user reviews of Railway Tavern, Longfield

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Paid a visit here whilst on our way back to Southfleet on an 11 mile walk. Both bar staff and locals were very friendly and the beer was well kept. Really wanted to stay for a second pint but needed to push on to finish the walk and drive back to Essex

This pub is a great place to watch sport. It has 5 TVs, and if there are a couple of top games on, they will play both at once. They serve a good variety of beer and lager - even my favourite Italian larger Moretti - and the girl with the glasses behind the bar is fabulous (always so pleasant and remembers your favourite round!) It's a shame the décor has not been brought up to date and that food isn't available, but as afar as a friendly local pub goes, it's a pleasure to frequent and I enjoy sharing a drink there with my man a couple of times a week. Another bonus is their effort in securing bands and holding events when the time of year calls for it. The clientele are always friendly and enjoyable to chat to. A great local pub - always support your local - these guys are doing a great job!

I cant believe the arrogance of the staff they left me to pull my own pint and cook my own food. The music is overbearing and not even the staff seem to want to work under the landlord Billy who a native of Clackmanannshire lost control of the punters years ago.

The real ale in this establishment is of the very highest quality indeed and is of an exceptional standard. It is a credit to the cellarman. Whilst i wouldn't class myself as a regular in any particular public house i have been in this one on many occassions & have been made to feel welcome.

I've been to this pub a number of times and would say to people don't be put off by some of the reviews on here. From around Sept 2013 there are people so obviously bent on destroying the landlord's reputation that they have posted adverse reviews about the Railway Tavern on every other pub in the area. They are so transparent that it doesn't take much to work out what they are up to. It seems to me someone has a grudge and this is their way of trying to hit back by telling lies. I really don't like this sort of thing and trust people will make their own minds up. As far as I'm concerned this pub is ok and the beer good. It has a Casque Mark accreditation which speaks for itself.

The pub has been smartened up since new landlord took over and the beer is very good, if not excellent. The staff are always pleasant and the pub is very welcoming. Don't understand the bad reviews. My first thought was that rivals are trying to discredit or the comments are being made by someone with a grudge. Really not to be taken seriously!

oh dear, oh dear oh dear!

More worthless stupidity from an absolutely and obviously childish moron with little better to do than to set themselves out to derail someone else's business and hard work. Some on big man. It is very obvious that all these vitriolic, bile ridden, moronic meaningless posts are the work of just one simple minded idiotic freak. Reveal yourself big man. If you are so bent on the destruction of this local pub it is your civic duty to tell all the regulars and town folk who enjoy this venue exactly who you are and where you can be contacted. I'm sure you will find a good few people who would love to discuss your opposing views and who would be only too delighted to help you understand how moronic stupid childish, misinformed and idiotic you are.

p.s. Did you know that in order to be the licensee of a public house you MUST have a completely clean criminal record that is CRB (police) checked and audited by the council? NO? .. you fool!

It is true what wotsits is saying. I too heard that the landlord of the railway is a convicted (DD) drug dealer :-(
It can get a bit rough and ready in their. Especially at the weekend.
Trouble is unless you have to drive there is only the social club within walking distance. Probably why the co-op sells so much beer and wine. Everyone drinking at home in town.
bandulu - 7 Dec 2013 15:41
More lies from the 'Spoiltbastard', click his tag and see for yourself. There is only one pub he approves of? Why would that be? And why make up lies about other pubs? The Landlord at the railway is an ex convicted DD himself, would absolutely not drop people 'in it'. You cannot rely on any reviews from this individual 'Spoiltbastard', he obviously has hidden bad intentions directed at many other local pubs that are not the badger. He uses this normally useful review site as his tool of vitriol-ism. Why derail a good site with utter lies? Be a fan of the badger by all means, but don't slag off everyone else's business and tell blatant lies about them.

Has got better but still not really worth the effort to travel here unless happen to be passing. Don't even think about drinking more than one beer, the landlord proactively writes down car reg numbers of patrons and passes info to the police, but if you are not over the limit and all legal then it is not a problem
Still a bit down trodden although they do now sell real ales.
Might even have new staff as I could find no evidence of the baggy trouser spotty gangster rapper wanna be's present.

