreadful Ikea'd up pub. Has a reputation of being one of the best pubs in Twickenham when it is a soulless hell of a place. Full of fluffy rugby girls who strop around like they are the bees knees. Full of "trendy" people who wouldn't know a real pub if it punched them in the face.

Anyone who likes pubs, avoid this abomination of a drinking estblishment.
TheGP - 9 Aug 2004 15:58
These people must have the wrong pub!! I think they maybe confused with the Sorting Room...
Staff are fantastic, Sofa's a great, atmosphere is lively at weekends and relaxing during the week.
Suze and Kate - 13 Jul 2004 12:32
Very ordinary. Totally agree with comments below from James, Jim & Mighty Matt.
grellierj - 14 May 2004 11:12
Mighty Matt is spot on vis-a-vis the whole Twickenham drinking experience. And this is one to be avoided in particular.
Good for: Sunday maybe baby
thenationofjames - 27 Jan 2004 10:17
In many ways, it's like the Moon..

Costs a lot to go there, and there's no atmosphere.
Jim - 2 Dec 2003 02:12
not quite the same since paul left his food was out of this world and quick, and would always try to help.Glad big jo has left though
bob - 13 Nov 2003 16:43
hmmm... another one that really shouldn't be in the top few of the site. If it's Twickenham you're looking for go to the Prince Blutcher or the Eel Pie. Or the White Swan. Or heaven forbid even the Cabbage Patch.

Unless souless is how you like your drinking establishment experiences...
Mighty Matt - 23 Aug 2003 01:20
Very nice boozer with friendly doormen, a cracking selection of pints (Hoegaarden, Guinness regular and cold, Stella, ESB, Honeydew to name a few). A good atmosphere with ample leather sofas.
Angus - 20 Apr 2003 13:59
The Hook Line and Sinker has been the location of much carnage for me and my mate Charlotte, great atmosphere, nice sofas and potent strawberry tequilla. Only bad thing is the fact that the toilets are situated at the bottom of a very long and very steep flight of stairs, bit of a design fault specially after all that tequilla.
Kirst - 20 Nov 2002 09:27
This is a great 'lets read the sunday papers' kinda pub - big thumbs up!!
The duchess - 14 Oct 2002 22:41
