Only pub for miles around methinks - the nearby Terling Inn being boarded up. Ales here are served on gravity - on my visit there were two Adnams on offer. Opted for Best, first pint was very cloudy but changed without any qualms - they pilled aother from same barrel and this time acceptable - tasted OK. I'd been walking Essex Way (passes pub) and it had been lashing down all day, so good find.

Sitting outside, in the small pub garden, when the sun is shining is, well, just peace and quiet - delightful !!!

Ooops .... did I say pub ? We visited one Friday evening. Every table was laid out with cutlery and serviettes - not very encouraging for you average drinker ! So, I would venture to say that this is, in fact, a restaurant that serves beer ; not a pub that serves food.

Attracted by the idyllic setting, I visited four times last year, and once more recently. Five beers drunk, four of which I rated poor to undrinkable. All this, and yet they won a CAMRA good beer award ? Amazing !!. Well, at least I persisted.

One of the best pub meals I've had. Huge portions, proper pub food style and less of the gastropub nonsense that you get too much of nowadays.

Lovely pub, not massive but nice decor, olde worlde style. Two real ales of which I had a Dark Star Art of Darkness which was cracking. Staff were nice and overall there was a really good atmosphere. Highly recommended.

Although we live a few miles away we regard the Square and Compasses at Fuller Street (which is near Fairstead) as our local. If we could live there we would. Great beer, they now have their own, superb food and great atmosphere. Victor and Susan are also fantastic hosts.

Please don't visit the S&C in case you fill it up and there isn't room for us!

Shalford ale from the the barrel was pretty good, although there was no other choice of ale when I visited.

Food is unpretentious, reasonably priced and well cooked. Service was brilliant and the place seemed to be run by a chap and a lady I took to be the owners who made the visit a pleasure.

The main bar is really just a restaurant which seems to get very busy so you need to book. The smaller bar is more for drinkers and was full of locals when I visited. I will be returning, but on first impressions I would recommend this place highly.

Took my parents to this pub after hearing it had re-opened after 2 years. Heard good reports so gave it a go. What a surprise - great food, warm and and friendly plus 4 real ales from a local micro - Shalfords I seem to recall? Served from gravity. Aimed at diners there is a small bar where drinks are served and local people gather - it was starting to get crowed when we left. Would definately recommend this pub for a meal and good beer.

This pub has recently been taken over and completely refurbished, and done really nicely. It is an olde worldy place with beams aplenty. The real ale (three when I was last there)was good, and served straight from the barrel. We had lunch which was brilliant, we only wanted sandwiches but there was enough bread and meat in them to keep you going for days. The menu looks appetizing and we look forward to having a main meal there next time, although I have heard it is very busy in the evenings. (By the way the kitchen is closed on Mondays). The landlord is very friendly and helpful. He is also very knowledgeable on wines, just get him talking about them and you will learn a lot. Looking forward to next visit.

We was taken here for a late lunch only a few weeks ago and the food was to die for, it was proper home cooked food. The owners and bar staff were fantstic and very friendly. Could not knock this place at all. We heard that it has recently been taken over and done up. Whatever they have done is a bonus as we would definitely go back......