Popped in yesterday briefly after seeing the reviews on here when I googled the pub and this site comes up. So I had to try for myself. Pub was empty but it was a Monday and most pubs are early in the week so I cannot comment on other occasions having been here first time this year. Pint of lager was fine , my companion asked for Magners but they only have Bulmers in the bar. But they have Magners in the kitchen fridge, you just have to ask for it, presumably not enough room in the bar fridges. Pub has a large car park, appeared to be clean and no sign of the aforementioned smelly dogs.
Toilets smelt of cheap air freshner that was rather sickly, but one would rather that than a horrid smell of urine or feaces.
However, I had to laugh at the comments on here , so obviously written by the landlord Steven. PLEASE DISREGARD ANY AND ALL POSTS MADE BY THE IDIOT wotsit4 This is abuse in my book. There should be laws against it!!!

Pathetic comments from obvious mischief makers! Adults? you do wonder if they ever grew up. Nothing constructive here, no use to anyone. Steve

Interesting posts, Steve

It is pretty obvious that Wotsit4 is a member of staff , or in fact the Landlord.
Every time someone makes a review he is there like a shot and writing the most biased review possible . Funny person.
Well having been here , yes it is better that the weirdo family that were here about a year or so ago, but still nothing special to write about, or rush back to in fact.
Probably just about making enough to stay open. There is nothing really going for this place and never really has been. But good luck to them for trying.

At least if you are going to review your own pub, or one you have an affiliation with then perhaps have the common sense to make it not look so obvious , possibly review some other pubs too and not just this one . Caught out , Turnip brain!!
We will wait with baited breath for his pompous response!!!

Another strange review for this lovely village pub. The reason I say strange are for the reasons I list below. My advice would be to visit for yourself and make your own mind up to the validity of this very strange post. Send that bloke to 'Specsavers'

The chap says the pub is cleaner than his last visit. Now there is a worry in understatement and his powers of observation. The fact is, the pub has been completely refurbished to the outside with new signs, fresh paint to all walls, windows and frames, new fencing, new smoking canopy, new exterior lighting, fresh new hanging baskets and window boxes. Yes, I agree, it would look cleaner now, it is vastly better than it has been for years, well done to the new Landlord.

The guy then says the staff were less than good. I do not know who served him but from what I have seen, all of the staff at the Railway seem to be very nice people who cannot do enough for you. The only thing I can think is that he may have been served by Sarah who the locals affectionately call Doris, she never pulls any punches and tells it as it is, if the guy was acting as a twat I have no doubt whatsoever that Doris would have made him less than welcome, he may well have brought that upon himself.

He then says he had cloudy beer that tasted of vinegar. I would suggest that is poppycock, unless he was unfortunate enough to get the last of a barrel (which can happen) in which case, he should have told the staff who will always change any beer that is not up to standard, and would have definitely changed his had he chosen to say something rather than being a burk and walking out, fool on him.

The pub has achieved Cask Marque, the beers are always crisp and clear (unless the end of a barrel) and come up at the perfect temperature. The prices seem just a tad cheaper than all the pubs in the area at £3.10 and £3.40 and in my opinion are great value. I know this pub has recently had all new pump equipment fitted and the lines are cleaned all the time. Even the Landlord seems to drink his own bitter, now that's a good sign if ever you see it.

On Thursday nights they are doing a 'Real Ale Night', they say this is to keep the turnover up and make way for fresh ales that they get delivered on Fridays, I don't disbelieve that. On the 'Real Ale Night' you can buy Youngs or Courage for just £2.50 a pint or beers like Old Peculiar, Rev James, Adnams Broadside, Autumn Gold for Just £2.70 a pint. Give it a try is my advice.

Well worth a visit.
Wotsit4 - 29 Sep 2013 15:36
cleaner than the last time I visited but still off hand staff and awful pint of ale served.
One that will be no doubt closing again soon.

Nowhere decent to go in Longfield, you would think these Landlords would pull out all the stops and make it the best.
Either sheer laziness or incompetence.

Left my cloudy pint of vinegar and promptly left

I note the post below by the 'SBOILT.PASTARD' about this pub,so I looked up his previous comments. It seems he used 11 pubs in one day and disliked every one of them. All of his posts are malicious and designed to mislead people.

I use this pub almost every evening now, since the new owners took over, got great real ales back on and got rid of the nasty juke box and the trash that went with it.

There have been no fights in this pub since the new owners took over. The 'fighting types' simply do not use this venue anymore.

I don't think any person should be allowed to single out any other section of the community, as in,, SBOILT.PASTARD refers to 'travelers' using this venue. All I can inform any readers is as follows:

The Railway is now a family run pub with lovely real ales on (this week 'Old Sea Dog, Youngs & Courage Best), the venue attracts local villagers of all ages in a friendly disarming atmosphere. There have been no fights in this pub since the new owners took over.

PLEASE DISREGARD ANY AND ALL POSTS MADE BY THE IDIOT SBOILT.PASTARD. He reviews 11 pubs, and all bad, and all in the same day. This is abuse in my book. There should be laws against it.
Wotsit4 - 29 Jul 2013 09:41
Massive punch up with local travellers yesterday. Even the feds were hiding around the corner.

Pub got trashed , again.

Always has been and always will be a Travelling man's pub.
SBOILT.PASTARD - 15 Jul 2013 15:20
The pub has new owners, they advised me they took over in November 2012. They have repainted, cleaned the place, brought in some new furniture and made the atmosphere altogether much more friendly. This pub hasn't had real ale for over 2 years, but the new people have brought them in. Real ales on tap are Young's Bitter, Courage best and London Pride. I had a pride, it was crystal clear and perfect temperature, served up by a delightful happy smiling young lady. very nice indeed. The log fire was on, most welcome in this cold weather. I noticed they do live entertainment like blues and classic rock bands every Saturday night. This pub is definitely worth a visit now, it has obviously improved markedly under the new management.
Wotsit4 - 22 Mar 2013 11:31
Dreadfully downtrodden, shabby interior, smelly and dog-earred. A pity, because I've previously had good experiences in here, but my last was not so. The beer was putrid and the air was rancid from stale smoke drifting in from the door to the smoking area.
Awful staff with silly outfits like the rappers on TV. Often run out of beer . Disgusting real ale (Youngs bitter) . Landlord here clearly clueless on running pubs.
I shall continue to pop in every now and again out of sheer optimism, but I wouldn't recommend this pub just at the moment, especially when there are better pubs (in every respect) within a few minutes' walk.
R.Pomphrey - 19 Nov 2012 14:15
NOT SURPRISED IT HAS CLOSED DOWN AGAIN. COULD BE A NICE PUB. BEEN THERE A FEW TIMES AS MY SISTER LIVES OPPOSITE AND BEEN LAZILY SERVED BY SOME YOUNG KID WITH CAPS ON AND TROUSERS AROUND THEIR ANKLES
THEY DON'T HAVE WINE GLASSES TO PUT WINE IN, NEVER HAVE HAD RED WINE AND THE ONLY HAD ROSE ONCE IN THE LAST THREE VISITS.
ALWAYS SCRUFFY BIG DOGS PASSING WIND IN THE PUB ALTHOUGH ILLITERATELY WORDED SIGNS EXCLAIM "NO DOGS ALOUD"(SIC)
BONUS IS I GET MY CAR WASHED EVERY TIME I VISIT MY SISTER AS THEY HAVE SOME ROMANIAN GYPSIES WASHING CARS IN THE CAR PARK.

bluebellella - 5 Nov 2012 21:35
been using it on and off for 30 years, it's always struggled to be a place worth visiting which is a shame as it's the only pub for several miles with the demise of the Wheatsheaf, Colyers and Black Lion Southfleet
harryhotdog - 10 Aug 2012 10:43
This pub now has a hand car wash in the car park, which speaks for itself really.
